THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Bryce 4.1 Patch

Softsnow ( ) posted Fri, 01 September 2000 at 11:23 AM · edited Thu, 14 November 2024 at 3:20 PM

Anybody build anything with the new patch from Corel yet? Just curious what the new tweaks look like... (downloading my patch now)

abcarter ( ) posted Fri, 01 September 2000 at 1:40 PM

I downloaded the patch but wasn't able to install it. The program said it couldn't detect the presence of Bryce. The Corel web page only says to reinstall Bryce if there are any problems, which I can't do at the moment. Anybody else having problems?

Softsnow ( ) posted Fri, 01 September 2000 at 2:17 PM

mine installed fine... along with the RealMovie export fix for the PC...

DigitalArtist ( ) posted Fri, 01 September 2000 at 2:17 PM

They work great on my PC. No problems whatsoever. The interface is a tad darker. But the new Effect in SkyLab is AWESOME. (Circular clouds, better starfiled control) I havent gotten the materials yet, not sure if I want to - just a hassle to import/delete and such things. New exports are implemtented too. -James Still tweaking

Just got a corel update: here are the tweaks. "The patch includes new mapping modes such as Sinusoidal, World Front, World Side, World Cubic and Object Cubic. New import/export filters are also featured in Bryce 4.1, including X (DirectX 3D), the Microsoft 3D file format used primarily by game designers. The new patch also introduces Custom Starfields, which can be used to represent the stars visible from earth. Until now, starfields in Bryce were only able to be generated randomly"

Softsnow ( ) posted Fri, 01 September 2000 at 3:08 PM

I guess I spoke to soon. Everything works in my new patch -as far as I can tell--except the custom starfields :( and that was what I was looking forward to using the most... guess I'll have to send off a letter to Corel...

DigitalArtist ( ) posted Fri, 01 September 2000 at 5:14 PM

Oh yeah - the constellations don't seem to work......go to Help -> Whats new for commands on this......

casamerica ( ) posted Fri, 01 September 2000 at 5:41 PM

Softsnow, same problem as you have - the so-called "custom starfields" are not working per their instructions in their Readme file. In addition, the interface is quite a bit darker and contrast seems way different than previous version. I think they messed with or messed up their gamma settings. Overall, a very disappointing result ... for me at least. Just one more reason to do more and more of my landscape work with Vue d'esprit I guess. If Vue ever gets the transparency map mess solved (or I ever figure out how Vue is supposed to handle transmaps), I'll do everything in Vue. Till then, I guess I go back to the version of Bryce before this so-called "update."

Hawkfyr ( ) posted Fri, 01 September 2000 at 6:21 PM

Mine installed okay but I' cant seem to get the starfields either. I mentioned the gamma in the first thread , I'm glad I wasn't just going crazy. DigitalArtist > I havent gotten the materials yet, not sure if I want to - just a hassle to import/delete and such things. New exports are implemtented too.< Are these "New" prestets?, or just the new volumetric materials from the Previous update? Hawkfyr

DigitalArtist ( ) posted Fri, 01 September 2000 at 8:00 PM

They said they've 'made adjustments' to the volumetric mats..... but I'm not at all certain if they're new or anything. I've fired off an email to Susan Kitchens for clarification on the starfield matter, as she might know the problem. By the looks of t.....Bryce 5 is gonna be a BIG joke. -DA

DigitalArtist ( ) posted Fri, 01 September 2000 at 8:16 PM

Just got the news from a friend....the constellations DO work.....they just arent that bright......which kinda rules out the whole idea in the first place.

Hawkfyr ( ) posted Fri, 01 September 2000 at 8:21 PM

:( hmmm ... not good news, I'll go get the new .mats and let you know whats up. by all means let us know what AuntiAlias has to say about it. Hawkfyr

casamerica ( ) posted Fri, 01 September 2000 at 11:50 PM

Hawkfyr, no, you're not going crazy. ;) The gamma is definitely messed and it gives the whole screen a garish, almost "Martian" look. Hideous. DigitalArtist, Bryce 5 cannot be much more of a joke than this so-called update. I think, at this point, the best we can hope for is that Corel does tank and someone picks up Bryce from the selling of assets that knows the potential of the program and how to actually "update" it. From this "update," it appears they were simply looking for an excuse to get Corel on your screen instead of MetaCreations. I guess I'll be reloading the original Bryce 4.0 and the pre-Corel updates over the weekend. What a waste of time.

Looks pretty cool ... does it affect the other user materials and stuff when you update the thing? Just was gonna wait a bit to try until I am done witht he few mondo projects I am working on ...

