Subject: Maconverter for OS X ?

purplehayes ( ) posted Sun, 05 October 2003 at 6:45 PM · edited Sun, 12 January 2025 at 9:27 AM

Hello everyone... This question is not directly related to Poser, but since it concerns an helper app, I tought I'd ask here first. I'll go to the macintosh forum later If I don't see anything happening here... I am about to finally run in OSX only. I recently acquired Poser 5 OSX, and it's fun. It was almost my only fave software not currently running on OSX. So a good time for a migration...but then... Yes, I admit: i'm a freebie junkie. And freebies are produced mostly for PC people. But...there was this set of MartinC's utilities to convert and install PC files on the Mac... So, before I attempt to totally migrate to OSX: Is there a OSX versions of MatinC's utilities, or equivalent software to do the same job, on OS X, than these wonderful pieces of software ? Or will I restrain myself to keep a Mac OS9 partition to run these (and some other) apps ? Answers greatly appreciated. PH

According to some users, P5X doesn't require Maconverter, since OS X no longer needs resource forks. Personally I doubt this is true, but there's no X-version of Maconverter.

Besides Maconverter there are other useful utilities available at www.soft-rabbit.com that are still reliant upon OS9 (and will probably always be OS9 only). I have never made a partition strictly for OS9 and it doesn't really seem to be necessary contrary to other messages I've read. I currently boot into the latest version of OSX only and, if it's needed by some old program or utility, OS9 will first boot before launching that program or utility. For myself, I wouldn't get rid of OS9 just yet. There still are lots of old helpful utlities and such that would require it. My recommendation to you is to just get rid of your partition for OS9 so you're not wasting as much disk space and then reintall OS9 without a partition. If disk space is the issue then I would recommend you look into an additional internal or external drive. They are very cheap these days compared with how much they used to go for. Hope that helps, Dkal

Thank you all, especially to the person who posted the link... Decision made: i keep a Mac OS9 partition (...silly as it might seem, I prefer to keep things separated). As for the separate new drive, I now am really itching for it (as for a DVD reader/writer), but even at nowadays' low prices, those new toys are way beyond our (me and my lover's) means. The eMac my lover and I are sharing now was given to us by a wealthy friend of ours who was scared to hear we were merely contemplating the possibility to use PC's because they were cheaper than the new mac Machines and ran faster than what we had then: a 6200. But we don't know, maybe this wil happen sooner than we think... Thanks again to all. PH

From the Poser 5 OS X ReadMe file: Previous versions of Poser stored library file icons, and some geometry information, using the resource fork on the Mac, and .RSR files on Windows, which made sharing of files between operating systems difficult. Poser 5 eliminates the reliance on this mechanism. The .RSR files used for icons (or resource fork on the Mac) will be converted to cross platform .PNG image files the first time a library category is visited. There may be a momentary delay when this conversion happens. The original .RSR files will NOT be automatically deleted, however, they may be manually discarded if you want to clean up your directories. The .RSR geometry information stored in conjunction with .OBJ files will no longer be used. Poser 5 will read the geometry information directly from the .OBJ files only. Files converted by Poser 5 to .PNG can now be shared across Macintosh and Windows with other Poser 4 with Pro Pack or later users without having to convert the creator types or create an .RSR.

I'm waiting for delivery of Poser5Mac, but Poser 4 runs fine in OSX Classic mode. You might want to keep P4 around if you have disk space, then link its Runtime to Poser 5, since it can access multiple Runtimes. PC .exe files such as installers, some utilities and programs like the PC versions of my XprssnMagics still won't run on OSX, so you need Mac versions. HTH - Elisa/gryffnn

I keep OS 9 on a separate partition primarily so that I can boot into it (I have an older Mac that still can boot OS 9) and do disk repairs on the OS X partition with OS 9's disk utility and defragmentation with Norton Utilities Speed Disk (I have Systemworks 2.0) when the need arises.
