Subject: Look what I just pulled off!

This uses a test pattern, not the final texture, so don't worry that this armour is going to say 'TEST' all over it. Look closely at the edges in the image where you see the surface of the armour meet the background. Notice how it's not smooth. This was done *entirely* in Poser 4.03 with NO postwork. When I get this sucker finished you people are gonna love it, I think!

Lest you think I'm insane and using a ridiculously high-poly mesh to do that...

_dodger ( ) posted Tue, 12 August 2003 at 7:11 PM

BTW, my colo is screwing up so my site and email are down atthe moment, and so is xfx3d.com. In case anyone was wondering.

_dodger ( ) posted Tue, 12 August 2003 at 7:12 PM

Oh, yeah, my UVMapping skills have by necessaity improved B^) B^P

Spit ( ) posted Tue, 12 August 2003 at 7:32 PM

I actually like the texture. LOL Nice work though. How'd you do that?

_dodger ( ) posted Tue, 12 August 2003 at 7:35 PM

I'll tell you all after it's released and out for a bit, how's that? Hey, gotta keep the occassional hand held close to my shirt B^)

_dodger ( ) posted Tue, 12 August 2003 at 7:39 PM

Answer #2: Oh sure, I tell you and you tell someone else and before we know it EVERYTHING in the Poser world is bumpy B^) Answer #3: Trompe 'oeil.

Xena ( ) posted Tue, 12 August 2003 at 7:46 PM

The pipe trim could use a few extra poly's, it's a bit pointy looking in places. And please don't take that as a slight against your modelling skills, just offering up some constructive crit. Feel free to just cyber slap me ;)

_dodger ( ) posted Tue, 12 August 2003 at 8:23 PM

cyber slap Just kidding, but it's not pipe trim, it's just not done yet, don't worry, it will look fine when it is textured correctly and bumpmapped (I didn't save any of those test renders or I'd prove it) B^)

_dodger ( ) posted Tue, 12 August 2003 at 8:30 PM

Oh, hey, by the way now I think about it, it does look more that way in this pic, which could be the angle but I think is mostly the effect of the faux-textured-surface (meaning texture in the real sense, not paint job in the 3D sense) casting shadows on it (it looks smoother with the effect turned off). The bumpmap for it takes care of this (but I have to tweak that bumpmap a bit still) Yeah, except for a few small parts (the shoes and helmet) we're WAY past the modelling stage now. So while constructive criticism is welcome, dont' expect me to act on it if it involves going back and modelling something and rebuilding the morph targets and so on (thre are some hidden morph channels that are a requirement of the mesh design to work at all. On botht he Domaru and Waidate there are places where a co-planared edge hits the border between two groups/body parts. As pose is inclined to either weld those or not weld anything on that join, I had to do a weird trick where I move the vertices well out of the way, create the figure, and then hidden-morph the edges.vertices in question back to where they belong.

Xena ( ) posted Tue, 12 August 2003 at 8:45 PM

So while constructive criticism is welcome, dont' expect me to act on it if it involves going back and modelling something Totally understand that :) Unless you are talking to another modeller it's hard to get people to understand how time consuming it is to go backwards once you've moved past the modelling stage. Looking forward to seeing your finished product :)

_dodger ( ) posted Tue, 12 August 2003 at 9:28 PM

Me too B^) wipes sweat from forehead I'm past the worst of theUVMapping, and that's the part I hate hate hate most. Heck, I was gonna give up part of profits to get out of it, but no one got back to me in decent time (since this is on a tight deadline now).

Xena ( ) posted Tue, 12 August 2003 at 10:20 PM

I don't mind mapping, it's fiddling the joint parameters I really hate. But then again, if I'd just make regular fitting stuff I wouldn't have that problem LOL

Tintifax ( ) posted Wed, 13 August 2003 at 12:44 AM

Hi dodger, This really looks great. Will we get other parts (for legs and arms too)? What modeler do you use? Really looking forward to see the finished product.

_dodger ( ) posted Wed, 13 August 2003 at 5:12 AM

Xena: Hmm, p'raps we should get together on something. JPs are a cinch to me now. Tintifax: There's well more than the Domaru -- that's just all I have at all textured so far. I've a few more texture images to put up in progress, and then I'll show you the modelled parts done so far. I model in Max.

