Subject: Shader question from a Newbie

Pete_Exxtreme ( ) posted Sun, 01 February 2004 at 9:54 AM · edited Sat, 30 November 2024 at 4:32 AM

Hi Gurus,
I'm getting crazy with that stupid problem :
How to apply one shader to a group of objects, selecting them by name ? I've got maybe 6 differents shaders (colors/textures) to assign to 350 objects....so don't tell me about drag'n'drop ;-))
I'd like to select a group of these objects (BTW can you select a range of objects by selecting a low and a high bound in the sequencer tray for example ?) and assign it a shader....
For the gurus this question seems to be stupid i assume and i apoligize for that, but i can't find any information in the manual about that...

So please help !!!!!!
Pete

Pete,

At this point in the game, drag and drop is probably the easiest option. The key to keeping shaders hassle free in Carrara is planning ahead and heavy use of master shaders. As you model each part, create a new or assign it an existing master shader. Remember to assign each master shader a useful name (so you don't have a list of shader 1, shader 2, etc.) Now each time you update the Dirty Hull shader, it will change the entire spaceship.

Good luck,

Hi Pete, very glad to see a new user:-) About your question... Unfortunately is not possible to apply a shader to a group. But, If you have the same (or the default,) shader applied to yours 350 (!) objects, you can modify the default shader and the changes will be applied to the group. When the dialog windows appear you must choose "edit the master". Another crazy (because you have 350 objects) method is to export your group in wavefront format, then importing it in carrara (when importing select "create only one group in the dialog window) and add a shader by drag and drop. I hope this help, if not, let me know, i'm here:-) TOXE

Hi, Thanks for the answers ! I've got around 350 objects because i made a quite detailled modelling in Amapi :-) So i see that i can't get rid of dragging shaders ! Headache here i am ;-) Cheers Pete

This is one of those weird things that Raydream could actually manage that Carrara hasn't gotten up to speed yet. -Kix

What I've done is weld all the parts together in Amapi and then Carrara treats it as just one object. Done. That is, if you want the whole thing textured the same. Sometimes that doesn't always look great. I'm modelling some drones and adding all kinds of detail to them that will probably never be seen in the film because the camera doesn't get close enough in the scenes. But I like to know that a gear is there and screw is here, etc, while modelling them. www.shonner.com

If it is all one object, then at least you can use the UV editor to sort it out for easier texturing. I ran across the same thing for a meeting room flythrough I had to do for a client. The chairs, (all 582 of them!) needed a correction to the metal color. ARGH! Until I realized that trick with the master shader... changed that one shader and all the chairs were fixed! Saved my tush on THAT one! LOL!

Remember you've got a shader drop down on the first page of the object properties. Personally I find it faster for detailed models as point-and click makes targetting small items a pain. Mik

about the only thing That I have found to make it easier is to drag from the Master Shaders in the Sequencer to each item in the Sequencer.... much faster than dragging items in the workspace... (if you didn't know that already..) one other Idea is... make your shader BEFORE importing, rename it default.. then when importing asign the shader? Not sure if it will work or not but it's worth a try....?
