Subject: Thought someone would have mentioned this already....

There's a car in the marketplace. It's a nice looking model. But the price is $110. Is that really the price? And who bought one?

That would be cheap if it were on TurboSquid. ;)

Its not a poser prop it's in lightwave format. Lightwave has one of the best modelors around. I dont know why any lightwave user would $$$pay$$$ that much for a LWO that he can model himself if he just reads his manual. :-)

In my defense, it wasn't all that obvious from the thumbnail what format it was in. But you are right, it is Lightwave. I assure you with complete confidence that even with Lightwave and a manual, I couldn't model that car. Which is why people pay for what they cannot do. And sometimes for what they can do. But that's a different thread.

It's more than I would be willing to pay. The price/value ratio is negative.

More than I'd pay too, but it might be worth that to someone out there. Maybe?

soulhuntre ( ) posted Mon, 05 January 2004 at 9:45 PM

I've paid more than that for models. When your working on an item for a client and a deadline it makes perfect sense to pay for the mesh you need. If that model saved me 3 hours time it would have more than paid for itself in both my opinion and that of my clients. Whether that specific model is worth it isn't somehting I am commenting on, just the price :)

If you have a week to do a book cover or promotional poster or whatever, you immediately check to see what can be purchased and used... rather than spend all that modeling time on some prop instead of the main character. For commercial purposes, this model is very reasonably priced. Jobs involve deadlines and hard choices. If you only have so many hours to spend, how to wisely use those hours to get the best image possible? What is your time worth? Carolly

Well......I am considering the model's price from the standpoint of a hobby. If I had clients to please, things might appear in a different light. As matters stand, there are simply too many excellent automobile models for Poser. At good prices. I'd say that my personal price/value ratio for a good vehicle model max'es out at around $30 to $35. More than that, it's not worth it to me.

I must have 40-50 cars that I've picked up for free over the years and several more that were less than $20. Have to admit that I'll rarely go over $20 for anything except Daz millennium figures and even that makes me groan. It's simply too easy to find versions of almost anything you'd want for Poser for less than $20 if you look hard enough.

It's unusual that someone put a model that price in this marketplace. It's not that the model is or is not worth it. It's that this isn't the usual venue for one that price; it's significantly out of line even with the other lightwave models here. My initial thought is that he didn't do his market research very well. The people who come here usually don't spend that kind of money. But hey, if it works for the guy, more power to him.

pakled ( ) posted Tue, 06 January 2004 at 1:44 PM

at that price, he only has to sell one..;)

Anatolyi (sp) sells models at even higher prices. That iron horse was $200. It would be easier to get that price at TurboSquid or Gamasutra. If a modeler's time is $50/hr and it takes a week to model a human and even longer for a vessel or building, then I can see where game companies and such would look for as much generic stuff as they could buy so that their modelers were working on the unique items.
