for those that know.... is poser pro pack more useful for creating new character morphs etc than poser 5 is? --thanks, Essie

They're about the same, IMO. Personally, I don't think Poser is all that great for creating new character morphs, though I know some people do it, with great success. Try downloading the demo of Extreme Morph 3D. It's cheap (compared to Z-Brush, anyway), and it's meant to work with Poser.

The only thing ProPack has that Poser 5 doesn't have are the plugins for 3ds, LW and C4D. Other than that, Poser 5 = ProPack + FireFly + Material Room + Cloth Room + Hair Room + Face Room + new Figures + Content Room + new Parm Dials + direct manipulation tool + morph putty + Collision Detection + updated Python + ... Most tools you'd use for basic morph creation be in both ProPack and P5. However, the cloth room can be very useful for creating morphs even for non-dynamic clothing items.

Make sure you check out the help section at the Extreme Morph web site. They have three great tutorials there. The first one shows you how the controls work. The other two show you how to create a head morph and a full body morph for Poser.

Essie, Try Anim8or. It's free, easy and totally compatible with obj format. I have 3d max, but I make all my poser morphs in anim8or. You can find a tute on making morphs for poser in anim8or here http://3dtoday.com/tutorials/2000/sept/posermorph/default.asp mac

I quite like Anim8or, too. I found it much easier to learn than the other programs I've tried (though that's very a much a personal thing). It's the program I usually use for making props. However, I'm finding Extreme Morph 3D a lot better for the kind of shaping you need for creating head and body morphs. I've never tried Max. It's way too pricey for me at this point. But I'm curious about it. What does it give you for $3,000 that the free Anim8or doesn't have?

I couldn't compare anim8or with extreme morph, since I've never used EM. I just like anim8or's ability to import/export an obj without messing it up. What does max give you for $3,000? Well, I use max v3.1 which I picked up for a lot less than that. I never upgraded because a lot of the improvements are to do with animation, ehich is of no use to me. What it gives you is pretty simple. The tools to create ANY object you can imagine. Note the word 'tools' - not 'ability'. That's another story. Literally anything you can think of can be made in max if you have the patience and knowledge of technique to do it. And it's not a difficult app to learn. Like any other 3d app, it's as good as you. If you take the time to learn it, it's amazing what you can do in it. I've been using it for 3 years now and there are entire areas of it I haven't even looked at yet. It's very complex, but can be used in 'sections'. If you don't need to use Particles or NURBS, just leave 'em till you're ready. The other thing I really like about max is that it's the only app I have which is TOTALLY customisable. Everything from the interface, buttons and icons to the save/open paths can be set in preferences. I have all my own custom keyboard shortcuts and I just LOVE it. If only all apps allowed me to do that! mac

Poser 5 faceroom ONLY works with the Poser 5 default figures. The commonly used models Victoria and Micahel CANNOT be morphed using it. ExtremeMorph3d can morph all of the models. Also, many artists have used ZBrush to good results.

Thanks, Mac. Maybe I'll give the free version of Max a try.

PandaPride ( ) posted Sun, 05 October 2003 at 3:57 PM

I own 3d max, but i haven't had the chance to learn it just yet. I had it on my old pc before I got my new dell, but never re installed it. I need it for one of my up coming classes so I suppose I should re install and try learning it. Thanks all for the input and help. --Essie

I never had any luck trying to learn Extreme Morph 3D a year ago. I'd hoped Konan had produced new tutorials since then, but he hasn't. Oh well, maybe one day I'll find a good program that is both cheap and easy to learn.

maclean, you might want to consider upgrading to MAX 5 or 6... the new E-Poly tools are amazing... based heavily upon on those in Mirai or Wings3D, with full support of Edgeloops and Edgerings.

maclean ( ) posted Mon, 06 October 2003 at 2:22 PM

Thanks DraX, I read about the new version and considered it, but I don't know if I have the money right now. But it looks pretty amazing. What I really need to do first is upgrade my puter first. Now..... which client owes me most money? LOL. mac

Edgeloops&Edgerings...isn't that a law firm???
