I have been bitchin about this for along time now, the best solution I found is this...don't post to the internet...If someone wants your images bad enough they will find a way to get it...you can code, you can disable stuff till your blue in the face...All for nothing....because you can't really defeat photoshop and the print screen key. I care about my work, I care about everyone elses work on this fine site...I just do not see how your gonna "lock" the images....so to me it's like trying to convince a republican the Iraqi war was wrong...it just can't be done.
Even tho you claim to care about your images and everyone elses, I see the same thing in your post that I have been bitching about myself. This thread is not for those wishing to spread the news that "either do not post your images to the net, or live with the fact they will be stolen" type replies. I've seen enough of those type posts to last me a life time. I did not post this to become a flame fest. Im asking for names here, those names who would like to be notified that their work might have been stolen or taken without permission, if it is seen on other websites. Mods: If this post is in the wrong forum, feel free to move it to the proper forum :) Thanx! ~Jani

Trust me, I've been working on building a website, and trying to figure out how to safeguard my images from theft...then I realized places like renderosity, 3d commune and poser pros don't have safeguards...and the print screen button sucks sometimes too LOL If there's a way though, I'm definitly interested in it.

Putting your name on the list Serpentis :) Altho there is no sure fire way {as of yet} of protecting images from being taken, we can def. let one another know when images are stolen, and where they are, and who took them. We need to make some positive steps forward in order to come to some sort of solution for this horrible situation that hardworking artists find themselves in. In the unlikely event someone should steal some of my art, I would like to know about it. But, like FyreSpiryt said, please contact me first as I have given permission to some of my friends to display my art on their websites or as part of their website design. Daio

Heck, if you can find a way to protect images, then add me to that list. As far as I'm aware, there is no known way to protect an image from being downloaded. Disable right-click? Disable caching to the local hard drive? Displaying the image in a custom viewer? All of these methods are defeated by a simple screen capture program (or hitting the "Screen Print" button) and, if needed, a little stitching in Photoshop. Not to rain on anyone's parade, but as long as an image is displayed to a user, then it can be "stolen". All these "security" methods do is piss off the casual user who uses right-click for navigation or who doesn't want to download the "Bondware Viewer" to see images.
I have my images stolen from time to time. Dale Williams was the last guy to rip off a couple my images. He did a lousy job of covering my sig too. These bozos always get found out. The images posted on the net are to low rez to do anything with any way. Keep you original 3d files and if they ever try to make ant money off your work sue the crap out of them. Other than that don't post on the internet if your worried about theft. Personaly I really don't worry about it much.
Gotcha all :) Just to let everyone know, I will ALWAYS contact the original artist first. From that point it is up to said original artist to do what they wish to do. Just watching backs here ;) The more people looking the better chances there are of getting most of it taken down. Truer words were never spoken ;) Im glad to have gotten such a positive feedback on this. This is what 'being a community' is all about :D ~Jani

This two statement cannot exclude each other: "..this is for the community members who really care about our artwork and what happens to it, and to each other." Yes, I am "For those who do not mind what happens to your images, please do not post here" Yes, I also don't care too much. I only don't want any kind of restrictions for downloading. I don't care if people use my pictures for wallpaper, private colections, etc, or any kind of fair use. If someone post somewhere without my permission, this is not theft, I don't lose nothing, I still have my pictures and also the related pz3. If someone sell my pictures, is very stupid who buy them, why he pay for something that can be downloaded for free? If you wish, you can add me to the list, I just only curious about who uses my pictures.
Stupidity also evolves!
Kawecki, What you would consider is not image theft, is not what all other people here would think. They want to let everyone know that their images are not for purposely downloading without permission. I will not be on the lookout for 'popularity' or those images who's owners are just curious to see who uses them. As you stated, you do not care who downloads your images, or what they do with them. If you had stated you wanted to know who has your images without permission, and wanted to be notified if your images were found so you could take further action..then I would add you to the list. Pierrecolat: This thread might be seen as silly for some, but its not to others. At least now we are beginning to see that there are indeed some artists here who do NOT think its ok to take images without asking permission, and I see that as a very positive step. To the rest of ya, Got your names on the list ;) ~Jani

Google has within it's own database over 3 BILLION web pages. Now, if only one percent of those pages are artwork related... You're going to be quite busy, sounds like you've gotten yourself into a 24/7/365 job. You wrote: "They want to let everyone know that their images are not for purposely downloading without permission." They give me permission whether they like it or not every time I view them. Each and every one of their images, including the page I'm typing upon now, are stored within a folder called temporary internet files. Personally, I feel you're providing a false sense of security to people here. Are you saying that you will guarantee the safety of artist images, all because of the due diligence of your newly, self-imposed policemanship? Good luck.
Personally, I feel you're providing a false sense of security to people here False sense of security?? How?? by telling people that there are those of us out there who will let them know if their images are found out there on another site?? Are you saying that you will guarantee the safety of artist images, all because of the due diligence of your newly, self-imposed policemanship? I NEVER said I was making a guarentee on anything. Get a grip. Altho I haven't been to the other forum yet..I have the sneaky suspicion you have TerraDreamer.. by this comment here..self-imposed policemanship If you haven't, then please accept my apology.

I guess I'm not fully aware of the reasons for this thread. I wanted to clarify that I posted to say I look out for images used improperly. I have no problem with someone using anything of mine for a wallpaper or included in a personal only screensaver. (xp has one that scrolls through your "my pictures" file)
...... Kendra
Maybe I do need to rephrase that..sorry Kendra. ;) Didn't mean it to sound as if anyone here objected to their images being used. Just that artists would like to be notified about their images being found on other sites without their permission.

I think everyone would want to know if their image was stolen unless they specifically said it was a give away. How about a checkbox on upload where the artist can select one of three options.. 1. Copyright protected, do not use for any purpose. 2. Private use for desktop and personal screensavers ok, all other uses reserved by copyright. 3. Public domain, do as you like. That way the folks who really want a pic may find several public domain images to chose from. Maybe if there is a public domain genre?
The only way right now of finding out if your images are being stolen, is by someone looking around on the net, and finding them, and notifying you of it. There are other ways I guess, like if you sign up with those offering digital watermarks..such as Digimark..but I beleive you have to check on it yourself..sort of like bring an image to attention..not sure about that tho, so dont quote me on it ;) Best way is still the old fashioned way tho..having people care about others artwork enough to actually dig around on the net looking for it..;)

I still think that this thread maked no sense. Why a list? Are you saying that if you notice an image been used illegally by someone not on the list that you will not inform them? And if this is not the case, why a list? If I see someones work being used illegally I will inform them. I don't need to be on a list to do this.
