Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 22 9:27 pm)

Subject: The Poser Forums and you.. a fun(hopefully)discussion on why we are here.

PheonixRising ( ) posted Fri, 26 December 2003 at 5:35 AM · edited Thu, 23 January 2025 at 7:30 AM

Seen lots of discussion on what aspects of Poser we discuss ,or should, in the Poser forum. With products and questions aside what do we come into the forum for? Is it news, gossip, links, rants, cute posts, teach, tech support? What do we do here in the Poser Forum really? Just a philosophical question. Nothing implied or intended other than discussion. Being a discussion forum, I think it is expected, to a point, for people to discuss hot topics. . I know someone will bring up the "whining" phenomenon that is a hot topic lately. SO out of curiousity I decided to look it up for official meaning. Out of curiousity about this I decided to inquire. Dictionary.com says: v. whined, whining, whines v. intr. To complain or protest in a childish fashion. Complaining is different from whining when it isn't childish. -------------------- complain ( P ) Pronunciation Key (km-pln) intr.v. complained, complaining, complains To express feelings of pain, dissatisfaction, or resentment. -------------------- satisfaction ( P ) Pronunciation Key (sts-fkshn) n. The fulfillment or gratification of a desire, need, or appetite. Pleasure or contentment derived from such gratification. A source or means of gratification. Compensation for injury or loss; reparation. The opportunity to avenge a wrong; vindication. Assurance beyond doubt or question; complete conviction. -------------------- resentment ( P ) Pronunciation Key (r-zntmnt) n. Indignation or ill will felt as a result of a real or imagined grievance. -------------------- I think the part most people have trouble with out of all above is the childish part. The answer to my own question: "why do you come to the Poser Forum?" A: 1)To relax or look for entertainment while hoping for possible discussion or "heathy" debate that might expand my knowledge or enjoyment of Poser or my work with Poser and 3D. 2) To receive pleasure from sharing experience and/or knowledge with others who share my interest in Poser to their benefit. 3) To be aware of issues that might impact my ability to enjoy those things above, both pro and con. -Regards, Anton

Dunno about others, but I come here because I find the daily bitch sessions to be occassionally entertaining. I like the feeling of anticipation as I scan the threads, looking to see what the sore topic of the day will turn out to be. And every now and then I learn about a neat Poser related trick or website.

  1. To catch up on what's happening, being the largest forum news tends to hit here first. 2) To see what nice cool discovery has been made... erc, jcm and other things were aired here pretty much first, and some cool utilities have been aired here first. 3) To smirk and snicker and snarf at some of the things going on here 4) To see what's interesting people, keep an eye on who's doing what to whom and whether anyone's been stupid enough to try to sell anything of mine yet 5) To see what other people are making 6) To see if anyone is fielding questions to/for me rather than using email and to help one or two people when I can. 7) To pick fights with the admin 8) Because I like train wrecks 9) To see what store file/vendor has ignored copyright restrictions next 10) Because where else can you get all of the above in one place, and so quickly? As for childish, I try to never act my age. My shoe size is a far better guideline for behaviour.

God I miss the flame wars of the Poser yahoogroup of a few short years ago!!! Man those were the best!! Oh yeah... I come to see my friends (that's you gents and ladies) and their artworks. Oh... and to learn too. I love geeps tuts!!

75% : to learn new techniques about Poser. This forum greatly helped me going up in the steep poser5 learning curve. 20% : to learn were I can get some cool stuff I don't yet have. If I wasn't already married, I would have asked Little Dragon's hand long ago! 5% : to be astonished at the sheer amount of passion this forum can generate.

Finister ( ) posted Fri, 26 December 2003 at 6:20 AM

Information: Where else can you post a Poser question (general or specific) and get ten answers within ten minutes? This forum has been best for me when I need a Poser question answered. Entertainment: When you're waiting for a scene to render, it is fun to browse the forum and read the drama that is unfolding. Although, sometimes it's difficult to keep from starting some 'harmless' trouble of ones own. It does amaze me though how many folks take these things as a personal insult instead of an exercise in mental stimulation. New Poser goodies: This forum is a great place to learn about the release of new goodies (ie - Sams3d freebies/products) that might not be found on the Rendy site.

