I thought those of you with an interest in Poser might like to know that DAZ are allowing everyone to be PC members for a month. That means you can get the DAZ doggie and DAZ Studio for free as well as oodles of things in the PC store for a measlie $1.99 each. All you got to do is go register, more info can be found if you can decifer the mayhem at the DAZ forum at this link. Have fun 8) Catlin

PC members get a 30% off on all DAZ originals, although I'm not sure if the dragon is in that catagory. One thing about the dragon is that it is not in the $1.99 price range, it's nearer $50. They also have the storybook dragon though which is $1.99 but it doesn't have wings. You can check out my picture of the SB dragon at the link. 8) Catlin

Zhann ( ) posted Fri, 23 January 2004 at 12:35 AM

I have the dragon from when they offered it free in the newsletter, if there's one thing I learned about the newsletters from poser sites, it's that they offer free poser stuff you can only get thru the newsletter....and it well worth it to subscribe...

Was that some time ago Zhann?, I've never seen them give away the millenium dragon before. 8)

It was last year sometime or the year before, not sure which but I have the Millinium Dragon from them, and I know it was free, cause I couldn't at that time afford -anything- from DAZ...:) I was going to buy some of the animals, but I found Vistapro Products to be better, especially if you don't have Poser, so I plan on buying from them....they have what they call 'ready pose' models that all you do is import it, texture it and voila, instant animal, and the price can't be beat for what you get. You know I'm always lookin' for a deal when it comes to Poser stuff. Check the link, they ship on CD too (included in the price), so no lost files...

I had considered buying some of those animals a while back, but then I got a PayPal account and DAZ started calling me..............damn money sucker that it is. 8) Catlin

tjohn ( ) posted Fri, 23 January 2004 at 2:25 AM

Yeah, the Millenium Dragon LE was a freebie through the newsletter. That's how I got mine. :^)

Sambucus ( ) posted Fri, 23 January 2004 at 5:39 AM

Thanks for the heads up, catlin. They certainly kept that quiet, didnt they. Grabbed some models but couldnt work out how to get Daz Studio. Any clues appreciated.

Sambucus ( ) posted Fri, 23 January 2004 at 6:08 AM

Ah, just got a newsletter with an announcement about this, so apologies Daz, and I`ve found the Studio download in the Platinum club forum.

pakled ( ) posted Fri, 23 January 2004 at 7:42 AM

I've got the newsletter; they've had a bunch of characters, the Dragon was one of them, but as Zhann says, it was many moons ago. The latest character I remember is Sara; sorta cartoon character. Of course, now they're getting sneaky; a lot of the new 'freebies' are items that only work on 'spendy's'..;) There is a freestuff Archive you can access, PC member or no..I think Sixus had a free dragon in 3d World, Digit, Computer Art or one of those..you could get it through a back issue (was offered with Poser 3, which I'm still scratching my head over), so you could get it that way.

I wish I'd said that.. The Staircase Wit

catlin_mc ( ) posted Fri, 23 January 2004 at 2:37 PM

Sixus1 has a free water dragon and also has a fire dragon for sale at $1.99 because they are making a new dragon which will be released around Feb-Mar and the fire dragon will be no more. If you want the FD you'll have to act quickly 'cos they'll stop selling it on the 26th Jan. They've also got a new human figure freebie called the Behemoth. He's a bit like the Freak in size and looks mean, and if you want him he should be on their site today. 8) Catlin

phenom01 ( ) posted Fri, 23 January 2004 at 3:15 PM

To download the latest Alpha version, after registering, go to the Forum and scroll to Platinum Club and enter Members Only. There is an announcement near the top which contains the download. Also note that the username and password needed to download is in the text of that announcement. While there look at some of the other posts. There are tutorials and links to some archived freebies. catlin_mc ( ) posted Fri, 23 January 2004 at 6:45 PM

Go get Daz Studio, Sara, and the new mil doggie. I've heard there's an archive of all the freebies ever that members can access, I've never been so I'm not sure. 8) Catlin

Zhann ( ) posted Fri, 23 January 2004 at 7:09 PM

Yep, free archive requires signing up for their newsletter. then it takes you to the archive...

