Subject: Ok so why does firefly hang?

I'm been trying to figure this out for a while now. Just set up a scene that was large but not too intensive. City set by 3dmodelz, 2 vickies, 3 mikes. Go to render in p4 renderer and it renders fine, just no good render options like ray shadows. Go to render in Firefly and it hangs on "Adding Objects". Bar never moves. Left it running all night and nothing. I can move the little box around and max and min the poser window but no render. Also I have to 3 finger salute to shut poser down. So has anyone figured out what things are making Firefly go wheels up? I've had this happen in smaller scenes with only 2 vickies. I think its memory related since this happens more with figures I have the full MT set on than on figures that I have carved down to necessary MTs. (I'm not using v3 BTW) System: Home built asus v733 board with 2.4gig AMD Atahlon. 1.5 gigs DDR ram. TI 5200 video card. Lots of HD space for swap(close to 20 gigs.) I'm wondering if it has anything to do with rendering an enclosed environment. I'm using 3dmodelz worldz sphere for the panorama. Other renders that didn't work in firefly were also in enclosed structures that were figures like Beyond Bent's lab. But it dies at the add object stage not at rendering shadows. Very frustrating since its pretty unreliable.

I had that happen a few times too. win2k, sp4, 2.1amd, 1g ram. homebuilt asus a7m266. So, all I can say is either it doesn't like asus, or its yet another bug that CL has not gotten to yet. Oh, and I'm on SR2.1 because I dont run at the screen resolution that SR3 is set for.

If this is the same problem I experience under render options, my problem is selecting the boxes under rendering options, such as cast shadows, remove backface polygons, sometimes when I try to select all the boxes gray out, my solution is just press okay open it back up then try to select again, usually this does the trick for me. This seems to be a bug in poser 5

I have had this problem as well.. what works for me is to play with the bucket size. It is 32 by default I believe, and I have not had a single FireFly renderer problem since varying the bucket size to somewhere between 20 and say 30 .. I guess each machine is different. HTH /gz

fret, I'll try that. Good idea.

I have noticed that P5 hangs with the textures on certain light sets. Mine hangs a lot with the essence of innocence lightset with DAZ. Change lightsets and it doesn't hang.

are these lightsets that are/were created in p4? I have had a lot of problems with p4-originated lightsets that have targetted spotlights and/or lights that are off (black lights). Also, make sure that your lightsets (if they are from p4) use raytraced shadows HTH /gz

I've noticed it happening if I render too many times, regardless of quality settings, firefly or P4, it will hang eventually. The number of renders I get seems dependent of scene size, but even a simple scene will hang after a certain number of renders.

I've taken to periodically saving and shutting down Poser - seems to help, if I remember.

I had a hang today and the three finger salute just after changing light sets and after only two renders with previous light sets. So, to me, this is a light set issue.

I have an ASUS 7V333 and have only had the hang problem after many renders or when I use. I have the most certain light sets. When I first used P5 I had problems with a certain background and prop(one of the Transpond ones) but since I started updating my bios I really seem to have solved my problem for the most part. I still turn off P5 after several renders you can tell when it's getting tired, and I save all the time just in case. Marge

I've gotten these hangs in a couple of different scenarios: 1) hair density too high (to many props, to dense props in a scene). Can be overcome by changing bucket size but doesn't work everytime. 2) Using raytraced spotlights. If I change spotlights to Universals, it works, but I've gotten hangs with simple scenes with only a couple of spotlights using raytracing.
