Subject: How to order Libraries!!!!

aodor ( ) posted Tue, 21 October 2003 at 6:00 PM · edited Mon, 23 December 2024 at 5:19 PM

Hi: Is there some utility or tutorial which shows how to order the libraries in P4PP and P5? The way they get installed is a nightmare, hair with injectors and peolple etc. Can they be ordered in folders, by subject or any other way without disrupting the programs functionality? Alberto

in poser 5 you can make sub folders- :)) in poser 4 you need a program in the marketplace called PBooost to make sub folder.

My runtimes are hopelessly messy. I have duplicates of many items, and things aren't organized the way I'd like them. Has anyone tried any of the various programs sold in the MP for organizing runtimes? Runtime Integrator, Poser Product Manager, etc. Or would it be easier just to delete everything and start over?

I just bought PBoost, It looks great and works with P3, P4 and P5 Runtimes.

The main thing is to organize your downloads as you download items... and keep being organized all the way through. On a Mac it is easy to keep most stuff out of the Runtime, so I have lots and lots of folders and subfolders in the poser directory. I have changed my organization a couple of times. I no longer keep clothing textures and skin textures separate from the item they are for, and raised ethnicity to a second tier qualifier. I download into these categories: Animal, Architecture, Character, Clothing, Hair, Lights, Misc Stuff, Territory. When carried over to the Mac, they get divided further. "Animals", for example has about 30 folders: cats, dogs, birds, mech animals, dragons, horses, dinosaurs, insects, etc.. When working on an picture, I rummage through the folders and install those items which look like they ought to be suitable. For example, I'm working on an undead mermaid image so have lots of sea shells and critters, boney things, and treasure chests and jewelry. I see no reason to clutter up a Runtime with 40 Gigs of stuff not being currently used... but I'm trying to get better about at least opening items which were purchased. If I've opened something and it has 67 MAT poses which aren't needed, I'm quite apt to go in with a vacuum and get rid of the space-wasters. How you download and organize is going to be a reflection of your work style and the sorts of images you are creating. An aviation artist would want more divisions for mechanical things, while someone specializing in pin-ups wouldn't need Animals or Territory at all, but would raise Jewelry to a top tier. Maybe you wish to organize by ethnicity (everything Greek in a folder whether it is furniture, clothing, or musical instruments). Maybe you wish to organize by style such as cartoon/manga/real. Just decide upon a method and do it. You can always change your mind later. It doesn't help that some hair is a hair, some is a figure and some is a prop. [grammatically that sentence is about as structured as the models] However, if I can manage it until it gets into Runtime, I'll have an easier time finding it afterwards! My main suggestion if your Runtime resembles an explosion in a discount store is not to walk away from it, but to nibble at the problem in smaller pieces. For example, collect all the animals and animal props and get them squared away. Then tackle all the hair or jewelry or furniture. Just grab each section and tidy it up. That way as you finish each bit you can reward yourself with a cup of coffee (or whatever) and look over the folder like a farmer looking over tidy productive neatly-tilled rows... ready for harvest. The problem I have is that I use Vue with Poser. Vue only looks in the main Runtime. That means I have either keep everything in the main runtime, or keep duplicates in the main runtime. I find myself installing anything I want to use in Vue into the main Poser 4 runtime, just for convenience's sake. Also, someone was saying that if you put all the textures in the main texture folder, no subfolders, Poser rendering would be faster?

randym77, the texture part is nonsense IMO. What is needed is the REFERENCES to be correct. Once they're correct, the textures can in essence be ANYWHERE - even on a CD, as long as it's in the drive when you're rendering ;o) Of course Poser prefers textures to be in Runtimetextures but it doesn't work any faster in finding something in Runtimetextures than in RuntimetexturesTrekkieGrrrl. Have anybody with PBooost had problems with Vue? PBoost still keeps the things in ONE Runtime, but it creates lots of new folders in it.

You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA
Using Poser since 2002. Currently at Version 11.1 - Win 10.

You can use several Runtimes in PBoost, at least in the latest version which I bought yesterday. I still have to finish organizing with PBoost to see how useful it is, but it looks promissing.

Yeah, but a lot of items don't have correct references. And it's easier to just move/copy the textures than to check and fix all the references. Also, someone told me that you can have multiple runtimes with Vue, you just have to keep all the textures in the main texture folder, or something like that. I just bought PBoost from PoserPros. Haven't had time to figure out how it works yet, but hopefully it will help....

Run Correct Reference Program (Freebie). Takes care of it. From maker of PBoost :-)

Helpful information when naming library sub-folders. Poser reads folders in this order. Numbers - 01 people Uppercase letters - People Lowercase letters - people They will appear in the menu in this order 01 people People people So, if you have a folder that you want to appear as the default folder when poser opens, name it '01 whatever'. My folders are all numbered from 01 - 99 + name - like '31 vicki clothes' or whatever. This works for every library category. mac mac

I don't think Correct Reference will fix the Vue problem, though. What I really want is something that will let me rename product files, and easily install, uninstall, or move them around. So I could, for example, move all my Halloween stuff into my main Runtime in October, then move them into a different Runtime afterwards, to make room for the Thanksgiving and Christmas stuff.