DigitalArtist ( ) posted Sun, 03 September 2000 at 9:57 AM

I havent seen any change in my stuff (not yet anyway). In a recent post Brycetech said she tried and reviewed the update, and 1) the Advanced render options were gone 2) the rendertime compared to 4.01 was 10% slower...other things she found were noticed by everyone at first glance.

Ghostofmacbeth ( ) posted Sun, 03 September 2000 at 1:27 PM

Advanced render options? Such as? ... And 10% slower? Geesh ....

DigitalArtist ( ) posted Sun, 03 September 2000 at 2:03 PM

I meant the advanced preview options Like Sree 3d, Open GL, Direct 3d whoops :)

douglaslamoureaux ( ) posted Sun, 03 September 2000 at 8:10 PM

Don't do what I did: I couldn't get 4.1 to load, and Corel's direction recommended doing a clean load of Bryce 4. I did that without thinking, and I saw all my custom materials and skies get overwritten... Oh well, I can just open all of my old Bryce files and rebuild the library, its just going to be a lot of work. I should have copied the material and sky libraries to a different directory first.

Eric Walters ( ) posted Tue, 05 September 2000 at 8:59 PM

Howdy MacIntosh: I had to Reinstall 4.0, I did it on a different drive-I will keep Meta's 4.01 around for awhile. I was unable to see comets-except when I loaded a Sky I made in 4.01 with comets. Susan Kitchens suggests setting the star intensity to 1000 otherwise the constellations get swamped out. I have not looked at the prerender options OpenGL, Sree, etc yet. I had Poser 4.01 crash before so I am not certain that the Bryce 4.1 glitches I have seen were not carry over from memory corruption that already occured. I have been absent for many months for repetive motion stress relief-but I am back and will report any bugs! Anyone know when the S.Ktichens book is expected? Eric

Hawkfyr ( ) posted Tue, 05 September 2000 at 9:07 PM

Welcome Back Eric, I believe the book is due to be released this month::Fingers crossed:: Please let us know if you also lost your open GL,Sree 3D,etc. options. we're tryin to establish a pattern or see of it just plain "Got lost" in the update. Thanks And again Welcome Back Hawkfyr

Thanks Hawkfyr I will do so! Eric

I have a huge damn complaint!!!! All the poser models I use to import into bryce 4.01 will not load....repeat will not load into 4.1. I' running on a mac g4 9.04 This is a downgrade as far as I'm concerned. And the interface is ugly as hell what the *&^& did they do!!!!!

Eric Walters ( ) posted Mon, 18 September 2000 at 10:43 PM

Uh Scottart I have not had any problems with Poser models-if anything it SEEMS a little faster. What is happening? Eric

Hawkfyr ( ) posted Mon, 18 September 2000 at 10:52 PM

Eric ..are you on a Mac? Hawkfyr

Eric Walters ( ) posted Tue, 19 September 2000 at 1:40 AM

Hawkfyr Yep an Oldfashioned 233 GeeThree running an unupdated OS 9 with a whopping 160 mb of ram. I exported the Zygote dragon from Poser 4.02.1.18 to Bryce 4.1 without any problems. And it was easy to import the texture as well. Eric

wscottart ( ) posted Thu, 21 September 2000 at 9:02 PM

Then tell me how you did it. I am running 9.04 at home on a g4 128mb. At school we run it on g3's 64mb, and I can not load any poser figure except for those that I saved as presets before upgrading. This is fustrating.

Eric Walters ( ) posted Fri, 22 September 2000 at 12:29 AM

Wow. Well I posed the Dragon. Chose export obj, selected all the options EXCEPT export as Morph target. My sluggardly ole G3 whirred and hiccuped for a minute. Then I found the dragon.obj and imported into Bryce 4.1. I then performed the usual operations to import the texture. What version of Poser are you running? I think you might have to update to 4.02.1.1.8 or 4.03 to make it work-unless you already have? I may have to go back and try a few others now and see if I have any problems. I'll get back to you if I do. Eric

I'll get back to you if I do. I wonder if the memory limit is the problem. I cant make Poser 4 work reliably without giving it at least 200 MB of ram-with about 300 Mbytes set in Virtual memory. That is REALLY slow sometimes but otherwise Poser crashes without warning. It may be a memory limitation. Try exporting a really simple model like one of the P2 dudes. But only AFTER closing Poser (if you had been using it already) and reopening. I find it has a memory leak and does not really let go of memory once it uses it. Eric

wscottart ( ) posted Fri, 22 September 2000 at 9:57 PM

My problem is solved someone pointed out to me that I need to check include body part names in polygon groups. This cleared up the import ing into Bryce for me. How fustrating this has been... I apologize for ragging on the upgrade now.
