Subject: Biblical era clothing resources?

DCArt ( ) posted Tue, 18 November 2003 at 1:32 PM · edited Sat, 11 January 2025 at 12:46 PM

Does anyone know of any good books, or even online resources, that would have detailed reference sketches or paintings of "authentic" clothing for peoples of the bible? I'd probably need some examples of robes, shawls, head wear, sandals and other footwear, and even hairstyles, to depict Old and New testament stories. So examples of male and female clothing from all related nationalities (Hebrew, Sumerian, Babylonian, Roman, Egyptian, and so on) would be much desired.

I suggest Awake! and the Watch Tower or some of the books from Jehova's Witnesses. There are lots of good pictures of people wearing authentic clothes.

Or at any library there ought to be books with clothes from that time.

Thanks for the mentions ... I will check those out, but in general, I also will probably prefer resources that are non-denominational and more historical in their perspective.

That costume place is interesting. Wonder how they found out what angels wear. Another suggestion for sources would be old master art.

I agree, these are nice resources! Thanks for the tips! Denise

The bible and history are two different things. The bible is a work of fiction and history has actually happened. I wonder if this will start an argument? :)

8-) I was trying to avoid starting a debate ... LOL I am NOT gonna go there, nor will I get into my own views on the bible ... because I know this thread will end up being 200 posts long ROFL My request for "historical" sources is because I prefer to use pictures that are reasonably accurate for the time period being depicted. Please, let's not turn this into a religious discussion, because that wasn't the intent. 8-)

Deecey, Poserworld has some biblical robes and stuff, but you have to have a subscription. However, I can assure you that you won't regret getting a subscription, even just to try it out for a bit. There is a lot of good stuff there and you might just find more than you bargained for :) Silke

I know I should keep my mouth shut, but.....many of the sites in the Bible that were previously thought to be fiction were later proven by archeological evidence. All fiction? I think not. How much? Who knows?

xantor ( ) posted Wed, 19 November 2003 at 10:12 AM

Anyone can right a book of fiction with real locations. Many people already have.

xantor: I understand your intentions ... I said what I said to try to ward off any debates. No offense taken. It's best to leave it at that. 8-) Kirwyn, I agree ... I take a middle of the road approach to the bible ... it is history interlaced with beliefs and traditions. Silke - I believe I do have the Biblical clothing from when I was a PoserWorld member, but I will probably be using V3 and M3. Besides I enjoy making my own as well. 8-)

Will you make any of these clothing available after you have made them for V3 and M3?
