Hard to see the patterns there, but some obvious results are that the lower the ram the longer the render time. Soooo, it... Looks like win2k is the faster OS Looks like 1g ram is the faster ram amount Looks like AMD is the faster chip Does that seem fair?

Jim Burton ( ) posted Sat, 30 August 2003 at 10:19 PM

I agree with all but the last, average of 18 AMDs was 326 seconds, average of 19 Pentium 4s (throwing out the Notebooks and Xeons) was 256 seconds, 22% faster. With the Notebooks and Xeons in there it is a 260 second average, BTW, if I have the math right. It is still (probably) slightly cheaper to build a AMD computer, I expect, but I wouldn't say thay have an advantage in Poser 5 like they did in Poser 4.

1Freon1 ( ) posted Sat, 30 August 2003 at 11:37 PM

You cant average with so many different speeds. 7 of the P4s are 2.53Ghz and higher. Only one AMD system is 2.5Ghz, and that is overclocked (there are no Athlon 2.5Ghz CPUs yet, the highest is the 3200+ @2.2Ghz). Something like this is a little more valid: AMD 2800+ (2.083Ghz) 1 Gb RAM Win 2000 Pro 192 seconds AMD 2.1Ghz 1 Gb RAM Win 2K 193 seconds P4 2.8Ghz 1 Gb RAM Win 2K 194 seconds. From those results, it looks like the AMD CPU is a good bit better than the P4 in Poser. It's 700-800Mhz slower yet still on top.

1Freon1 ( ) posted Sat, 30 August 2003 at 11:43 PM

It is also obvious from the results most people here have systems that are running a lot slower than they should be. So a true comparison is damn near impossible. What would be great is if someone with multiple systems could do a comparison in a more controlled environment.

nakamuram ( ) posted Sun, 31 August 2003 at 4:11 PM

I don't think the results are conclusive, because not everyone was on the "same sheet of music." There were two versions of the Bench Mark -- one with P5 Hair and one with Trans-mapped hair. Most people have not stated which one they ran. Also, some people seemed to be uncertain about how to run the test. Different procedures in testing will definitely yield different results.

Jim just wondering what you rendered? I have a P4 Intel 1.8gig 1gig ram 64mb video card and my render times varies from render to render. My average time is around 200sec with V3, some clothing and hair, the hair for some reason seems the slowest to render. Items used V3, Cyclorama: Woodland Coast Backgrounds,Complex Global Lighting Pak 1 (Outdoor globals), SD Retro Outfit and , Razzle Dazzle Hair. With FireFly Production Default settings this took 212sec to render with no post work. There is some post work done to this rendering.

Someone said they tried the same scene with transmapped hair, but I didnt see any test file with transmapped hair.

robz ( ) posted Mon, 01 September 2003 at 3:08 AM

that render would look real if it wasnt for the sunglasses and hair (un-natural looking) im on a P2 333mhz with 128mb ram and windows 98 SE hmm i guess thats why my renders take up to an hour ? soon getting an amd 2600xp + and ... 512 ram , and , a 30gb hard drive

cubed ( ) posted Mon, 01 September 2003 at 11:36 AM

maybe all the overclockers should be elliminated from the list, i think there would be a more stable pov on standard cpu settings for p4's just my 2 cents. but great job none the less. Mr. Burton (:

lucstef ( ) posted Tue, 02 September 2003 at 3:16 AM

Jim, I think the AMD 2600+ is mine, as there aren't others... Just to clarify, I have 1 Gig RAM and I use Win2k SP4, and I've stated that in my posts there :-) Luca

Jim Burton ( ) posted Tue, 02 September 2003 at 4:00 PM

Thanks cubed!- I "lost" some of the OSs and stuff when I transposed the results, anything that wasn't in one message was lost, some other stuff was probably lost from my sheer stupidity. I only did the one Poser 5 test, the Posette has a P5 Mohawk. There was also the old, original P4 test, the one in my Free Stuff, which some ran in Poser 5, but neither test uses trans-mapped hair. nyguy- my P4 2.8 Ghz did 209 seconds originally, got it down to 194 by optimizing the memory speed in the BIOS, it was back up to 221 seconds yesterday after I installed Asus Probe (wipped that sucker right back off!). Yeah, the times do jump around a bit, first is often the best one, I used first-run on all of my results. The only vaid results are really first-run with NO changes in Poser 5. However, iyt is perfectly valid to make changes external to Poser to try and get better results! Anyway, if you look at the new thread that Mark started, with a graph of the results, it does all start to make a little sense. Hey guys, before we leave testing, how about a LOADING SPEED test? I saw one comment about "took awhile to load..."

nakamuram ( ) posted Tue, 02 September 2003 at 11:11 PM

Sorry, Tran-mapped hair is incorrect terminology. I just assumed the hair in Benchmark Version 1 used transparency maps. I just meant non-P5 Dynamic Hair.
