I'm surprised there's very few WIPs for the challenge. I say let's get it on!

It turns out Stefanos idea for the challenge is a REAL challenge! Not only do you have to think of treelab, you gotta learn skylab, and terrain fractals as well. Today I spent some time on the skylab and treelab, boy I learned a lot! Not much luck, just one tree =( . So here it is so far, semi-transparent leaves. Not much of a WIP really, Sigh!

I was trying to get the sun in the right spot and right amount of transparency on the leaves. Hope you guys are making better progress.

Unfortunately this is yet another project that I won't be able to take part in. I've been working on getting my grass products up and running, add that to college starting september 1'st, + a deadline of august 28th for an article I am doing for renderosity magazine... My plate is too full to add another project. And it's such a shame because I really wanted to do this one.

here's one i did a while back, trying the whole light through the trees idea...the trees were done in the tree lab, and the sky adjusted in the sky lab as well as positioning the sun by hand.....was just playing around, so not really an entry, but *grins* am in th emood to upload tonight...LOL

JC_01 ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 1:28 AM

lol i do wanna add that there was no AA on this so is a bit choppy in places....the AA version blended just a lil too much...

I think your tree looks great Alvin! I recently did a scene with a lighthouse and it got good ratings, but something about it bugged me. Leave it to my cousin(a non-artist) to state the obvious,"your trees are too perfect, trees on a bluff above the sea should be ragged and windblown". She was right! I tried every trick I knew, but I couldn't get the treelab to produce a gnarly coast tree with a lot of branches missing on one side. I'm not saying it can't be done(always dangerous when talking about Bryce!)but I have not discovered the secret.

I decided to model some tree trunks in Wings3D and then I added treelab trees with "invisible" trunks for the foilage. I think they would look alright for background trees.Just another technique to consider perhaps. Bryce4 artists could substitute terrains or lattices for leaf clusters.

I still haven't yet begun to work on the challenge pic, mostly because of the tremendous heatwave that hit Milan and the most part of Europe in the past weeks (yesterday we touched 49 C -- that's about 118 F, with over 80% humidity) that really makes impossible to work for us un-airconditioned people :|, specially during the daylight hours, thus forcing me to do my real job in the night (the time I usually spend Brycing). Not to mention the continuous overheat alarm of my motherboard goin off. I hope to be able to post something soon. So far I saw really good works. Heated, Stefano :)

BTW, danamo: there's a wonderful example on how to use terrains for leaves in Susan Kitchen's RWB4.

Alvinylaya; Very nice WIP shot. I'm still working on artwork for Orbital Thread. I haven't started workin on the challenge yet. I do have a nice idea, but work goes first. And then I've got college starting at september 1st too.

I spent a lot of time yesterday in the tree lab, nothing ready to show as a wip yet. I'm having lots of trouble with the colors of things. Just don't like em, been spending time in DTE too. Nothing coming out right just yet.

catlin_mc ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 7:35 AM

I've only got a basic terrain sorted out as yet and a little house I built. I'll post a wip soon so you can see my house I really like the windows 'cos they use some celtic knot work for the metal frames. Anyway later.............8) Catlin

I would post a WIP, but AAAAAAAaaaaaaaarrrrrgggggghhhhh, my first crash since I loaded the patch :-(. br5 file is corrupt, was almost completed saving, so there's two of the axifff.tmp files lurking on my hard drive, anyone know if I can recover from the files? (typically I hadn't got as far as a save as, damn damn damn , that's about 8 hours work down the pan because I was stupid :-( )

This IS really a challenge. *l* I've had to dive into the DTE and the skylab too. :) Not sure about this fir, - I'm getting to like the overall shape of it, - the foliage might need some more work, though :)

This was an accidental tree I did while working on the challenge. I'd always wondered if the treelab could make "Mutant" trees. Best; Dan

Ang25 ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 11:17 AM

Looks good Dan! at least it isn't the female counterpart to Muddygrubs tree :P :-D

danamo ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 3:17 PM

LOL @ Ang, it looks like it might be a distant cousin though!

Rayraz ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 3:46 PM

Cool tree Dan. Don't forget to post the settings. I think I can make something nice out of it.

Oh I love danW and britt's tree. Britt's is very soft, while DanW's is down right scary.

catlin_mc ( ) posted Fri, 15 August 2003 at 5:59 AM

Amazing looking tree Dan, I'd like the settings too please. It sort of reminds me of spiders, how horrible that would be....................A SPIDER TREE.....OH NO! 8) Catlin

Well, here's a teaser, as you can see the render dropped out part way through....

Still lots of work to do!!!

Anyway, I was pondering posting the 3ds files for the water plants (foreground left)and what started as a hosta but didn't turn out quite right (on the other bank of the stream) as a freebie pack. Anyone intersted?

This is where I've got so far, well I've actually gone further but this is the basics. I made a really nice sky last night that is reminicent of the Scotish highlands, in the mountains, so I put that in last night. Now I'm going to play with some trees and see how far I can go before Bryce crashes. 8) Later. Catlin

Rayraz ( ) posted Fri, 15 August 2003 at 7:04 AM

Sorry, this is so late but here's the values for the Mutant tree shown above. I've also posted the tree .BTO+.MATs at the link . I was surprised this .BTO was only 29k, less then the 2 exported MATS. I sure am seeing a great bunch of Bryce trees! Thanks for the comments; Dan
