Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 22 9:27 pm)
Poser has a limit to how many props I can store in folders or how many folder im allowed to have for props? People who make stuff they sell should know this and not force folders on people for the sake of identifying thier stuff with thier product folder name, this is causeing problems if there is a limit to how many folders poser 4 can have. Now I must go and move prps alll around to get rid of excessive folders. Then ill have to resave every prop I move from one folder to another for the sake of the rsr going corrupted. this stinks.
Well, DM, the problem is that people who make stuff have to give the folder a name. Now they can't possibly know what folders you or anyone else already has, so they give their own name. That's the only way it can be done. Secondly, there's no reason at all to resave props. Just move them to another folder with the .rsr and they'll show up fine. It's not such a big problem. mac
Bingo? Have I won something? LOL. DM, Here's another thing you can do to make life easier. You can make up separate Runtime folders for Poser and use them according to what project you're working on. For example, you can add a folder to the library (in windows explorer) called 'Spare Props' and store all the prop folder you don't use often in it. Poser won't show it in the library, but when you want to use any props from it, you can drag the folders into the real Props folder. mac
I haven't actually seen Poser 5 in action, but this idea of separate runtimes sounds like overkill when all that's needed is simple subdirectories. I can create a subdirectory runtime/libraries/props/clothing/hats - what's so difficult about getting Poser to read it? Why does it have to stick at the "clothing" level? It's not like subdirectories are the latest bleeding edge of technology.
Well DM, this is an eternal problem for everyone using P4. And yes, it means work - organizing folders and sutff. And no, it's not the merchant's or freebie maker's fault. It's your problem, keeping your folder system in good shape. I spend a lot of time organizing my stuff, it's the only way I'll ever find any of it. ------------------------------------ Phantast - nested folders is of course standard in P5, it's the only reasonable way to go. P4 had the folder level limitation you mention, not P5. And there's no reason to have multiple Runtimes. I certainly down't have, in spite of ENORMOUS, RIDICULOUS numbers of files. :] Fish
Gaaah sorry I'm so late to this thread! Yes, as it has been pointed out, the 256 limit is why you can't access my folder. I have had the SAME problem before I got PBooost L I COULD do stuff like naming my folder !!!-TrekkieGrrrl-!!! but I know that'll piss off quite a lot of people so I only do that on my OWN computer ;o) Personally I prefer when people make a folder with their name on it. I can then choose to keep it (if it's from someone who makes LOTS of stuff) or remane/move it if the persona only made ONE item. Makes crediting easier too. Or I guess I could just throw it all in the zip with no paths at all? Many people do that too, and let the end user do the moving and installing. What I do with those downloads is that I install them into my Recycling Bin. I DON'T want to bother with moving pp2's, cr2's rsr's and what have you. NOR am I going to make folders inside my Geometries folder and hope that I got the casing and stuff all right before I place the stray obj there. Oh and I love that poopypic. I guess that prop will get a renaissance now :o)

Well im running 2 versions of poser, 4 and 5 fully stocked I guess I cou slim down poser 4 since I use it for quick renders and texturing of the millenium figures, I can delete all files to Don and Judy because I never ever use them at all in poser 5, maybe by the time this is done ill get a grreat portion of my drive back, poser and 5 are running on 30 gigs each on my drive at a total of 60 gigabytes between them both being fully stocked with oser stuff. Poser 5 has copies of everything I downloade for poser 4, but I see this is getting to be a problem. Some people have said why not just move your runtime folder, I did, and poser 5 became corrupted and would nopt open each time I did it in Windows XP. When I had windows 98 this never happened.
I do not like texturing figures without mat files in poser 5 because I don't understand how transmapping is done for eye lashes and brows, And the materails room even tho it is advanced and does alot more can be a pain to work with. sO, If I must custom job a figure withexturo it in poser 4. Save me time and a headace.
I know you weren't blaming me :o) As for the pathless zips, I don't think it's rude as such, it's mostly made by newbies who doesn't know any better, or sometimes by people who just didn't THINK about it. Still we're talking freebies (at least I am) so to call something free "mean" or "rude" is a little harsh ;o) I just know that unless it is something I really really really NEED for a picture, such items go right into my recycling bin, and it's a pity really, becourse someone too the time to make it, render a thumbnail, find a place to upload it, and then it is all for nothing. Making the correct paths is so EASY that I don't know why it should be so hard to some :o) But to be honest, I THINK some of my earliest things may have incorrect paths as well, or lack MAT poses if they're textures. But at that time I didn't know any better :o)
