This was sent out in a newsletter from 3D Commune:

Eovia be will be previewing the Poser Transporter plugin for Carrara Studio 3 and Poser 5 at MacWorld Expo 2004. Poser Transporter is a full-featured plugin to dynamically import animated Poser 5 figures into Carrara Studio 3. It's a much awaited plugin and we're extremely excited about it. If you don't already have an appointment with us at MacWorld and you're going to be attending, please feel free to stop by booth 2538 and see us.

Here's the full press release from Eovia: Eovia Previews the Poser Transporter At Macworld Expo 2004 in San Francisco Press Release #27 For Immediate Release A Full-Featured Bridge Between Poser and Carrara Studio 3 - Eovia Booth # 2538 - San Francisco, California, Macworld Expo January 6, 2004 - Eovia Corporation, developer and publisher of leading 3D software, today announced that the company will be previewing the Poser Transporter (codename), a plug-in for Carrara Studio 3 and Poser 5, at MacWorld Expo 2004. The Poser Transporter is a full-featured plug-in to dynamically import animated Poser 5 figures into Carrara Studio 3. While this preview version will be showcased at Macworld Expo on the Macintosh only, Eovia plans is to release a final version for both the Macintosh and Windows within the end of the first Quarter of 2004. Users of Poser and Carrara Studio 3 will soon be offered with the perfect tool to import and manipulate Poser 5 scenes in Carrara Studio 3, including textures, transparency maps, clothes and animations. The Poser Transporter plug-in brings the best in 3D character animation to the already full-fledged capabilities of Carrara Studio 3, said Antoine Clappier, CEO of Eovia. There are no other 3D products more complementary to each other than Poser and Carrara Studio. Availability The English/International version of the Poser Transporter plug-in is expected to be available for the Mac (OS X) and Windows platforms within the end of Quarter 1 2004. No pricing has been specified so far. The Poser Transporter plug-in will require a valid install of both Carrara Studio 3 and Poser 5. Very exciting news indeed !

Nothing for Poser 4 users? Bummer! And it won't be free? Another bummer!

ShawnDriscoll ( ) posted Tue, 06 January 2004 at 1:01 PM

I was hoping that Service Pack 4 for Poser 5 would included the transporter and Eovia would post the Poser transporter for Carrara 3 as a free download. But if it isn't free, you'd think CuriousLabs would have given the plugin a product name that they could sell in a box? www.shonner.com

First the release of Daz Studio Beta now the announcement from Eovia they plan of releasing a plug-in for Carrara. I think that they are all reacting to the latest buy out of Curious Labs and fear has set in with the follow announcement:

"Curious Labs and e frontier together plan to develop integration between Shade 7 and the future releases of Poser. This, as well as many of the plug-in projects in development will increase the power and functionality of Poser for the 3D artist."

I figure that if they are going to make a big deal about the Poser/Carrara transporter at the Macworld Expo, they should at have a name for the thing already. I'm hoping it'll be a long ways still before the Shade guys re-vamp Poser 6. If not, we may all be downloading the Poser/Carrara transporter as-is, a final release beta. www.shonner.com

What puzzles me is why no one has come up with a rival to Poser? The enthusiast market's crying out for a viable alternative.

Daz is trying that right now with their DAZ|Studio which looks promissing although it is still an alpha version.

I've got the DAZ|Studio beta but haven't had a chance to play with it. I think that it only imports and tweaks existing Poser 4 models (someone tell me if I'm wrong). I was thinking more of total character creation / manipulation / rendering package. Anyone had any experience with Carrara and FXR's Creature Creations software?

Mark

yaaaaaaaaaaay!!!!! this is GREAT news!

I had the chance to swing by the booth at Macworld in San francisco and talk to the nice people of Eovia. The plug-in isn't completely finished (the Windows versus is a little ahead of the Mac version) but I got a chance to see an import of an animation from the Mac Poser 5 to Carrara 3. I can hardly wait to render animation that way. My impression is that this is not a primary project for Eovia but a bit more of a labor of love and so there hasn't been any real thought about how to package it as a product yet if it is even released as a product and not as a free download. My guess is that the announcement had more to do with reminding Mac people that they hadn't been forgotten as an audience aand would retain product parity.

BigGreenFurryThing ( ) posted Thu, 08 January 2004 at 2:39 AM

I e-mailed Eovia about Poser import functionality in back in July and they were working on it then. The fact that they've announced it is great news. The Power Pack and Vector Style plug ins are wonderful so there's hope for the Poser product. Pity if this isn't a "primary project" 'cos if they get it right, it can only increase demand for Carrara. Waiting for Poser import is torture.....

Cheers,
Mark
