Subject: What are the best Lights for creating character textures?

lululee ( ) posted Sun, 04 January 2004 at 10:37 AM · edited Tue, 07 January 2025 at 12:00 AM

Can anyone tell me what the best lights are to create textures with. cheerio lululee

geep ( ) posted Sun, 04 January 2004 at 10:40 AM

Um, I don't think you can create textures with lights ... I, um, er, believe you need some sort of "paint" program. I could be wrong here ... just guessing, ya know. ;=] cheers, dr geep ;=]

Geep, I'm guessing that lululee wants to photograph human bodies to make her own textures, and therefore, wants to know how to light them. I won't post a long explanation until I get confirmation, but that's the only thing I can think of. mac

Dah! Too much party last night. I have the photographs, I am creating a phtotrealistic texture so I want to light it in Poser so I can see things properly to line up seams etc. cheerio lululee

I can recommend Traveler's Softlights which you can get free from Runtime DNA. I'm seriously considering making Softlights - Flesh 01 into my default Poser lighting setup. It seems to bring out the best in any texture; although you may prefer a white set for objective viewing of a texture. The fleshtone sets are the lighting equivalent of rose tinted glasses. :-)

Thanks so much EnglishBob. I'm off to get the lights. cheerio lululee

White lights, white. Please please please use white lights.
I like to use a soft global set of white lights.

The "Neutral-Bright" or "!True Globals" Complex Global Lights from the first PC Complex Global Light Set I think is the best. It is uniform and true. I think many textures come out too pale because the lights are too dark. The Complex Global Lights preserve saturation where some bright light sets desaturate as the lights get brighter. I beleive this is also why many texture packs have orange creases, hair, and details under other lighting. I have tested textures in Poser with these and find the color range to be consistant with the actual map in Photoshop. Just my recommendation.

Attached Link: Light section

I know sometimes a category will seem empty when you first click on it. The sub-category listings are bugged to display a false "sampling" of random store products while you are prompted to choose a sub-category. The Lighting category is a sub-set of Scenes. After mentioning it for over 6 months to the same people, it is sad the sub-categories in the PC are still bugged. Here is the link

Direct Link to Daz Global Lighting Pack 1. Great set of lights. I also recommend the RuntimeDNA free light sets. lots of different moods and setings to play with and see how your texture looks under different cercomstances.

Render with shadows sometimes too when testing. It will show you where pale areas might turn grey if they are too light.

When I use light I keep it short and simple - The way to use light in poser is the same way you use lights in real life. Two is all you will probably need (most proffessional photograhers use one subject light and on fill-in. In poser (any version) change the shadow mapping to around 0.150 and the map size to 1024 change the red channel to fit your preferences (I normally look for between 3- 5% more than the green or blue channel) this will give a soft early to mid morning light that is good for flesh tones. Having just two light mean that your rendering tends to be quicker in P4 - no difference in firefly if you check RayTrace on the lights instead of shadow maps. I've used this mapping professionally for a number of years.

lululee: PoserPros has a set of free testing lights specifically to detect seams when creating textures. They are really, really good :). Laurie