For Information/Education mainly, I learn loads just by reading the forums, and usually someone else asks the question that I was just about to ask anyway, so I can keep my ignornace to myself ;-).

I like to learn new techniques...and this is a great place when people say, "look what I figured out" and share their discovery. And I do like the quick response when I've gotten myself into a hole and have to cry, "help." Most questions get answered with amazing speed. Once in awhile I actually know the answer to a question, and that allows me to give back a tiny bit of what the community has given to me, and that makes me feel good too. I like seeing what's new out there. I can't afford to buy everything. I don't have the time to try everything. But I can enjoy what other people do. Because I don't make my way to the galleries often enough, I appreciate when people post their work here, or provide a link that says, "here's a graphic you shouldn't miss." I have to admit I rather enjoy some of the odd detours threads take. People have fascinating minds. They reveal themselves in the different interpretations they take on questions or responses. I'm embarressed that I get drawn into arguments. I've got a very hot temper and impulse takes over for good sense now and again. But maybe this is a good place to learn better manners. I'm working on it, anyway (even though it may not be obvious). The problem is that when something goes against my principles, it's hard for me to let it go even though I know few people have any interest in any opinion except their own. I have noticed I've gotten more conservative in my tastes over the past year...opposite of what one would expect but that's the result of being yelled at. I don't know if that's good or bad. I'm considering that value neutral. There are people I have met here that I wouldn't have a chance to meet in my real world. I'm thinking that's the best part of of the forums.

To paraphrase Compiler... 75% : to learn new techniques about Poser. This forum greatly helped me going up in the steep poser5 learning curve. Plus, many of the cool discoveries of Poser are uncovered here. 20% : to learn were I can get some cool stuff I don't yet have. And to find more cool stuff, which ends up leading me to buy more poser stuff I wont have time to learn or use.. LOL! 5% : Because I SHOULD be learning poser myself, but it's just so DAMNED easy to come here, and have people spoon feed me! ;) Most of the people here go FAR above and beyond assisting poser noobs like myself. To everyone who's helped me, more thanks then I can ever repay!

Way too many people take way too many things way too seriously.

for me: to learn

xoconostle ( ) posted Fri, 26 December 2003 at 1:23 PM

I enjoy almost everything this forum has to offer. The learning aspect is very valuable, but there have also been times when it was gratifying to be able to help someone with something, which I guess is the flip side of the learning equation. There are some aspects, e.g. the "look at my cute render" postings, which I enjoy sometimes, and which annoy at other times. I suppose my biggest pet peeve about this forum is that sometimes people post speculation as if it were fact. Better to research your assertion first, if you aren't really sure. Flames as entertainment? A guilty pleasure when one is in the mood for it, but I've gotta say, this forum has NOTHING on the OT, Copyright Law, or Community Center forums when they get heated. Mostly I'm here because Poser has been a source of tremendous pleasure and a venue for creative expression for me. The fact that that's true for you, too, is reason enough for us to create community among ourselves IMO. In spite of our crimes of passion, I like us.

leather-guy ( ) posted Fri, 26 December 2003 at 1:43 PM

I enjoy discussions relating to the uses and pleasures of Poser and other softwares here, as well as the "art" produced. I find the rants and debates about personal positions on "issues" and personalities annoying and disruptive - I thought the deceased C&D, and later the OT forums were created for such things. ...Just my 2 cents worth.

For me, it's Dr. Geep's tuts, finding about new sites, and learning all sorts of interesting Poser things! So long as folks don't get nasty with each other, I don't mind the occasional scrap or soap opera - it's completely normal when you've got a large group of folks with different opinions. You know, like a family!

