Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 27 5:12 pm)
"I may just buy the computer and shelve XP for W98se." Don't do it! Buy the computer. Keep XP. It's waaaaay better than W98se. I speak as a recent diehard W98se'er converted to XP. Currently using home, but putting together a new box with XP Pro the wife has sprung for over Christmas - gotta love that woman!!!! I'm using ProPack still - never even installed P5 yet! It had too many issues early on, still very happy with PP. XP is worth it just for the memory management, IMHO! Just my 4 cents (inflation?) since you asked. Larry F
XP is much better than 98, especially for Poser. You can switch off the toytown interface if it annoys you.
Coppula eam se non posit acceptera jocularum.
AFAIK, Pro has some extra networking stuff, but all else is pretty much the same. Greyskin - get more RAM. It really does help.

Ditto SamTherapy. Poser definitely likes XP better than 98; increasing RAM cures many problems.

There were a lot of XP-specific issues addressed in a Poser Technical Forum thread: NTFS "features" locking out the Poser folders? by hogwarden on 4/21/02 Here's an excerpt of a post I made in that thread with info on how to customize and tweak an XP installation for smoother operation. ************************************** I LOVE XP's stability, and many of it's features, but MS in their ongoing drive to eliminate those pesky annoying choices that make for unnecessary Support calls crippled or eliminated most of the customization options I wanted/needed/was used to, or just made access to them so hard to find they might as well be gone. So I invested considerable time researching what options were available and where/how to access. Some require external utilities to reach, others (like obliterating the MS Messenger nags and de-installing it entirely) required obscure command-line options. Turning off 50 or 60 of the useless background "Services" that MS felt should be on all the time by default freed up a lot of resources as well. I'm really happy with XP and how I've got it set up right now, but it took some work before I was comfortable with it, and confident it was fully on my team. Some of the sites I found usefull; http://www.tweaktown.com/document.php?dType=guide&dId=120&dPage=1 http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/using/tips/default.asp http://www.tweakxp.com/tweakxp/default.asp http://members.aol.com/axcel216/ http://support.microsoft.com/newsgroups/default.aspx?ICP=GSS3&NewsGroup=microsoft.public.windowsxp.general&SLCID=US&scrollnews=m10s2s5 http://www.annoyances.org/ http://www.tipsdr.com/ Utilities I found invaluable; TweakXP Xteq's Xsetup CustomizerXP (I also bought 6 books on XP, but I can't really recommend any, as I found the authors all had basic confusions as to what was XP Home and what was XP PRo, and appeared to have used the Beta versions instead of the finals.) I hope some of this is helpfull.
The main attraction of XP Pro versus XP Home is support for dual processors. Pro has more networking and security. Pro comes with the remote access utility. Other than that, there's really no difference other than double the price. Unless you have a multi-processor motherboard....or plan on setting up a network with more than ten machines (Pro isn't limited to the ten machines Home is)....or are just anal rententive when it comes to securing your PC....Home should be just fine for you. Final note.....security can be a good thing but can also be a bad thing...the more security you got....the more likely the chance of securing yourself right out of your own system.

I'm finally upgrading my PC. Anything I find prebuilt comes with windows XP. 1. Is there any issues using Poser 4 on XP? 2. Is there any issues if I upgrade to P5 with XP? 3. Recomended memory size? I know that issues sometimes are machine/user specific, but I'm looking for trends in issues that people have had. I may just buy the computer and shelve XP for W98se.
