You have money, you buy a bunch of products from Daz, go to install and your 40gig hard drive dedicated to nothing but poser is full. You have no pz3s or any other unneccesary stuff on the drive and its still full. What do you do? I reduced the size of some of the textures but have just enough room for Steph3. Does anyone know where I can get P-un? It doesn't work from the freestuff.

This is what I do to slim the fat. I recently cleared 10 gigs off my drive Below are files to look for and possibly delete that we all tend to accumulate. Look at the paths and be sure you know what you are getting rid of. Proceed at your own risk. Search your hard drive for: File Formats -------------------------------- *.BUM (The most evil of files hogging memory. If you have Propack or P5 considering why you are still keeping these. *.mtl (if you export alot you may have hundred of these around your drive) If you don't use em, delete em. *.avi (ditch those old test animations) *.mpeg (delete the porn and music) *.mp3 (delete the porn and music) *.bmp (If you have templates you really are never going to use, delete them) *.tiff (Delete the stray crap) *.rsr(delete only those in geometry folders. if you don't use old stuff, Poser can make new ones when you do. *.psd (get rid of those old dusty photoshop files) *.pz3 *.cr2(WARNING...delete only those test ones you made to use once and forgot about) POSER CONTENT TO DUMP (subject to opinion but I deleted mine ----------------------------------------- P4 cat P4 Dog P4 Horse Everything P3 Everything P2 Everything Mil baby (hehehe) Kill those lousy pose folders filled with baseball poses. :) Adult content(for the guys at least) --------------------------------------- Get selective. Dump the beasts and save the feasts. :) Things to check for --------------------------- search for any folders called New Folder Look in each one found and see what can get deleted. Email, downloads, and unzipped folders ----------------------------------------- K if you have the same file in a attachment, download folder and also unzipped you are a lost cause. Kidding. If you haven't used it in 6 months are you really going to? Download, delete mail with attachments, and delete half empty unzipped folders. ZIP ZIP ZIP ------------------------------- Time to pack up those collectibles and antiques. Garbage day is here and the attic is empty. Start zipping up things that you haven't used in 6 months. Oh Vikci you're so fine!....was. -------------------------------------- If V3 and SP are all you care about these days...time to consider shipping the version 1.0's to the attic in zip files or unistall them. "this downoad freebie sucked" or "Yet another map with orange/green bodyhair" ------------------------------------------------------ We all love freebies but we all have tons of crap we thought would be good but forgot to delete aafter we looked at it. PPP please -------------------- If you have P4 and never plan on getting P5, search for PPP If the path in in Poser folders it stands for PoserProPack. Look for MAT Files you can dump. Install This... ------------------ If you have installers....go to daz, type in the code, rename your installers so you know what they are, backem up , and get them OFF the hard Drive Parting words.......... To each his or her own. If something I have said above alarms you please don't tell me :) These recommendations are for those DESPERATE for space. Check everything 10 times, be sure you know what it is and look for duplicates. Hope this was mildy entertaining and useful. Geep this would make a nice tutorial if someone was so inclined as to do a better job than I. :)

Anton, I agree with your methods of getting rid of stuff. Installing P5 made me get rid of a hell of a lot of waste. Certainly, dumping P4 MATs is a good idea if you don't need them. It also prevents you clicking on 'em by accident. It's wise to check the other Library folders, too. Merchants sometimes put poses in them to stop Pose becoming overloaded.

Do the Poser 4 MATs still work OK in ProPak? Does it know what to do when it sees bumpimg.bum instead of bumpimg.jpg? Or do you need to edit all of those MATS?

Yeah I want to dump all the P3 and some P4 stuff till I get my new machine w/dual 120gig HDs. The delema is the time it takes to go through and decide what to chuck. I was looking for a program called P-un(Poser-Uninstaller) that was in free stuff. It's still there, but a dead link. Anyone know where to find it?

Not sure about P4 MATS in Propack regarding .BUM Also never heard of the utility. Sounds awesome though. Again....not for the weak of heart or rash. Double check before removing. If you are still hard pressed for space here are more suggestions: Loose the lace.. ------------------------ You make textures? OK.. we have all used the same 12 lace textures tooo death.. delete em. Point being, go through your image resource folders and crop everything and save it compressed. Combine small images into collages. I don't need no documentation! --------------------------------------- search for *.pdf and get rid of acrobat docs you have no need for. and free samples??????? ----------------------------------------- Seach for folders called SAMPLE see what pops up. Most software comes with useless free content and samples you might not want. Fat floats to the top ------------------------------- Brows image folders and sort by file size. Open them and look. If the image/texture is just average resize itsmaller and compress more. Remember....images over 2000 by 2000 can be saved out of PS at level 7 with almost no loss to the naked eye. Besides, Poser anti-aliases everything to hell. And....Hi res blur is just spam. Resize large blurry images smaller. Blurry hi res is just pointless. Alpha..Beta..Gamma -------------------------------------- Search for folders or files called BETA Remove em. All that helpful beta testing is over and you don't need these if you got the final files. Eye of the beholder!!! or "Splitting hairs" ---------------------------- Did someone make you buy 100 hue shifts of the same eyemap at 1000 by 1000 each? need I say more? Look for hair textures that are identicle except for just a hue shift. make a backup greyscale for yourself(material colors in Poser work wonders) if you want and remove the spam. Readme later! --------------------------- Search for and remove read me files that you have no need for. As Barabara sang, "Like the way we warez..." ------------------------------------------------ Feeling guilty lately? Pretending it doesn't exist? :) Delete the warez downloads and files. You will feel better about yourself. It tastes alittle gamey -------------------------------- Do you STILL have quake and baulder's Gate installed. tisk tisk. You aren't ever going to get to the next level if you haven't already so consider unistalling your games. You can always zip your saved game files.

