Subject: Poser files and packing .sit files

Hi, Any chance of anyone telling me what to put in a .sit file for a poser product packed on a PC with Stuffit ? Directory structure included ? I know most of the mac-crowd can read .zip-files just fine, but if it's easier to do a one-click thing with a .sit file, I'd prefer creating an extra file for my stuff. Also - would a self-extractor created on the PC platform work on the mac-platform ? Thanks ever so much in advance :-) ~S

A .sit file would not make a big difference to a .zip file. Both formats are handled by Stuffit Expander and the result would be the same. As far as I know Stuffit can not extract straight to the Runtime target directories. To do this, an installer (VISE) would be required.

... And most of us Mac users are happy with Martin's tools and and stick the files where they need to go. The only problem I can see is that they are for OS9 only and in another year or two the probable majority of users will have upgraded to OSX. Carolly

So all in all it'd just be as easy to throw the runtime folder into a .sit directory, and you'd be happy to take it from there ? Thanks, btw :-) ~S

Use a zip file. With Mac OS 9 and OS X, it doesn't matter any more whether it's zip or sit. The main difference is the compression: both sitx and rar files are smaller than zip files, when the same item is compressed by each.

With smaller files, it doesn't matter. With really big files an extra 10% squeezed out might make a difference. Actually, the most important thing for us Mac users is to be careful of name lengths in everything including textures. I continually have to go back and edit names to include the .jpg at the end because somebody named the file "montmorency_sweater_scarlet_with_tesselated_fractal_reindeer.jpg" and the Mac goes "huh?". I've had to do this even with purchased products. The other thing to watch if you are making CDs is to use a data format such as Joliet which can be read across platforms. Otherwise the names will get truncated to the DOS 8.3 format, which makes loading textures hellacious. Yes, I've had to go in and guess and rename even on purchased products. Carolly

I know about the format issues, the company I work for has crossplatform software. I heard somewhere that rsr files aren't necessarry on the mac-end, neither are MATs. Is this correct ? I'm a big fan of not adding stuff that's not needed so if it's not, I won't add files like that. ~S

For Poser 4 for the Mac, both rsr files and MATs ARE needed for the MAC. MacConverter will incorporate the information from the rsr file into the poser file to provide a thumbnail image. If you do not provide the rsr, your Mac users will not have thumbnails - just the little shrugging man. And MAT files are needed for the same reasons that PC users need them - they make applying textures much easier. :) Daio

ah, ok, thanks, Daio I'm baselining on Poser 4.01, so that's good to know :-) ~S

**would a self-extractor created on the PC platform work on the mac-platform ?**No, EXE files do not run on Macs.

Thank you, Obi Wan ;-) I meant .sit selfextractors, not compiled executables, in case this was unclear. I've bookmarked this, again, thanks for the feedback :-) ~S

Are you talking about .hqx (or however it goes: I really am dyslexic)?