Badco ( ) posted Fri, 26 December 2003 at 3:06 PM

I enjoy the rants and debates about personal positions on "issues" and personalities ! I actually come here to get a laugh. You people crack me up ! If I want to learn somthing, then I go to one of the other Poser forums on the www.

bip77 ( ) posted Fri, 26 December 2003 at 3:29 PM

I found Renderosity while searching for free stuff. Later I came (and still do) to learn. (Special thanks & greetings to Dr. Geep!) But recently I also found it very interesting to study people and their different behaviour. Best seen in copyright discussions. ;-) But I'm more part of the 'watching' majority than the 'active' minority. Would like to post more myself, but English is not my native language - so it takes so long to think about how to write it that the thread has moved on or someone else has posted my thoughts.

pokeydots ( ) posted Fri, 26 December 2003 at 4:25 PM

What I am not here for.... Not here for flame wars, not here to belittle people or call names, not here to judge people. What I am here for, to see what my friends are up to, to learn, to see what new poser items people have discovered, to see the art they create, with the new discovery, as I for one don't look at the gallerys very often so I look here, then in the product showcase forum. And What I miss in here is the people showing their upcoming products, renders and all, as for me, it is all poser related, and if it looks like something I'm not interested in, I skip it and go on to the next post. It seems easier to have it all here and just skip by whatever post don't interest me :) So to sum it up, I am here for friends and Poser :)

Ok, here I am. First for the question: 1) I come here to learn, to find out how Poser and Art related to Poser works. 2) I used to come here to see what characters are in the works, but now that's in another forum. Hey, things change, and they always will. I have no opinion on how someone organizes his or her site. (One thing my employers have always commented positive about me is my 'ability to adapt to changes') 3) I enjoy many of the 'cute' posts, ones that arent 'my speed' I just pass by (I'm sure they appeal to someone else so I have no feeling either way - this community is supposed to be for everyone not just "me") Now for my comment in the previous thread: I do apologize if I offended anyone (which apparently I did). The age-old saying "No Whiners Allowed" is simply a very common saying among many athletic groups. My self being rather athletic (skydive, snow ski, surfing, mountain biking, etc) it's just a saying that pops into my mind a lot lately when I see many flame threads aimed at the way someone administers their site or their own affairs. My statement was certainly out of line and I do apologize to anyone who took it personally. Especially now that PheonixRising has posted it's actual meaning I now see it was totally inappropriate. Just another reason I do try Not to post replies in such threads as we are all so different who come here and not all of our beliefs and ways are understood by one another or seen in the same 'light'. Having been 'flamed upon' and ridiculed myself for my spelling, vocabulary, my opinions on matters, my modeling ability (rather lack of), my art ability (or rather lack of) I do know what its like to have someone post negative comments. For this reason alone I should have known Not to click that Post Reply button. I cannot take back what I said (no one can change what has already been done) but I can give my promise that I will refrain from such comments in the future. I am sorry.

To this particular forum, here at Renderosity:

  1. As others have indicated, to learn.

  2. For entertainment.

  3. To hone my debating skills, and to defend what I think is right. However, TRW doesn't always allow time for me to do an adequate job of this. I don't have 5-6 hours a day free to do nothing but type.

  4. To meet interesting people: individuals that I would never meet otherwise.

  5. To get ideas. Both for art and for various other purposes.

  6. To BUY THINGS.

  7. To get free items.

  8. It beats staring at a TV set all night.

Many times when I come in here, I find out things about Poser that I didn't know, even though I've been using it since Poser 2 (wow, how many years is that?). I'm far from an expert and it's always really exciting to read a thread where someone divulges something I didn't know about the program. So, I guess I could say it's learning more about it. I also come in here occasionally to ask a question, because I know there's someone out there with an answer. Melanie

As someone who is new to the forum, and to Poser, I'd have to say for me:

  1. I come here in the hopes of figuring out how to use the program (Poser5). As for me understanding the manual, well, as far as I'm concerned it could be written in Greek. I pretty much gave up on it, so I don't even open the program much. (I hope to change this with course in January)

  2. I come here to see what others are doing, and hope to be able to use it. (See answer #1)

  3. I come here to laugh at some of the replies, and also to shake my head sometimes at other replies.

So many people have wonderful imaginations and come out with absolutely stunning stuff. I hope one day to be even half as good. :)
