Poser Python Scripting F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Dec 02 3:16 pm)

We now have a ProPack Section in the Poser FreeStuff.
Check out the new Poser Python Wish List thread. If you have an idea for a script, jot it down and maybe someone can write it. If you're looking to write a script, check out this thread for useful suggestions.

Also, check out the official Python site for interpreters, sample code, applications, cool links and debuggers. This is THE central site for Python.

You can now attach text files to your posts to pass around scripts. Just attach the script as a txt file like you would a jpg or gif. Since the forum will use a random name for the file in the link, you should give instructions on what the file name should be and where to install it. Its a good idea to usually put that info right in the script file as well.

Subject: Simulating the P4 Material Box

I'm toying with the idea of using Python to simulate the P4 Material Window in Poser 5. I think it would help transition P4 people to P5 and also helpful when I'm making content compatible with P4. What do you think of this, or am I quite mad?

Hmm. One of the reasons I don't spend much time in P5 is the whole node business; I partly understand it, but it seems like a lot more trouble for no real gain in the realms where I use Poser. I'd probably get into P5 more if I could use the familiar mtl dialog. But my tendencies are not typical, because I'm more of a technical illustrator than an artist. For the artists, I suspect they'd be better off jumping into the deep end of the pool, and learning the more complicated and more flexible actions right away.

I don't know what users find so difficult about nodes. Nodes is what I love about P5. They are not so difficult. Are you mad? Nah, just, like most people, resistant to change.

>Nah, just, like most people, resistant to change. Bingo. I think the script is a great idea. While I think the Material Room is the best thing since procedural texturing, there are a quite a number of people who don't want to learn it. Such a script would help them a lot.

There are conformers and trouble-makers. If it wasn't for the trouble-makers, we'd still be living in caves.
