I purchased the downloadable version of Poser 4.03 direct from Curious Labs. I installed exactly as per instructed. Third party hair renders fine. The PDF doesn't make it clear what default hair textures belong to which Avatar. I have yet to render anything but solid lumps of hair on the default figures. If I set the sliders in render option to anywhere other than zero I get see through bits and pieces. If I set the sliders to zero I get a solid lump. On the "Contents CD" there are texture templates in Tiff format. I installed these just in case I missed something, and these didn't overwrite anything else. Look what I'm getting now!! See picture below. Are the default hair textures meant to look like texture or does one see just a solid lump? This gets more and more bizarre each day. Any advice gratefully received. Leonardis

Stage Two. Got rid of the "Texture Templates" which Poser was obviously pointing to instead of the real textures. Maybe the default hair is meant to look like this but I can't believe it does.

On the left, what I get with any transparency, after rendering (I can't find any transparency maps for default hair). On the right, just the default hair texture enabled, but when it renders it looks like the same lump as the Un-rendered lump. So what's the point of having textures if they still look like lumps. If I do this process exactly the same with 3rd party hair it shows up fine, just like it does in the Authors' screenshots.

Can anyone tell me what I'm missing here please? I've seen screenshots of default figures with default hair (Poser 4) and it does look like hair, if not as good as third party stuff.

In depair!

Poser default hair is meant to look that way, there is no transparency made for them. Kozaburo remapped two of the styles for the p4 man (Male hair 1 and Male hair 5) you can get it at the link. Also check the other great hair styles you might like :)

You can download, for free, much better hair than the default stuff at these links http://www.horae.dti.ne.jp/~kozaburo/dload.html just copy and paste the kozaburo link into your web browser.

Thanks gentlemen. I have a few addon hair packages already but I'll certainly follow up your kind links. What intrigues me is that the default hair really doesn't look any different comparing the textured stuff to the untextured. I didn't realise the default Poser 4 stuff was so primitive. Thanks again for the links. Leonardis

The default poser hair has crappy mapping it is strange swirly lines, some people have made new textures that are better for the default hair, some people have even made transmaps for it.

most of the content that comes with poser 4 is 'throw-away' I think they are basically there to give you a starting point to get used to using the system. I have had Poser for a while and I have never, will never use any of the things/figures that came with it... Best best is to get urself over to www.daz3d.com and get yourself Victoria & Michael, the best ones are the Version '3', but if your just starting out perhaps version 2's would do, or... you could keep an eye on the various PC art mags (Computer Arts for example), they often feature the low res versions of Vicky and Mike on the cover CD's.. You might think it throw-away now, but it was state-of-the-art when Poser 4 came out. I remember when there was no Victoria ...