shadowdragonlord ( ) posted Fri, 23 January 2004 at 7:58 PM

I'm nearly finished modeling a dragon in Rhino, some of you might have seen it but I'll post the new renders soon, and if anyone wants to help me bone it (glares at Drac!) and host it, I'd be glad to put it in the free stuff section... (kinda OT)

catlin_mc ( ) posted Sat, 24 January 2004 at 5:15 AM

Not OT at all Shadow you can never have enough dragons you know, and the one your making has been looking really good to my eyes for a while now, so I'll be very interested when it does becomes available. 8) Catlin

rickymaveety ( ) posted Sun, 25 January 2004 at 2:40 PM

OK ... so I went to the site and got the DAZ Studio ... but I don't see that it does me any good since I can't pose something and then export it into Bryce. The export is not functional. So, someone tell me why I'd want to purchase a bunch of stuff I can't use in Bryce??

catlin_mc ( ) posted Sun, 25 January 2004 at 3:26 PM

The Daz Studio version at the moment is in alpha phase but by the time it gets to beta it should be able to export. Another point in DS's favour is that the base will be free, and you only have to buy modules for animation, etc if that's what you want. So at the moment it might be of no use to you Ricky but in the long run it could be. 8) Catlin

Peggy_Walters ( ) posted Sun, 25 January 2004 at 3:28 PM

The export function should be working soon. This is still the beta version. Hopefully DAZ will also export to Vue... Peggy

Peggy, what they have for download is the alpha version ... not beta. I gather that if I want to use any of the stuff I purchase at DAZ with my free one month platinum membership, I have to also purchase Poser. Erk. By the way, I hope the zoo was fun and thanks for the dragons.

Peggy_Walters ( ) posted Sun, 25 January 2004 at 4:19 PM

Yes, it is very early in the life cycle of the program. From what I have seen, it looks nice. It imports pz3 files and most Poser content, but if you don't have Poser now, I would not buy anything. My friend said we would just see a few animals and then leave. Haaaa! Five hours later I finally escaped.

Ricky check out the link in my post #8, you don't need poser to use the (poser) models, they come pre-posed, ready for use, the full versions allow you to pose them in other ways thru Poser....

rickymaveety ( ) posted Sun, 25 January 2004 at 7:25 PM

OK ... now I'm confused. As I understand it there are four things involved in using people/animals in 3D ... the model the texture map the pose the morphs I can either use something that is preposed and ready to go, OR I can get Poser and purchase either Poser or DAZ models as well as third party morphs and maps, and have some flexibility with what I can do. In any event, if I want to create my own poses and such, I either have to buy Poser or wait until DAZ has an export feature to do my own poses and export to Bryce. What, if anything, do I have to purchase if I want to create my own texture maps, clothing, and such stuff as that? Also, do I have to purchase grouper and other third party software in order to export from Poser into Bryce? I'm not interested in becoming part of the Poser Porn culture, but I would like to incorporate some organic life (beyond plants) into some of my scenes. I'd also like to do some animal and human based architectural features. Of course, I also intended to do something with Rhino when I got that, and I find I'm still doing the bulk of my modeling in Bryce. So, I may give up on this idea as well, but I hope not, since I think that being able to add some other focus to my scenes will help my work in the long run.

Peggy_Walters ( ) posted Sun, 25 January 2004 at 8:34 PM

Only Vistapro Products uses the ready pose idea. So if you want to create your own poses, then you need Poser or DAZ studio (when it is done). Hopefully the program will be released soon. From what I understand, the base program will be free and "modules" will be available for purchase (advanced rendering, and maybe exporting to other programs). For textures, any paint program is fine. Grouper is free and you don't need anything else to import people from Poser to Bryce.

Zhann ( ) posted Mon, 26 January 2004 at 2:12 AM

For modeling clothes you will need a modeling app that exports obj (Rhino, Amapi, Truespace, Wings3D, etc), to do the textures you will need UVmapper Classic or Pro, or one of the freeware/shareware UV mapping apps. Some of the 'Ready Pose' Vistapro packs also come with the pz2, pz3, rsr and png files so that you can pose the model in Poser if you want more than what's supplied. You just have to check the product info to find if those files are included. I bought the full pack of Elk and it includes the ready pose as well as the other files, so I can use it 'out of the can' so to speak or haul it into Poser and create my own poses.
