Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 03 1:41 pm)
There is a well-known limit of 256 folders in any library if you are using Poser 3,4 or ProPack. If you manage your libraries and only have installed what you truly need and are using, it is easy to stay within this. If you let files install themselves willy-nilly or install megapacks with 40 shades of eyecolor and 20 lipsticks... you will run out of space real fast. A few merchants are setting their MATs to install in the camera or other directory, which I find even more deplorable. That ONLY increaes the clutter and who in this middle earth is going to search-and-destroy eye color MATs if they are hiding under cameras or lights? You have a few choices. The first is most obvious: backup your files and thin down the Runtime. This will allow it to load faster and you will be able to find what you need without scrolling endlessly. The second is to purchase a product called PBooost which may or may not work for you, and which is PC-only. You will then have to organize your folders into ranks which can get loaded. The third is to upgrade to Poser 5 which has nested directories and the ability to have multiple Runtimes. You won't have to throw anything away, but you will still have to organize your stuff so that you can find it again. There are people who chafe at the limit... but the alternative is scrolling through 12000 names hunting for that lipstick! Carolly
Another thing you can do is consolidate some of your folders. I can't tell you how much space I gained by taking all the folders that had only one or two MAT poses in them and sticking them all in one folder named, you guessed it, MAT Characters (with the appropriate V1, 2, or 3 tacked onto the front to keep it organized). So now, all those single mat files are in V1 Mat Characters, V3 MAT characters, etc. Got rid of TONS of folders just with that alone. Kate
I tend to consolidate more by item and type of pose. Makes it easier for me to find what I'm looking for. Cataloging by merchant would be a nightmare for me because then I'd have to keep a separate list of which merchant did what. Not exactly speedy when I'm looking for the mat or mor files for a V3 character and can't remember which merchant made it. :)
Whether you organize by character (Vicki, Natalia, Mayadoll) or merchant (PhilC, Anton, SergeMarck) or type of item (clothes, vehicles, plants) isn't as important as simply being organized. Any system will work as long as there is a system for installing and finding things. With thousands and thousands of files, this becomes vital. I don't let anything install itself... not even DAZ installers... because I want to know where it is going and why. Carolly
As a Poser 4 user, I keep a separate pose folder outside of Runtime, but within the Metacreations>Poser folder, for poses currently not in use. This works pretty well for me, although I sometimes forget what's in there as opposed to what's in the actual poses folder. The only reason I'm not buying PBoost is because I want to see what Poser 6 will be like, first. :-) This is an excellent thread. Big thanks to Doug re: the INJ/REM poses idea.

Hi, It seems that I have too many pose directories in the pose library. While in Poser, when I try to access some of the pose directories (the ones down at the bottom), Poser doesn't pull them up. Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a way to get rid of this limitation? (Other than what I'm doing... temporarily moving some of the directories out of the pose library directory). Thanks for any help, john...
