Well, Haloedrain, the only reason to benchmark stuff is to get an idea of which hardware configurations are the most time-profitable for us... In this case, until people with Macs start posting, anyway, Johnny's Athlon 2200 takes the cake. The factors involved, as far as I understand it, are : Processor speed RAM amount FSB speed HD speed (NOT capacity) When the Render Time (Rt) equals 1/60th of a second, we will have realtime rendering. That's when all of our old Bryce scenes become gold, in terms of the video-game industry and of course the imaging and virtual reality industries. Processors need be a mere 200 times faster or so to accomplish this, which seems ludicrous, but then again, when the Commodore 64 came out at a whopping 1 MHz processor speed, who would have thought we'd be pulling GHz so soon, and for so cheap? Also, financially... The fastest renderers are also, to invert some obnoxious Law of Money for once, the cheapest! Some people stand by Intel, but alas... Let's see some Mac render times? ANYONE?!?!? (grins)
This was done on my 4 year old Power PC G4 - 533 MHz.
At first, I thought it was shame making but when I did the sums, things did not look so bleak.
I am going to skip a generation and see what G6 has to offer.
Speaking as a visual person! why do we never talk about monitors? I sometimes wonder if folks are seeing my images in quite the same way as I am? It has been said a few times of my work that things "look a bit dark". I have a LACIE ELECTRON 22 Blue which shows everything in the most splendid colours and definition, the clarity is startling, even with what I perceive to be colouristicaly dull images.
Seeing as Brendan McSherry has laid his Power PC Cyber Testicals on the table for every one to see! ....show me your Monitors, speed and size of chip ain't everything!
3:42 on XP Home, Bryce 5, 2.4ghz P4 Presario 1525 Laptop, 512 ram. I shut down as much as I could but still had a lot of TSR running. THis shows various things. I'm jealous of Swade and jonhnyf And feel sorry for JC_01. I'll be upgrading my laptop soon then.

Brendan :Speaking as a visual person! why do we never talk about monitors? That's sort of why I started all this before, because I have this new Sony S73 LCD Monitor, and was kind of discouraged comparing it to my other Samsung 171s also LCD that I have, which looked washed out almost.Soooo.I made the guy who owns the PC company a website and he gave me another new Sony. Now side by side,I know it is the video card. The Samsung is still in my opinion not quite as good because the blacks on sony are real black, and white is real white. I tweak from defaults a bit on reds ,and contrast, but thats about it. Now if someone can tell me what is real green.LOL

Chohole - thats my pIII 450 with its 320 MB of ram.. the one I use for all my 3d stuff..... one day I'll get a new PC... Though, must admit, I'm dying to know what JC_01 is using.

Hi Amethyss, thankfully my sister, who is a printmaker, looks after the calibrations, even though the LACIE came with it's own elaborate software, the scanner and monitor have to be brought into line for consistent results from screen to print. As for the perfect green!, dangle a ring necked parakeet in front of the screen and tune untill the bird dissapears against the background, remember to cover the keyboard, as this is often a messy process. I wonder if any one here has experimented with rendering in different colour profiles from the default in Bryce? One to look into!

Lol, if you are a parakeet lover you may prefer to use Bryce Alive's monitor calibration page, can be printed to calibrate complete sytstem. I was going to say 'or use Colorific', but it looks like colorific is no more :-(----------

After amethyss' comment about render times, I thought it might be intersting to have a benchmark thread. At the link is a file originally prepared by Eric Wenger to be used to benchmark render times. It's a .br3 file, so can be used on different versions of Bryce. It's also available in both PC and Mac versions. Here's the screenshot after I rendered it. I didn't adjust anything--just load and render.
