THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Bryce Blackouts

Hi, Is anyone experiencing blackouts of the viewing window after deleting an item. The top menu band (MacOS) remains, but when hit, the program freezes. Upon startup and opening Bryce4, the problem is still there. It appears that after removing the Bryce preference file, the problem goes away. While fixable, it happens way too often. Is it just me? manowar

Could be a memory problem. Try allocating more memory to Bryce. If that doesn't work, run Disk FirstAid. Also, try conflict catcher if you have it (although I don't know of any Bryce conflicts with extensions). Sarah

I've noticed after doing this enough times that it occurs typically upon trying to export objects in the "non-traditional" manner of hitting command D on after the "e" menu comes up (MacOS). Maybe this is a result of of not having this unannounced export option totally baked. In any case, thank you for the assist. manowar

Again, I think it could be memory. I used to have all sorts of instability troubles with Bryce until I gave up and just allocated a lot of memory (130 MB).

I get a similar problem when exporting I get general protection faults.

You're right - bryce is a program that chews a he|| of a lot of memory. I've allocated something like 230mb... and still it doesn't perform like i'd wish..... Maybe this will be fixed for the next version I've had the black screen when quitting - but leave it for 5/6 minutes and it'll finally close down - ohh and im on mac os too!

I'm starting to concur that it's memory related. This is despite the fact that I have some 450 megs of RAM allotted to this program. Strangely enough, when e/d exporting objects from Bryce, the smaller items go through well enough, but anything bigger, such as a poser figure zaps the export process. It may not only be a question of polygon number, but also groups. At one time, I was anticipating using Bryce as a sort of translator, where Poser's colored polys might be exported out of Bryce as .lwo/.lws (Lightwave) and then brought into electricimage, but the terraformer couldn't handle the export. Thanks for the assists. manowar

As an addendum to my last post: I don't think Bryce is a memory hog more than any other 3d program, but I do think that the export process is half-baked. The e/d export was never officially documented in the manual or, if I recall correclty, neither in the "readme" and was passed around by word of mouth as an "Easter egg". It was probably Kai's last laugh on Metacreations, all those black frozen screens 7/24:) manowar