To add to what has already been said, if you use P5, compress your Poser files when you save them. This will save a TON of hard disk space. I have a lot of space, so I never bothered with compression, but when I tried it, I was shocked at how much the compression scheme squashes the files -- like ninety per cent!

Another quick fix, if you have IE..(my sympathies), go to Tools|Internet Options|Delete Files, and check 'delete offline content'..every web page or picture from the internet you've visited gets stored there, and just are there to allow for faster screen refreshes. They don't really get erased. It does add up over time. And try stuff like Ad-Aware (Lavasoft), which will round up a lot of the cookies (they don't take much space, but they can be a trial) and squash 'em. Good luck.

It's also not necessary to carry Transparency Maps in millions of colors--shrink them to 2 or 4 or 16 shades of grey.

Another tip to eliminate future clutter is to test new freebie downloads in Poser 5's downloads section where it can readily be deleted if it's not something to be used any time soon A few more areas to reclaim space is to eliminate Internet Explorer's temporary files by going to IE's Tools/Internet Options, click the Delete Files button and check the Delete All Offline Content and let IE clear out 100s of Mb of files. Delete a bunch of files accumulating in the TEMP folder under Windows (Win 95, 98, ME), but I'm not sure where it is in XP (it's under Windows, but doesn't have the typical junk in it, so I'n not sure it's the right one).

is there an echo in here?..;) Temp folder in XP..humm..I'm actually using a Network version, so mine is under my profile under 'documents and settings'. The trick to deleting temp files is to make sure you don't have any programs running, deleting temp files on a running program can cause..er, interesting results. But you can delete some of them.

Hmmm. There are easy ways of keeping poser under control. I only have a 6Gig drive, most of which is taken up by software. But thanks to a CD writer and one of the Poser Uninstallers from the marketplace, I manage to use poser with a large collection of goodies. To begin with, you need your runtime folders in zips (just install those DAZ files to a temp folder and zip them!), then you transfer them by theme (and properly catalogued on the cover) to CDs. Now you use your installer/uninstaller (which can be run whilst using poser) to install items as you want them and when your finnished, select them from the list of installed items and click uninstall. It couldn't be easier and the program only cost about $15. If you want to uninstall items you've installed previously, thats not a problem either. Select the item's zip file and you can add it to your list of installed items without installing it - and now you can uninstall it.

Well that does sound cool, I do that with all my stuff, but not everyone else's, that Unistaller is here at the Market place....must go get it. Sharen

I've solved my problem by organizing everything into seperate runtime files and, then using my dvd recorder I store them on 4.7 gig blank dvd disks. Making back up copies along the way of course. When I want to use something I just pop a dvd disk in to my drive and direct poser to the runtime I want to use and I'm all set. Clears up a lot of disk space. Once I get another 4.7 gigs of stuff on my hard drive I burn another disk along with a back up and, then erase those files off my hard drive. Brad.

Ok, I posted this idea a while back and no one rose to the bait. Why doesn't some really bright person who understands writing code and visual basic and c++ and all that mysticism stuff write a program that will let you view a file structure with a graphic viewer, click on a file, then it automatically seeks all the related files that go with that one file and deletes the whole mess in a single move? Wouldn't that be just too spiffy? One click mess removal! ahem...all I would ask is a working copy of the program for my contribution...something to clean out the 10 GB of Poser stuff on the HD of my laptop...

Cedarwolf, that would be very tricky. The problem is that Poser files often share things. I may have a bunch of cr2s that all use the Vicki obj but which each have different morphs and textures. If I go to delete one, chances are I want to delete the cr2 and associated texture, but I don't want to delete the Vicki mesh. A tool that does what you describe would have to recognise that there are still other cr2s using the mesh so it shouldn't be deleted. That requires a full database of all of the Poser files on your drive and how they relate to each other. Hogwarden has done programing similar to that in the yet-to-be-released Correct Refference Pro. If I were you I'd write to him directly. I'd say he's your best bet for building that sort of utility.

Ajax, thanks for the heads-up on correct refference pro. I've attempted to use the other version and it hangs when I use it. It won't find something it thinks it should and just gives up at that point. Hogwarden does incredible coding and I'm looking forward to the new release now that I know about it!

The free version of Correct Refference hangs when you use it? That's not good. I'd write to Hogwarden about that too. I suspect the Pro version works around the same or very similar core code, so if the free version hangs, Pro might too.

Ajax, ran CR last night, sometime during the night it began generating errors, mostly stack errors of some sort...had to crash the computer to reset everything. I'll let Hogwarden know about the error messages.

Search for all files with the name Template and consider deleting them to save space.
