Subject: Macintosh OS X newbie needs help

zenreaper ( ) posted Mon, 05 January 2004 at 11:30 AM · edited Wed, 08 January 2025 at 2:50 PM

Okay, I'm an old school PC kinda guy, with a bright new shiny G4 Powerbook and Poser for OSX, and I've run into some installation oddities. Most of the poser stuff I have is in zip files that unpack to a Runtime folder. When I move these folders to my poser 5 installation, OS X completely trashes the old folder and replaces it with the one, rather than overwriting/merging the two the way my goold old PC did. Is there any way around this in OS X, or will I need to use an application like MacInstaller or MacConvertor? Also, is there any way get all of my old Daz installers to work on OS X? Thanks ahead of time!!

I don't have Poser 5 for OS X only 4 running on OS 9. You'd probably get more help if you posted in the mac forum - link in sidebar or up top.

Attached Link: http://www.soft-rabbit.com/

Daz sells their Mac products in sit files not zip. Contact them and see if you can get replacements. The sit files will install everything in the right places. However, this is a long term solution in the event you have to rebuild your drive from scratch, etc.

For a quicker fix and for everyday use you'll need Poser Macinstaller 1.0.6 from soft-rabbit.com. The catch is that Macinstaller only runs in OS 9. With luck OS 9 is came installed on your computer.

While you're at soft-rabbit, download Maconverter. You'll need to convert pc files to Mac format in order for Macinstaller to recognize them.

Both programs are simple to use (drag-and-drop) and come with manuals to explain optional features. You should be up and going in just a few minutes.

Good luck.

As far as replacing the runtime you simply have to open the folders and put them in the respective areas. Hope all this helps some.

Thanks so much everyone. Didn't even realize there was a Mac forum, I',m sure I'll be psoting there a lot in the future. Now if I can only figure out why subdirectories in my Downloads runtime aren't working. I spent so much time organising my poses and props into categories, but it seems that I can only see files in subdirectories of libraries (like pose/vicki poses/standing) if they're in the main runtime.

Re hidden subdirectories: Yes, I found out that too, subdirectories only work in the main runtime in P5 on the mac :(

1.- Congrats on getting a PowerBook.
2.- Do you mean that you are moving the entire series of nested folders (Runtime>Libraries>Characters>etc) into Runtime? IF SO, don't. Instead, move the contents of the folders to the appropriate locations, creating new folders as necessary. Use MacInstaller if you want it automated. See Soft-Rabbit.com for deets.
3.- DAZ3D uses .sit files for Mac products, which contain an installer that is ONLY OS 9 (Classic) compatible. To use them you MUST have OS 9 installed. If you are booted in OSX, Classic will start immediately to enable the installers (per default, I believe)
4.- IMPORTANT- Avoid using the " / " (forward slash) character in folder names. The contents will not be recognized. Something about UNIX(?)

Anything else?

Only 2 ways to do it... either manually, placing all the sub folders in the correct runtime subfolders. Or.. Your powerbook should have Classic OS 9 installed unless you've trashed it or reformatted the drive. If you have it Mac installer is the answer it automatic and you can customize as well. Welcome to Macintosh I know it's quite different from The pc you had but once you get used to using it your gonna love it!

Don't use both Macinstaller and manual placementyou'll just get confused. Use one or the other. Some DAZ instalers run under OSX, some under OS 9. The OSX installers seem to want to put the runtime folder on the root of your system drive. DO NOT move this runtime into your Poser folder. I find it helps to use list view, open the Poser runtime folder next to the new runtime folder, and drag and drop the files into the Poser runtime WORKING FROM THE DEEPEST LEVEL UP. eg. runtime/poses/v3headstand.pz3move the v3headstand file ONLY into the pose file in the poser runtime. Welcome to the few, the proud, the brave, the undersupported by software developersthe Mac users. Just remember that it only looks as confusing as Windows.... Hey, Ghost of Macbeth! Nice to see a familiar face! :D

Also, Macworld starts this week. :) I got a notice that the folks at Eovia are going to unveil something nifty regarding Poser 5 and Cararra 3. I always unzip to a separate folder and look over the readme. Then I use MacConverter and MacInstaller to place things in the areas I have selected for them. Even with DAZ products I'll try to do my own installation. I've heard that Vicki3 snarls things up, so if I ever get the third generation characters I'll have to let them install where they want to. :grumble: Part of the reason you should monitor the installation is that other packages may call upon certain basic textures or whatever to work. After the third Vicki-based character called out for the lash transparency, I got tired of hunting down where DAZ had hidden it... and unpacked the millenium people myself. Carolly

Actually you can collapse the INJ Pose folders on the Version 3 figures now. Just don't move the Daz folder...

Thanks everyone! Yup, seems unaminous, no sub-directories except in the main runtime. Oh well, at least i have them there ;) Macinstaller and Convertor are working nice so far under Classic, and I'm just going to unpack all of my old Daz stuff to a folder on my PC, burn to a disk, then port 'em over to my powerbook.
