karen1573, thank you for the links! So it's a bug inherent to P4, hmmm. I can't understand why I've never encountered it before, but I have several ideas for working around it, now. fis13, I've DL'd memturbo, thank you for the recommendation. I have used other apps for this in the past (MemMax and RAMbooster,) but trying another one can't hurt. I'll try to report back here if I can get the darn message to stop popping up.
The CL fix worked for me on two computers. This one: Poser 4 Poser can't render high resolution images. Error appears "Insufficient disk space to render" After some intense investigation we believe we have a work around. It turns out that Windows NT 4, 2000 and Windows XP must be using some space for the pagefile.sys file on the same partition that Poser is installed, to render large images. The pagefile.sys is the virtual memory or temp space for Windows. An approximate minimum would 10 MB. This amount might have to be increased for more complex scenes and animations. The maximum should be 10 MB or greater. To modify the Virtual Memory: Windows NT 4 = Right Click my computer. Click the performance tab. Click change. Click the drive Poser is installed on. Enter 10 in the Initial size field. Enter 10 or more in the maximum size field. Click set. Click OK. Click OK. Click OK. You may have to restart the System. Windows 2000 = Right click My computer. Select the Advanced tab. Click Performance option. Click Change. Select the drive Poser is installed on. Enter 10 in the Initial size field. Enter 10 or more in the maximum size field. Click set. Click OK. Click OK. Click OK. You may have to restart the System. Windows XP = Click Start. Right Click My Computer in the menu. Select Properties. Select the Advanced tab. Click Settings, next to Performance. Select the advanced tab. Click Change. Select the drive Poser is installed on. Click the Custom size button. Enter 10 in the Initial size field. Enter 10 or more in the maximum size field. Click set. Click OK. Click OK. Click OK. You may have to restart the System. Poser will now be able to render up to its maximum size of 4090 pixels x 4090 pixels @ any resolution * * * Other than that-- Poser seems to want an ungodly amount of swap space on your disk so if you get under 3Gs you may have probs. Emily
"Poser will now be able to render up to its maximum size of 4090 pixels x 4090 pixels @ any resolution" For win98/SE I can say that Poser 5 cannot handle HIgh res textures or renders. I have over 600meg in memory. I tried letting windows set the Virtual Memeory and then I tried setting it myself. Nope. I try to like poser but my other programs like TrueSpace/3DSMAX and more handle much higher polygon rates and very large textures with ease . The problem with Poser is that its interface is pretty. All that prettiness is eating up too much memory. PeteJ
Emily, WOW, thanks for such a thorough response. I'm sure it will help others, too. Well, the problem didn't pop up again. I think the reason it did before is that I'd been surfing the net, running several apps, all kinds of stuff prior to opening Poser. I did increase my virtual memory settings a bit more, but they were already very high, divided between two drives. After rebooting, I shut down unnecessary processes (e.g. the stuff that iTunes loads at startup,) ran MemTurbo as fis13 had suggested, and was able to complete my renders with no problem. Apparently, this really was a memory issue, although I think it's clearly more a matter of how Poser manages (mismanages?) memory than not necessarily having enough RAM and virtual RAM available.
Has a been a week since someone asked this question? Wow, how time flies. Here are (once again) the usual answers (that can be found by hitting the rarely used "Search Forum" link):

Hello, I'm working diligently on a deadline in P4/PP today, and keep getting this error message. Actually, I have over 65 gigs of free space on my HD, plenty of virtual memory allotted, etc. etc. In other words, no legitimate reason for this error to appear that I can determine. Furthermore, it's never happened to me before, even when I was rendering at much higher resolutions. (This series of renders are being done at 1200x1200 ... hardly gigantic.) I suppose I could downsize and see what happens, but I'm wondering if anyone else out there knows of a fix for this error, or if it's actually caused by something other than what the message box indicates? Many thanks for any help you can offer. I'm just about ready to throw a brick at the monitor right now. :-)
