Subject: Bizarre display problem in Poser 4

I have several computers and I have installed Poser 4 on two of them, both with AMD Athlon 2100 processors but with different graphics cards and different operating syatems, one with Win 98 and the other Win XP Home. I found that when I use Poser in 'cartoon + line' mode, one of the PCs shows hidden lines (the 98 version) and the other doesn't. Despite long and hard contemplation I couldn't come up with any rational explanation for this. Recently my XP machine crashed and I had to reinstall Windows four times before it was working again properly (don't you just love Microsoft?). In the process the registry had lost all knowledge of Poser so I reinstalled it, intending to then delete the original version. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that the two identical versions of Poser, on the same machine, with the same operating system and the same graphics card, on the same day, displayed the same file differently. Gobsmacked or what?!! Here are the two images. Can anybody explain this? The one on the left is from the original installation and is how it has always been, and the one on the right is the same file as shown by the new installation. The images are a bit on the small side because if I zoom in the hidden line problem disappears. A solution woyld be most welcome because I really would like to run Poser on the Win 98 machine, and cartoon + line is my favourite mode. The (un)hidden lines make the new version unworkable. Thanks in advance, Maz

There are two cartoon modes, one with and one without lines. Are you sure you didn't select the wrong mode on the machines?

Click on the chest or arm, and the headline displays should disappear.

Mason: No, it's definitely the same mode on both machines. The other cartoon mode doesn't have any lines at all. mateo sancarlos: Again no. You're thinking that I had clicked on the head, but that's not the case. The problem occurs everywhere on the body at the same time. Consequently the eyes and teeth show up inside the head, the ears show through the hair, the hands show up through the body and so on. It is as if the Poser rendering engine has a hidden-lines on/off switch, but as far as I know it hasn't. I'll try installing on a third machine later today to see what that does. I wonder if it's because the machines are networked and Poser just doesn't like having two instances of itself on the same network? Unlikely, because everything else about Poser seems OK, just this one annoying 'feature'.

I've tried it on a third machine now, not connected to the network. This exhibits the same problem with teeth showing through the skin etc. I've also discovered that the one good installation lets me change the foreground colour in display modes 2 and 3 (outline and wireframe) whereas the three problematic installations will only let me have these modes in magenta. Could some of you guys out there try an experiment for me and see if Poser will let you change the foreground colour in outline and wireframe modes? I'd like a bit more background info before I tell Curious Labs that I think there's a problem. Thanks, Maz

It suddenly occurred to me what the problem was. My new installations on all three machines were straight from the disk out of the box. The earlier one was with the version 4.03 upgrade. I've just applied the upgrade to one of the problem installations and the problem has disappeared as if by magic. Why didn't I think of that in the first place? Duh! Maz

I use Poser 4 under Windows 98 with a A-TEK NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 400 graphics card, and I don't have that problem with Cartoon w/Line mode. I do however get the hidden line problem in Sketch Render mode.
