Subject: ACCCKKKKK! How does one make a texture map for a .dxf file?!

JettBoy ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 12:38 PM · edited Tue, 24 December 2024 at 10:36 PM

The only 3D modelling app (other than Bryce and Poser) that I have access to is trueSpace 3, and the only common file format I can save my modelled objects as, for use in Poser, is dxf. The software (UV Mapper) I use for making maps for Poser figures and for obj/3DS freebies doesn't seem to like this file type, so consequentially I'm stuck with these beautiful models that I can't map...and a solid color just ain't gonna work. Loading my dxf into Poser and re-saving as an obj file doesn't seem to work either. JettBoy very frustrated...

Any suggestions?? Generate some good karma and help a brother out!

Import the DXF file into Poser and then export it from Poser as an OBJ file. Then you can UV Map and continue using the OBJ file format to and from UV Mapper and Poser.

DUH!! I just noticed that you said that procedure didn't work ... hmmm, in that case I am at a loss. Where did you download your models, perhaps I can give them a try?

PhilC ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 1:04 PM

I think you'll find that what Deecey suggests will actually work. When you load the Poser exported OBJ into UVMapper you will probably get a message saying that no UV data is present. This is because the original DXF file did not have any, (DXF files never do). All you need to do is use UVMapper to add that data.

Once the model is in UVMapper go to Edit/New UV Map/Planar/Z . This may not be the best mapping but it will give you a start and put you on the right path.

I agree with DC and Phil, I took a .DXF cube, loaded in Poser 5 Mac and Poser 4PP PC (still waiting on the side-grade!) exported as .OBJ and was able to load it fine into UVM and UVMPro. I do this all the time to convert .3DS to .OBJ. But it will load in Bryce? If that's the case try selecting the object, hit the little "E" button next to it and in the Edit Mesh dialog type Control+D. Then select .OBJ export from the popup. I'd be amazed if that didn't load into UVM. Only problem with this way is that if you have square polygons Bryce will triangulate them. HTH; Dan

Phil, Any simple way of detriangulating a DXF based mesh?

PhilC ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 3:26 PM

Yes, convert to an OBJ in Poser and use Anthony Appleyard's Detriang program. Its on the last page of the Poser freestuff utilities.

I tried detriang and nothing useful happened. Echt. Well I'll give it another poke. Thanks Phil :)

pdxjims ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 3:37 PM

Yikes! I've been trying to figure out how to detriagulate stuff for weeks. It always pays to read the threads! Thanks Lyrra for asking, and thanks Phil, for the answer!

Anthony Appleyard ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 4:13 PM

Detriang only works if the (two triangles that make up a rectangle) are adjacent in file listing order (that was to save greatly on run time) and in the same group and in the same material.

Lyrra ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 4:34 PM

hmm ... so if I have a model that started as a DXF, Poser converted to OBJ ... used UVmapper to assign to 1 material and group.... but detriang won't work then the winding order is quirky? solutions?

umblefugly ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 4:43 PM

Ahh...:) Cinema4D has a detriangulate tool:)Except you need to select the section you need detriangulated.

umblefugly ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 4:44 PM

Have you tried reversing the winding order Lyrra?

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 10:34 PM

As an alternative, JettBoy, you might consider saving your models in trueSpace's native .cob format, then converting the file to .obj format with a freeware utility like LithUnwrap (or the commercial version, Ultimate Unwrap3D).

kawecki ( ) posted Fri, 15 August 2003 at 3:15 AM

Poser import and convert very baddly dxf meshes, they don't look good, so I've done a little utility that converts dxf to obj correctly, then I can map it with UVMapper for the texture and import the obj into Poser

Stupidity also evolves!

Cool...and is this little useful app some place for download? Is it free or commercial? Inquiring mind wants to know :-)

kawecki ( ) posted Fri, 15 August 2003 at 3:49 AM

Attached Link: http://www.renderosity.com/homepage.ez?Who=kawecki

It is a DOS program, until now I haven't done a Windows version, too lazy..., you can run it from the DOS prompt. It doesn't convert any kind of dxf, it only deals with 3DFACE entities, but in many meshes it works and when work it do it fine. Go to my homepage and download the "DXF to OBJ Converter"

Stupidity also evolves!

Bryde ( ) posted Fri, 15 August 2003 at 6:39 AM

Oh great. I'm going to try it out when I'm home. Thanks!

Anthony Appleyard ( ) posted Fri, 15 August 2003 at 9:31 AM

My MAKEOBJ can read .DXF and output .OBJ .
