Subject: Problem with Mihai M3 Hair

Engel47 ( ) posted Wed, 17 September 2003 at 10:57 AM · edited Wed, 20 November 2024 at 10:29 AM

I can load M3, apply textures, morphs, pose him etc with no problems at all - but as soon as I apply the Mihai hair poser stops responding - anyone else having problems with it and what can do I do?????

I suspect your problem is that you just don't have the system resources to deal with M3, his textures, and the very resource-intensive Mihai hair. The thread in the above link gives instructions on how to reduce the texture sizes of the hair. (It's a different hair model, but the principle is the same.) Others things that may help: Make sure you have all Poser updates applied. Shut down any unnecessary programs that might be running the background. Increase your Windows swap file size.

If you're using P5 and this occurs when you try to render, there was another post about this over the weekend. Try rendering using the P4 renderer. I was experiencing the same problem. It's a firely renderer bug with all Neftis hair.

I don't think it's actually a Firefly bug. It's just that Firefly uses a lot of system resources, and so does Neftis' hair. If you have a high-powered computer, or if you reduce the size of the hair textures, it renders with Firefly just fine.

Could be.....but I find simply using the P4 renderer to be an easier fix than messing with resource settings, changing file sizes and the like. I have a PIV, 1.7ghz with 512 mb DDR ram and XP pro. I've rendered textures a lot larger than this using the P5 renderer. It seems like their must be something in the way firefly renders the hair files.....but with P5 it's hard to say :) The link includes comments from Neftis, the hair creator.

It's alot easier to reduce the texture size using a photo editor. You have to think that the Yann/Casual/French/Mihai hairs have like what? 4 or 5 texture maps and then 4 or 5 trans maps on top of that and each are lets say 1000x1000 or so. That's alot of large pictures on top of the body texture, head texture, lash trans map, pubic hair trans map and then your props and clothes models and their textures. Mike 3 is no small prop with one morph those injection morphs eat up alot of resources too. So reducing texture sizes is what I've found to be the most easiest thing to do. I even do it with the high resoultion body textures. Just back up your folders. I've reduced my favorite the Yann hair and French textures to 1/4 of their original size and I see no difference in quality. It's all good.... 8^)

The texture maps are pretty huge. If Engel's computer is locking up when he just loads the hair, switching to the P4 renderer isn't going to help. My computer is pretty new, and can handle this hair, even with Firefly, but I will probably make myself some lower-res textures and MATs, just to speed things up a little.

Thanks all - and randym77 is right - I can do all the renders I want p4 or firefly - with all the head and body morphs injected, textures and clothes applied and backgrounds in place - but when I try to add the Mihai hair it does not even get as far as applying it - I get the little clock and then, after a while the message that Poser has stopped responding and I have to go to task manager and close the program down!! I really dont know what the heck is happening - I can still load other hair such as Daz hair for M2 and V3 hair, the only problem is the Mihai hair.

The hair texture maps are HUGE. Like, 1200 x 1200. Each. If I were you, I would copy the texture files to a safe place, then reduce the size of the originals. You could probably go to 1/4 the size, with it still looking pretty good.

Thanks Randym77, and everyone else that took time out to reply - I wil try that and see how it goes. You will hear if it doesn't work ;-)
