I have a dual boot machine for Windows 98 and XP. Using Microsoft Explorer on XP I can access WWW.DAZ3D.COM, but on 98, Microsoft Explorer cannot find the page. All other sites seem OK, just DAZ's seems affected. I access the internet over an ADSL modem which is on an ethernet network and a laptop running W98, Microsoft Explorer has no problems accessesing the DAZ web site. I'm baffled, anyone any ideas?

Sounds like you have your security setting not to allow access to Daz3D. Check your firewall settings and/or check your provacy setting in IE. PeteJ

My firewall is built into the ADSL modem which is used by the W98 machine that does have access, so it is not that. I can't see anything in my Internet Security settings that would affect DAZ3d- any clues as to what I'm looking for?

Have you tried going into Tools>Internet Options and go to Security settings and Restore Defaults?

Have you tried just giving up on W98? Come on, we're approaching 9 years! NINE YEARS! The software is OLD! Use XP and forget about W98. On a related note, whenever I try to access the Free Stuff here, using DOS, I can't see the images. Can anyone help? It's DOS 5.0 using a command-line interface. Help! Oh, and don't tell me to update to them fancy Windows thing. If DOS is good enough to type a letter in, it's good enough to use all the time. I ain't gots the $150 to give to the evil empire that is Microsoft. I'd rather spend thousands at DAZ and complain that their stuff don't work on my Windows 95 computer!

Sure, ok, fine. I'll upgrade to XP. Oh, but wait, who's gonna spend $5000 to buy me a new wide carriage printer? Cuz the one I have will NOT work with XP and there are NO plans to make new drivers for it and since my clients INSIST that I be able to print 11 x 17 and 16 x 20 then I really can't use a "normal" printer and I darn sure can't afford 5 grand to replace a printer that is working perfectly well under w98. I have a whole bunch of perfectly good hardware that doesn't work with Windows XP, so that's why I have a dual boot system. Ye old laptop that runs Windows 98 doesn't have enough memory to run XP, but it is good enough for the kids, listening to the radio on-line and participating in forums- which is what I'm doing now on it. Thank you Karen1573, did you know you look remarkably like Karen1572 (would you be by chance related?), I'll try that when the wife has finished her word processing. My wife is also incompatable with Windows XP and has to use Windows 98.

Hmm Kate, maybe you should talk to the people that build the printer? Not supporting a newer OS but supporting an outdated OS that isn't even supported by their creators anymore is a bit strange I would think. Not that I think that M$ is a great company or what.

Thought about that, Puntomaus, but alas, the wide carriage isn't a very popular format so they've discontinue manufacture for use with ANY OS. So far, of the other printer makers out there there are maybe two that make the wide carriage and the lowest price I can find on one of those is the 5k I mentioned. I've got a perfectly good copy of XP sitting here on my desk that will never get installed (it was a christmas gift) because it conflicts with too many things that I use on a daily basis and because I don't like the "gotta get a new code" deal if I upgrade too much hardware at once. (And it takes at least 6 installs before any MS OS stabilizes on my system - dunno why, that's just how it happens). Soooo...I'll muddle along with 98. But I still miss my win95. New and improved? JohnRender, go back and take fourth grade math again,it's obvious that you didn't make it the first time. XP isn't an operating system that anyone would want as their only one, I have found very little that will run reliably under xp, and most of them run just fine on 95 or 98. There are exceptions to any version of wincrash, but that's what I keep the Linux box for. If I'm going to do what I know is going to be a long (10 to 18 hour) render, the files are transfered to the linux box, it hasn't crashed on me yet. (XP crashes with a word processor????!!!!)

I am still running Win98SE with very few problems, the fact it has been around so long and is stable says something about the new stuff that MS puts out. The hackers and such have already had their challenge with Win98 and more or less just leave it alone now. I may update someday to Win 2K, but don't care to have my OS be the prime spyware program on my system at this point...so nix on XP. Next step from Win 2K would be Lindows.

