Subject: Help please with Kozaburo's hair.

When I try to use some of Kozaburo's wonderful hair I get the message "this is not a valid Poser file" and it won't open the hair. I'm using P5 and I installed the hair using PInstall, I don't think all the hair is in the hair folder, should it be? Can anyone suggest what I might be doing wrong here and how to fix it? Thanks Catlin

Koz's long hair is in my character library, not a hair library. Also the mats are in the pose library.

Mac or PC? Most of Kozaburo's zips include what I assume is the data for MAC icons in a separate folder, it is possible that PInstall is copying these over the HR2s (or whatever), thus leaving you with a file full of nonsense - try dragging one of the hair files to an open Notepad/Wordpad/Word window and see if it looks OK: the first character should be a {, if you get a string of odd characters before that it's a MAC style file, if it's all gibberish it's just the icon for a Mac. Deleting spurious characters usually clears up files that are Mac style but valid; if the file has been overwritten you will need to extract the correct version from the zip by hand and put in place of the improper one.

Thanks I'll give that a try. I haven't looked at the files in notepad yet so I have no idea what's in there and perhaps the Mac thing is the problem. If I manually install the hair should I put them in the hair library or the character library as RichardT suggested? Catlin

Keep in mind it may depend on which hair you are looking at, they can be hair or character files. hr2's (hair) go in hair, cr2's (characters) go in as characters. I am on a PC running Poser 5 and Poser Pro pack

Ok I'll keep that in mind. I'm really quite scared to install any files myself although everyone tells me I should learn where everything goes. Maybe now is the time for me to learn some more about how P5 works. 8) Thanks Catlin

This may be a good intro. http://www.morphography.uk.vu/fileguide_1.html

As to learning where everything goes, this is a good idea just for general info, and for those times when the zip extract paths have conflicting info in them and might duplicate folders in your Poser directory. B4 I install anything, especially the .exe files, I extract them to a folder I call "Extract for Viewing" using path info. This lets me take a look at stuff to make sure it is going to end up in the right place. [If everything checks out you can even cut/paste files right into your Poser directory from the viewing folder in most cases. 3DPO Explorer is a good utility to use with this method.]

Catlin, P5 has copied the Macfiles into your library, this has happened to me as well one time. Just unzip the files into a temp folder and only replace the hairfile in your library that should fix it.

Thanks. 8) I haven't got round to fixing things yet 'cos I've been too busy, but if I get a chance I'll try it tonight. Thanks very much peeps you've been a great help. 8) Catlin