This pic shows a base one-colour lacing texture for the Domaru lamellar (still no texturing on the other bits yet)

Here's the modelled parts so far with Mike 3 in them, but only textures on the trouser legs.

Looks great! :-D

Looks good

noggin ( ) posted Wed, 13 August 2003 at 1:14 PM

Hey Dodger_ lovely effect and texture(s) Trompe L'oeil is my guess! Studying that poly mesh it looks to me like you've got a subtely offset second copy and I guess you've used one for the up-bump and one for the down?? Very artful dodger (grins_couldn't resist) Don't I just agree about that late modelling thing_ specially if you do all the original stuff with nurbs_ there comes a time when you've just gotta drop the modelling and get on to the next stages! Good luck with this_ looking forward to seeing the finished set! Nigel

_dodger ( ) posted Wed, 13 August 2003 at 3:25 PM

Noggin, very close and partly right on the texture. Hmm, are you familiar with Oingo Boingo? If other are we might expect this outfit and some of your stuff to be used together a lot B^) I don't work in NURBS, but I make it a rule that unles something is horrific, once the first morphs are done, forget about remodelling B^)

noggin ( ) posted Wed, 13 August 2003 at 3:45 PM

HaH!! you tantalising teasing texture tempter you! Oingo Boingo is lost on me! Could you use this effect on chain mail too_ to get that over-locked effect_ maybe this is also what you were hinting at some time back to get irridescence on my python? Anyway good on you for pushing the boundaries, dodger! best wishes Nigel

_dodger ( ) posted Wed, 13 August 2003 at 4:14 PM

Could you use this effect on chain mail too_ to get that over-locked effect_ maybe this is also what you were hinting at some time back to get irridescence on my python? Yup yup. Reptiles and Samurai by Oingo Boingo Reptiles and Samurai Inhabit my head Invading my dreams Sleeping in my bed They battle but they never die They hear what I hear Watching thru my eyes They don`t like what they see Reptiles and Samurai Are under my skin They hide in my mind They speak with my tongue They run amuck in my terrain They are not friends But they are forced reluctantly To share my brain Reptiles have silly grins Dark eyes--shiny teeth--some have fins Samurai they smile never Serious--pretty swords--very clever Sometimes I watch you from this place way in the sky Your face is young and shiny transformed right before my eyes Without warning, without reason To Samurai and lizards reptiles and Samurai Samurai and lizards Reptiles and Samurai Reptiles and Samurai Inhabit my head Invading my dreams Sleeping in my bed They battle but they never die Reptiles have pretty scales They run real fast--they like to bite--some have tails Samurai like their water hot--very brave They eat raw fish--they fight alot

Oooh I like that colouring. Well done :)

noggin ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 12:22 AM

Ha excellent Dodger!!! Thanks for the poem_great stuff! That texture and tecnique is amazing_ this latest the best_ you've really caught the effect.

and now, adding colour...

_dodger ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 4:53 AM

Waidate now.

_dodger ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 8:20 AM

file_71391.jpg

Starting on the osode. This needs fixing as somehow I made the UVMap sideways, but at this angle you can't see the messed-up part, so I'll post this anyway (and it looks cool that you can see the false displacement effect really well on the osode)

DraX ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 10:38 AM

Grrrr.... I hate you dodger.... now I'm going to have to buy this JUST to figure out how you did that texture technique :) Remind me again, you said that's Poser 4.03, right?

_dodger ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 3:08 PM

Yuppers. 4.03. I don't have any Poser more complex than that. Hmm, haven't the barbarians copied the design for Lamellar from the Samurai in the past? L History repeats itself in the Poser world? J/K B^)

_dodger ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 4:32 PM

Update - Osode fixed

May as well throw the trouser legs and suneate into this.

sithgoblin ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 8:11 PM

That is looking excellent!!

_dodger ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 11:24 PM

And another bit

_dodger ( ) posted Fri, 15 August 2003 at 12:49 AM

Now that I have those bits textured, I need to go model some more B^) Parts remining: Sendan no ita Kyubi no ita Tabi/tsuranuki Hoshikabuto Shigeto Soya And a few things left to texture are the katana, wakizashi, gunsen, and scabbards.

ronstuff ( ) posted Sat, 16 August 2003 at 7:27 PM

Dodger - this is very impressive work - I can hardly wait for the full pack!