I have this same problem under ME on my laptop. I spent two days on the phone with my ISP and three hours on the phone with Daz, left messages on various newsgroups and still haven't got an answer to this one. It's been about 10 weeks now, so I just quit connecting with my laptop when I want to view the Daz site. Not a fix, but until I find one (other than reinstalling everything on my laptop) seems the best I can do. BTW...running ME on both machines and they have the same network and internet configurations...go figure.

I'm curious what browser and version people experiencing problems are using. Using 98 without any upgrades/patches or browser updates might be the problem. With IE 5 I can't access Daz's forum or store, Renderosity's chat and some other secure sites. I don't like IE in the first place, and my Netscape was old, so I went to mozilla.org and downloaded the latest version of Mozilla. No more problems. I suppose getting IE 5.5 or above (current is 6?) would also achieve the same results. Can't hurt to try, post results back here if you would.

I have a Win95 machine, a Win 98 machine, A dual boot Win ME/Linux Mandrake machine, an XP Home machine and an XP Pro machine. XP Pro is the best and most stable for networking and just about anything else IMHO. I've had my XP Pro for nearly 3 years. During that time, I've had only two instances of the equivalent to the "blue screen of death" (XP simply reboots). Program crashes are not the fault of the OS, but errant programming behavior in program software. In XP Pro, when a program does crash, it doesn't affect the OS. Consequently you don't have to reboot for your machine for it to run properly. It's much like Linux in that respect. In fact, you can run XP non-stop without rebooting forever I think. I turn off my computer when I'm away for an extended period, but otherwise it's on all the time......and I use it every single day. I can multi-task in Poser 5, PsP, Vue, be on-line, etc. I've never had to reboot because of memory issues as was almost a daily necessity with the 9x machines. I've run this machine non-stop for a month without rebooting once. Try that with any 9x OS. It's a completely different Kernel....based on Windows 2000. The only OS that is as good as XP Pro is Linux. Period. The only problem with any flavor of XP is that it won't run some of the older hardware and software. That's one of the reasons I still have W98, 95, etc. because my older machines/equipment won't run XP. But Linux can't run a lot of old hardware or most any PC software for that matter.....which is why I never switched to Linux. I've never had a Mac, so I have no opinion on them. The worst OS ever made: Windows ME (a real piece of crap)

Oh christ, all this anti-Win/XP "evil-empire" crap. Hey, have any of you ever used Windows Update? For your information its quite capable of checking a recording every little detail about what is on your system.Let that massage your paranoia. And yet, MS only uses it to check if you need to update. As far as XP stability, you asking too much if you expect XP to run fine on a system that came with Win98/SE on it hence the problems. Sure it could work fine. But not on all systems originally containing Win988. Someone actually missed Win95? Win98 is indeed very much improved. At last check The lates service release of XP greatly improves it. I have yet to read major bad stuff about it. As far as the pain full "new code required" thing. Yeah that sucks. But rather than be pissed at MS why don't you direct your irritation where it belongs. THe piracy groups and thier downloaders. PeteJ

Well back to my topic! I managed to solve it. I ran winipcfg, selected NDIS 4.0 Driver and clicked on renew all. This allocated me a new IP address which works for the DAZ 3D site. I have no idea why the old address didn't work!

Well, glad you got yours fixed smiller.:) Guess I'm still left with the puzzle, the techs took me through what fixed yours with no luck for me. As to browsers, I have fully updated versions of IE and Netscape. I keep all my software updated as it keeps down problems. Quite honestly, I've chalked this one up as one of life's little mysteries, as long as it doesn't become epidemic. Besides, everyone needs a little mystery to keep things interesting.:)

Possibly you've got something weird in your Hosts file? I don't know much about it other than having mucked around with it once in an attempt to block certain kinds of advertisting (but it ended up being more trouble than it was worth). Do a Google search for "windows hosts file" and see what you turn up. Can't hurt. :) bonni

Since it has not been mentioned. Have you got the latest Flash plugin installed? I reformatted a while ago and could not connect to Daz with XP Home and thought it was something with the OS or IE, turned out I had not installed all the plugin goodies that I needed and I had turned ON the disable message that lets me know that a site required a plugin so I didn't know even though IE wanted to tell me what it needed, I had turned that option off accidently. Just a thought.
