Subject: Accidentally deleted files

RawArt ( ) posted Sun, 03 August 2003 at 2:28 PM · edited Sat, 09 November 2024 at 1:39 AM

In an effort to clean my hardrive, I was moving stuff from one directory HD to another, and accidentally deleted all my original photoshop layered character files. I still have all my final flattened jpeg versions, but the originals I have lost. Does anyone know of a way i can restore them? (they are not in the recycle bin..they are fully deleted) I am running windows 2000pro. Anyone?

Did you try "System Restore"? That is if 2000 pro has it. I lost my whole characters library, did a search thru both my hard drives, checked the trash, everything I could think of.......and it couldn't be found. So I thought what did I have to lose, did a system restore, and it showed up again....Go figure? genny

Search on the net for file restore/HD rescue utilities. I have Ontrack HD recovery which will get back 95% of data from a well and truly trashed HD. Costs about $150 IIRC, but it's better than losing all your work.

You might want to do a search for a program called "R-Studio" that costs $ 40 US. They make a version that handles NTFS and works great. I have used it both at home and at work for data recovery, with a 99% recovery rate. I own several different data recovery tools, including OnTrak, and this is my utility of choice due to the greater success I have had with it. (Not only will it recover a stand-alone drive, but also a RAID 5 set, with no problems). Good luck to you. Have had a couple drives take a total dump on me, so know how frusterating it can be. Very easy to do.You may already have the softwear needed....something along the line of Norton Systemworks. If not go to their Web site and DL the fully working 30 day demo. SWAMP

The most important thing to do right now is to stop using the drive that has the 'deleted' files on it. Any changes you make to that drive (even, for example, using a web browser which stores its cache on that drive) stand a fair chance of overwriting some of the data you want to recover. Once you have the machine switched off (or the drive isolated), take your pick of the Windows 2000 undelete utilities out there. I've seen File Scavenger used by a colleague at work to good effect. Whichever one you use, you have to be careful how you go about undeleting. If the drive was your operating system drive (most likely C: for Win2K) you'll need to put the drive into another machine as a non-boot drive to do the recovery. Booting from the drive with the deleted files is just asking for Windows to overwrite part of the files you want to recover. Just for emphasis: STOP USING THE DRIVE WITH THE DELETED FILES ON IT. Kev.

Hi Folks Thanx for the advice I could not find the demo version of Norton system works anywhere on their site, but I did download and try the demo of file scavenger...and it only seemed to find jpeg files..no psd files. So that one was a no-go as well. I am bracing myself to accept that I really do not need those old files...and if I made something once, I can always do it again ....but it just sux! Thankfully these are products already made and in the marketplace...so I "should" not have to go back and refer to the original files...but I am a pack-rat, and do not like to throw anything away LOL I will keep seeing if there is anything I can do...but will try not to stress out about it :) Thanx for all the advice Rawn

Restorer2000 has a demo so you can see what it will undelete/rescue. if you decide to buy it it's pretty cheap $30 for NTSF or $50 for the pro full version. try the demo, couldn't hurt to read the HD and see what it finds.

the only way I know is to run the recovery utility from OnTrack. The cheapest version they have should be sufficient to find the files and recover them. Easy Recovery Lite should do the job.
