Hi all, the last days I reworked an older scene I modelled some time ago and I'm curious what you think of it. This image was a hell to render because of all the shiny surfaces. Only small postwork (color correction, glow, resizing) was done with PSP. The walls are modelled with lattices. The scene files contains 104 objects with a total of 25.174.364 polygons and was rendered at 1125*843. Rendering took above 30 hours. This is only the beginning of that project, some Poser models will hopefully be involved later too. :-) Take care, Jimi

Great one, Jimi! I really love the shininess of the environment. My only pick would be about the mat on the doors, I think it's not so clearly visible, but maybe it's a matter of downsizing/compression. I'd like a lot to see it in full res.

Thank you. :) I re-rendered the doors and apllied a not so shiny mat on them. Should the doors loke more like metal or should they also be shiny? J.

Nice modeling. You don't hear this too often though ... I think it's too bright.

derjimi ( ) posted Wed, 06 August 2003 at 1:40 PM

Yeah, the light on the ceiling is something I am not happy with too. Probably I will lower the contrast. Thanks! :-) J.

I don't think it's too bright at all, if the surfaces were really that reflective, then the light would bounce around for a very long time, the room would definitely be very bright with that long tube light. btw how did you make that? I think maybe a little less reflective (even though it looks so cool) Awesome image though, keep up the great work.

The tube light is just a stretched box with a pure withe material applied. 100% ambience and diffusion does the trick. Postworked some glow on it, but I will redo that definately. The light comes from 32 light spheres, upper ones with intensity of 36, lower ones with intensity 3 to light the floor. See attached picture. J.

Btw, that metal grate on the floor looks excellent. Completely realistic.

you're like...the master of insane render times... I love the environment, looks so clean.

I really look forward to where this goes.

Pass no temptation lightly by, for one never knows when it may pass again!

Great environment. The reflection on the ceiling is a bit too strong to my taste though.

reminds me of a famous animation short. I can't remember the name, but it's the one with the falling domino stones and chrome spheres.

Jimi, looks great--love the light, love the reflections, love it all. Like Stefano, I'd like to see a higher res pic too! Can't wait to see the final image. (Rayraz, yes it was Fiat Lux)

Wow very cool!

shadowdragonlord ( ) posted Wed, 06 August 2003 at 7:36 PM

I think it's AWESOME! The materials are great, lighting is excellent. I can't wait to see where you go with this one... Reminds me of Perfect Dark, a bit, only much higher res and cooler!

TheBryster ( ) posted Wed, 06 August 2003 at 9:09 PM

Great work, but a bit too shiny? You're forgetting dust and grotty atmosphere perhaps?

Yeah Jimi, I think it's awesome too, but I'd like to see a higher res version.

derjimi ( ) posted Thu, 07 August 2003 at 5:09 AM

There will be a higher resolution. As said in the first posting it is rendered at 1125*843. :-))

Doublecrash ( ) posted Thu, 07 August 2003 at 6:52 AM

Thans for the additional screenshots, Jimi. I'm a big fan of Bryce light and seeing how other works is always useful. Concerning your question in post #3, personally I'd go with a more metallic look, thus a bit less shiny. But it's a matter of personal tastes and, of course, you're the artist here. My doubts were caused only by the fact that I thought you were losing some doors' detail. S.

looks fantastic.....the shiny ceiling shows a false sense of height..which in a low celing room is a wonderful thing....(specially in houses and small rooms) I love this pic, but yes, i would have to agree with slightly, yes slightly lol, less reflection on the ceiling...it now almost looks like the light beam is floating in an empty space....sonething a little less reflective might help plant it firmly in place for you...but then again, those are just my thoughts if i had been able to do something as great as that...grins oooo on taking a fourth look, lol, perhaps making some sort of trim to line the spot between the ceiling and walls to help define it's actual limits, then the reflectivity may look even better...grins (that thought occurred as i looked at the far wall above the door)
