PC's might have come first, but WIMP's? Weren't they on Apples first? Actually, didn't Atari have them before PC's? And (correct me if I'm wrong) didn't HP come up with the idea of Windows and thought better of it? Although, I use a PC, so long live PC's and poop on Macs.

Macs rule, PC's drool. I use both on a regular basis for 3D work. The PC is numerically twice as fast, but the mac still ourperforms it. The software argument is the worst thing I have ever heard from PC users. There isn't anything I have seen that I have not been able to find software for on my mac. Often there are innovative mac programs that you'll find no equivalent for on the PC. One amazing thing about macs is their amazing shareware support. There are a huge amount of people (usually about 30-40 new apps are eleased each day) buildiong great shareware for the rest of us and it works! And nw, with he powermac G5, the mac is FASTER than most PC's. The supercomputer cluster built at Virginia Tech University of just 1100 G5's is now THE THIRD FASTEST SUPERCOMPUTER IN THE WORLD. This beats out Livermore Lab's cluster of 2200 2.4 Ghz dual Xeon units, and cost about 1/10 as much (just speculating) So the software argument is bunk, the speed argument is bunk, why do people still hate macs? I don't hate PC's, and every time I help someone out I don't finger them for using a PC. Maybe I should.

Aye, all of MadMax's pro-Mac propoganda can be countered with pro-PC propoganda, but this is not a Mac vs. PC thread, technically. The reason I personally despise Macs is because of Microsoft's involvement with them. When they decided to build an expensive, user-friendly, proprietary Personal Computer, they came up with the Mac. It's Microsoft's way of dominating the niche markey, as well as the mass market. Hell, most Mac owners don't even know that Microsoft owns and controls Apple, in the first place. Most Mac owners think they are "breaking away" from the Microsoft giant, when in fact they are putting more money per computer into Gate's deep, deep pockets... Macs account for merely 3% of consumer sales. But they make up more than 85% of the graphics "professional" world. The reason for this is simple, many schools have Macs, and people learn on them faster because of the way they were designed, with the idiot-user in mind. I don't mean to suggest that Mac users are all idiots, merely that they are nearly idiot proof. ALthough every Mac users will say the "dual g-50,000 processor" is faster than WHATEVER, it's just a fable. Both the Pentium and the Athlon beat down the Mac in the workplace, which "coincidentally" has NO Macs in it. The largest graphics company in the Seattle Area here has exactly 5 dual G5 setups, but could only get one running, and the entire rest of their division runs off PC's. So the fallacy of graphics professionals "choosing" Macs is just that, a fallacy... This is because the Mac doesn't interface with the NOS, making them nearly useless from a professional level. Someone mentioned the world's third fastest supercomputer being powered on G5's, but again this is all just speculation, and propoganda. Who would bother bragging about the THIRD fastest, anyways? If so, then the first and second fastest are surely (and by surely I mean, also speculating) AMD Athlon 64-based. Actually, you can see one at the link... Not one of "the world's speculated fastest", but it's a decent article. But, the biggest beef i have with Macs is the price. For the cost of ONE dual G5, I could build nearly ten AMD systems from scratch, network them all together, and beat down any possible render time that a single Mac might pull. So, the RENDER cost is much, much greater on a fruit-based PC, making them obviously not the choice for a professional with any kinds of math skills. Funny thing, but guess who makes the socket and FSB for the dual G5? Advanced Micro Devices, more commonly known as AMD... But, do whatever you like, for our artistic purposes they are just brushes, and our monitors are the canvas...I have nothing against Macs, even worked on the original Macintosh back in the day (of course, you needed a 1-megohm probe to work in the thing, or you'd get 'accidentally' defibrillated..;). They have their uses; their only problem is the stubborn resistance to making their an open standard, which is why they cost so dang much..;) a lot of musicians and artists use them.

"Someone mentioned the world's third fastest supercomputer being powered on G5's, but again this is all just speculation, and propoganda." Go to your link again, and where it says top500, click that. http://www.top500/org. THen go to "current list." Click list 22 (most recent) in html format and look at spot #3. I didn't make that up. That aside, I apologize to Nuski for PC-bashing in this thread. Nice explosion effect, really cool!
How about price ? I can build a dual 2.2Ghz Xeon machine with a fair 128Mb Vid card, 1Gb of DDR and all the rest for around $1250.oo U.S.(without monitor),........what would the equivalent Mac cost me ? Of course there's no building it myself either. One of my best friends is a mac user,....his argument was always "no blue screen of death",......no, he's right,...Macs just freeze.

Oh goodie, another Mac vs. PC war! hehehe.... I own both, a PC and a Macintosh G4. Used PCs exclusively for 7+ years. Now I prefer the Mac. And to think I was sooo closed minded toward the Mac (actually felt sorry for Mac users)... well, my Mac doesn't freeze. I just switched from Windows 98 on the PC (which is newer than my Mac), to Windows 2000. Hope it crashes less with that one. Yes, I have Bryce on both machines. The Mac works circles around the PC, but as far as ease of use.... I can do either one.
As a PC user with 2 dual Intel systems and a uni proc system I have this to save about this whole PC versus Mac business .... For the PC people their final and last ditch argument concerning this matter is always about money and how much more buying power you get with a PC purchase or home build than what you get with a Mac. It is unfortunant that the PC computing experience boils down to money, but it ultimately does for most people. If you have a friend that denies that then ask them why they bought a PC instead of a Mac. They can not say software titles because that is no longer the case. Now the Mac user is not so concerned about the 'bottom line' as they are about the 'feel' and use of their computer. The computing experience is what counts, I have used a Mac before and there is no way that a PC can come close to the excellence and overall superior feel of the Mac. Period. PC users should not even try to debate this point. As far as benchmarks, well, any company can make any of the numbers appear the way they want them to. It is called marketing and the manufactures will try to make you believe what THEY want you to believe. Of course most folks read on the 7th grade level so this in not very hard for the manufacturers to accomplish. In 20 or so years of computing I have known more pissed off and unhappy PC users than I have known pissed off and unhappy Apple / Mac users, but then I suppose that is what buying power gets the PC user. My apologies if anyone has been offended by my views .. :) BabaLouie
Thanks Syncopate, I must admit that for a number of years I was bias against the Mac, but one day I started thinking about how narrow minded that was of me, especially since I had never used one and could only base my bias on ignorance. Sooo I used one that belonged to a friend, was impressed, went to an Apple Store and was completely sold on the Mac. Hurry up Q104! :-) BabaLouie
They may sell them on the beaches, and in the houses, I will never....buy a mac!

Yea verily, what erosiaart has said is true and is written in the book of Apple. It is written that the one known as Steve will be victor over the dark one, and the dark one will be made to sit in a darken room and write code for the new Mac's. And in that day the world will be as bright and beautiful as a ripen Apple. So be it ! he he :) BabaLouie
I am a Dragon. I was born in the year of the Dragon. I follow the Dragon. Dragons do not eat Apples. Apples to me are no noble cause. The only way a dragon would eat an apple is if it was inside the stomach of some hapless schmoe. If the Earth was as beautiful as an apple, I would eat it. The whole thing, in one bite. All of this is a metaphor for how cool I am, how cool dragons are in general, and how much other people who are dragon-like totally rule. Also, a metaphor detailing how silly and powerless a piece of fruit would be in the face of such an onslaught would be. Dragons do not eat apples, NOT because apples would harm them, but because they do not have enough calories. Bah!
