THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: To freeze, or to break out the welding-torch...HELP!

Well, its another question for you guys. I'm trying to import files from www.3dlapidary.com into bryce. Every single time, it gets to the loading box, then freezes. Completely. Ctrl-alt-delete brings up the "bryce has encountered a problem and has to close" thing. I don't understand WHY I am having TROUBLE!!!

the model is probably giving bryce the willies... if it's 3ds or lwv, try downloading wings3d (.com), importing it there, and exporting it again. should fix it. (i think) drac

3dlapidary has it's models all in the .dxf format.

I have found in my experience with Bryce that other model formats load much faster than .dxf. I have had big .dxf files take ten minutes or more to load. Sometimes they take so much time that it does seem like the program is frozen, but they load...most of the time. Lots of free progs out there to convert a .dxf to a more easily digested file like a .3ds or .obj file. Check out the Modeling Forum too. Maybe some of the other folks in the Forum can recommend some.

I have a bunch of the free ones and I just tried a couple and they work for me. You've got the 5.0.1 update? It fixed some DXF problems. If not try another D/L and see if that file was corrupted. HTH; Dan

You did unzip the files? Just asking. a few posts down in X-mas Tree help I posted links to the Bryce 5 update page and a thing called grouper to fix poser files. Grouper won't help but the Bryce update does something to help Bryce deal with extra line feeds or something in DXF files. If you haven't run the update, do. This link takes you to the Corel update page.

Yes, they're unzipped. Yes, I have the update. No, it still don't work. I got a tip from the modeling forum that Rhino can import dxfs and export them as objs. It also has the explode option, so I think that will be the best solution.

I'm running a windows NT4 system with a pentium processor. I've got Bryce 5 with the update. I downloaded a bunch of these about a year ago they all import. If you downloaded corrupt files you should get a checksum error when you try to unzip. I tried downloading the button cut from the rounds and unzipped it fresh to my desktop. It imports fine. I'd hate to think you would have to convert these because they really should work as is. I don't have any other answers other than cycle the power, run defrag, and some kind or reg checker and see if the system is corrupt.

I can't understand yer lingo, Ringo! Don't ill-treat me pet dingo! Converting them won't mess up the actual objects, so as long as I get the same end results, I'm not sure it matters.

Tell me which models you're having problems with, please. I'll get them to you direct, if need be, in almost any other format you like. I would like to fix any problems that might arise from those downloads.

I can't manage to load ANY of them. Bryce just freezes. I'm sure a good file convert will solve it, though. Don't fret about it.

Melansian_Mentat ( ) posted Fri, 19 December 2003 at 7:38 AM

Yeah. It worked. I just fed it through poser, and it worked. No worries!

electroglyph ( ) posted Fri, 19 December 2003 at 8:41 AM

Oz... That's the problem! Because you're in the southern hemisphere, you'll have to turn your keyboard upside down and type up;) Seriously, If you're happy that's great. I just wish I could tell you a way to make it work direct. I can't remember what I did to fix mine other than running the patch.
