Yes, this is very, very sad. She was destined to be our next Prime Minister. A brilliant, incredibly competent politician. In my view the best politician to come out of this country in decades. Much respected by all - not least by her political opponents. I remember the very first time I saw her in action in the mid-80's. And I said to myself instantly, - she'll be Prime Minister one day. She was leader of a political youth organisation at the time. And that is in spite of the fact that she was not in the same part of the political spectrum as me at all.... nevertheless I had the greatest respect for her, which I have for few politicians generally. Most of all she will be missed by her children and her husband. She was 46. A note to non-Scandinavians: Politicians in this part of the world almost never have bodyguards - you can see them on the train, on the street, in shops... just like you will see top stars in film and music, TV, etc. The ONLY exception is the Prime Minister himself. Sweden (and the rest of Scandinavia) is very human, very gentle... for the most part. Anna was out shopping for clothes by herself in central Stockholm, just a short while after holding a major political rally about the Euro referendum to be held on Sunday. And now she is gone. Stab wounds to several parts of the body, worst of all her liver was very badly damaged. Nearly 12 hours of micro and macrosurgery couldn't save her from massive internal hemorraging (bleeding). :[ Fish
We lost a Prime minister as well to a crazy rightwinger not long ago - condolences from Israel.
My deepest sympathies go out to her family and her people. Life is saddened by yet another senseless slaughter! Earths rivers are once again stained and flowing with blood ~ on a day such as this, Sept 11th especially! When will it all end? There is no reason on heaven or on earth for any violence against any Man, Women, Child or beast! ~b sending mama comfort hugs
That just seems so wrong & especially unexpected in Sweden... Condolences. :(

More danish sympathies to Lindh and Sweden. As one of the politicians of my country had the courage to say, more body guards are not the long-term answer. Working towards societies that do not spawn violent people is. It's easier said than done, but we can't all wear bullet-proof vests 24 hours a day. From what I know of Lindh, I think she would have agreed.
As a swede, i thank you for your kind words. However, no Swede seem to mention the 5 year old girl, that got stabbed to death today as well, for no reason, by a psychotic asshole. No offence, what happened to Anna Lindh is of course terrible, but i feel more sorry for the loss of a 5 year old kid whom had her whole life infront of her, especially when its the politicians whove let the the sickos out in the first place. And she somehow got "forgotten" in the headlines...

It is a tribute to the Scandinavian countries that their politicians can walk to work or shop for themselves, or even (gasp) go to the theatre and restaurant like normal people. I hope that this act of senselessness doesn't cause the folks who govern and minister to a country to become so afraid that they lock themselves away from the real world and treat all passersby as potential criminals. My condolences, Carolly
As a Swede, I thank you all for the condoleances. Needless to say, this was of course a shock to us all. I was on a business trip and after a dinner with collegues on Wednesday night, we got the message that she had been stabbed a few hours before. Thursday morning, we got the message that she passed away at 5.29 am after being in surgery for the entire night. It happened just a few days before our referendum on adoption of the Euro as our currency (it's held on Sunday). Anna Lindh was one of the politicians most visible in the debate and one wonders of course if the attack was somewhat connected to this. The attack took place just a few blocks from where Olof Palme was assassinated in 1986.
