Subject: some observations

ockham ( ) posted Fri, 23 January 2004 at 4:11 PM · edited Thu, 09 January 2025 at 8:34 AM

I just took advantage of the new "open to everybody" download. Before I spend any more time with DS in its current alpha condition, can somebody verify these observations? 1. No animation at all. 2. No access to Python. (But it appears from the interface files that DS will make just about all its internals available for scripting!) 3. Weird behavior of cameras in an existing Poser scene. If these observations are true, I'll wait for later improvements before putting any effort into learning DS at this stage.

Animation is not exposed yet. Rob W. posted that Python was causing some problems at this time, so it was removed from the code. D|S will have some form of scripting though it may not end up being Python. What wierd behavior are you seeing w/ cameras?

Okay, thanks. If animation isn't available yet, it's not worth my time. The weirdness was with the Face camera in a pre-existing Poser scene. (In Poser the camera was set at a reasonable distance.) In DS, the camera started inside the figure, and zooming it out led to a strange "cylindrical" view, which seemed to consist of one cross-section of the figures extended forward. No amount of zooming would correct the oddness.

AFAIK, poser cameras don't 'translate' to DS. They import as part of a pz3, but I don't think they're really supposed to. mac

I'm of the same opinion as you Ockham. IK doesn't seem to be there either. It's all looking very promising though and I'm intrigued to know what animation tools we will get eventually...

it better have a comprehensive graph editor and Dope sheet or serious animators will find it useless. SAXON!!! hi mate Long time no read :-)

I don`t like the binary format of the figures etc. One of the great things about poser figures is that you can easily edit them. Some people wont like this but daz studio seems to be like a very cut down version of poser 5, a sort of poser 5 extralite...

"Some people wont like this but daz studio seems to be like a very cut down version of poser 5, a sort of poser 5 extralite... " BUT unlike Poser5 this buggy alpha is FREE has open GL, hardware accelerated. Hell, DAZ even warned US MAC users that the MAC version is NOT stable But we May Play with it if we Choose TO and report BUGS anyway BTW I have NO Dog in any possible D/S vs. POSER5 beef :-) as I use Cinema4DXl 7 & 8 to render my poser files

Wolf! Nice to read you too mate! I wrote that last post 200 miles from where I am now, so you can see life has been complicated of late.... One day, when I grow up, I'll have a little studio in the country with roses round the door, cable and semi-naked women at my beck and call.... Incidentally, have a look see at what Computer Arts just wrote about Poser 5. Latest issue just out here in UK and they've got Poser as top dog.... Like the box job, what next? Motorcycle display team! Thumb to kink of it, there's that fabulous out-take of the majorettes all tangling up in the middle with those twirly things they use all crashing down all over the place, I'd love to do the faces of the mums in the audience.... Hmmm, the thought process is a funny old thing.....

saxon, you're right: DAZ specified that IK is currently not supported in their latest release notes.
