Subject: If I remeber correctly 3 uploads were the limit allowed to all members...

DarkMatter_ ( ) posted Thu, 05 February 2004 at 9:18 PM · edited Mon, 23 December 2024 at 2:21 PM

Gallery Plus [Purchase] Want more gallery uploads? Now you can have it. This service offering provides up to 3 uploads per day within the gallery feature. One time setup fee of $5 with a monthly $5 fee. And yet RENDEROSITY has changed this to turn a buck under are noses, thanks renderosity for taking away what we used to have so that you can make five bucks off everyones wallet. unless we buy this service we can only upload one gallery image per day instead of the 3 that we used to be allowed under normal memberships. I think this is rude and underhanded I also think it has an indian givers addittude.

DarkMatter_ ( ) posted Thu, 05 February 2004 at 9:21 PM

If renderosity said Hey you can now buy this service an have unlimited uploads to the gallerys instead of 3 uploads a day, Id say cool, But instead Renderosity took 2 uploads a day away from all of us to run thier little pay scam.

DarkMatter_ ( ) posted Thu, 05 February 2004 at 9:27 PM

And why do you think rnderosity took 2 uploads a day from everyone?. to limit those not on the service so they would have incentive to purchase Gallery plus, I think tis is soooooo ignorant of Renderosity to start useing such tactics on it's on members as to cut what they were given free to push a product idea. This is my opinion, I think that was rude but I still love ya renderosity even when you piss me off from time to tiem, I just want to tell you I think that is pushing the sell bit a little hard, Don't you think?

Tashar59 ( ) posted Thu, 05 February 2004 at 9:28 PM

It's been like that for quite awhile. I think it was to slow down on bandwidth and help slow down all the renders from being buried so fast. The only ones that seem to be affected are those that do stories and such. 365 images a year is still a lot. I can't even get 12 a year done. LOL.

DarkMatter_ ( ) posted Thu, 05 February 2004 at 9:34 PM

they keep this up this place will become a gost town...

dialyn ( ) posted Thu, 05 February 2004 at 9:43 PM

I would still say 365 images a year (366 this year) is still probably an awesome amount of art for any one person to be able to create, no matter how wonderful they are. But that's just my opinion, which isn't worth much, I know.

dialyn ( ) posted Thu, 05 February 2004 at 9:45 PM

And, come to think about it, that doesn't include images posted to threads. Or the limitless amount you could post to your own website and just link from here. Between one thing or another, seems like a pretty fair deal.

DarkMatter_ ( ) posted Thu, 05 February 2004 at 9:47 PM

Sure it is, I just feel like we got a little slammed with the gallery plus pay service that's all. But I don't upload much hardly at all here and when I want to post a few images I find I can't out what I think may be 7 images I may have posted all year here... So the little guy is getting ripped off more then the gallery hogs.

DarkMatter_ ( ) posted Thu, 05 February 2004 at 9:50 PM

DIALYN I respect your opinions as long as they are truly yours and not just said here for the sake of looking like a renderosity supporter.

Tashar59 ( ) posted Thu, 05 February 2004 at 10:01 PM

As one of the little guys, I don't feel I'm getting ripped off. I think it benefits us. Less renders means us wee people get a few more views. Now if I can just get my upload timing right, I wouldn't be surrounded by the top 20 artist names. Don't you hate it when that happens? LOL even harder at myself.

Spike ( ) posted Thu, 05 February 2004 at 10:22 PM

Bandwidth costs are very high for a site like this. Do the math We have 164,000 active members. If all of them uploaded 1 image each day, 164,000 X one month = 4,920,000 images per month X the size of each image X how many views each image might get = A boatload of bandwidth. That cost is a lot higher than you might think. The $5 few to allow a member upload 3 per day is the best way to make it fair to the rest of the members that do not use 3 times the bandwidth. Not only that, but as others in this thread have pointed out. It makes a member think more about what they upload and slows down the rotation. Spike

Erm...that's pretty much what I posted here on another topic that was completely bashed by Illusions. I was told there are NO problems with bandwidth or space (fairly vehemently by Illusions, and nicely by a different mod. Now a different mod is basically confirming it..."expensive....a boatload of bandwidth...that cost is a lot higher than you might think." Then all the posts by Illusions were deleted (was he banned? I have no idea...) so it looks like I'm a nut case picking on Illusions and completely throws off any interpretation of the thread correctly, which started about image size and scrolling. Other than Illusions picking at me for having the gall to have a different opinion, there was good discussion going on. If Rendo had said..."Hey..its starting to cost us a lot...love to keep it, but c'mon loyal users..help us out..." I could understand. But to deny it then have a mod confirm it? I just don't get it. It's pretty obvious when you take something away and then make people pay for it if they want it back that its a money move, even with the caveat (which I do understand) of "images getting buried".

One-a-day is plenty. It keeps people from dumping lots of quickies, and increases the overall quality of the posts.

DarkStarRising ( ) posted Fri, 06 February 2004 at 7:41 AM

personally, i prefer the one a day rule, some of us dont post everyday, and if there is a sequence in posts (like comic strips, part ones and twos etc) the peeps viewing can see on that persons gallery to see the images!

In the words of DarkStarRising:
"Sadness within sadness,
Darkness within darkness,
a shadow of a form lays upon the floor,
looking at herself
looking at her own shadows of loneliness"

Caly ( ) posted Fri, 06 February 2004 at 8:37 AM

One-a-day is tough on Photographers, where it's possible to get MANY excellent images done in 1 day. And yes, what Zai said. I thought 'rosity had no money issues with bandwidth, at least that's what the old thread said.

Just because there are no "money issues" doesn't mean it makes financial sense to continue paying huge bandwidth fees. I didn't read the old thread, but when I see someone say something like "no money issues" it just means to me that they aren't losing money on bandwidth -- making enough of a profit to keep the site worth running is very different. I upload once a month these days, so the limit doesn't affect me, but I also agree with Matteo -- since the one per day limit has been entrenched, I've seen a great decline in the quickie POS art that used to bury the better quality stuff in under an hour.

hmatienzo ( ) posted Fri, 06 February 2004 at 11:47 AM

IMO, I don't see how one can produce 3 GREAT renders a day... Look at a lot of... erm, less than pretty pictures posted.

JC_01 ( ) posted Fri, 06 February 2004 at 12:17 PM

The people who are having problems with the 1/day are the ones, like the threads state, who do sequential things...photographers, story writers, and perhaps those who save up a whole months worth, or two, of renders and post them all at once. I personally LOVE the idea of not having my work buried in sometimes as little as 2 or 3 hours. Those of us who are establishing ourselves, working hard to produce quality images, know when to post a picture, and when it's too much of a POS to bother. And i hated seeing all those gorgeous images by the greats being buried in no time. Perhaps, at some point in time, the 1 upload a day could be refigured for 7/week total in the sequential type galleries. I know this is pinpointing and grouping one gallery over another, which has a huge potential for a riot as is. Then there is always the thought of allowing the members decide in their profile/sign up if they would like their 365 freely posted images counted at 1 per day, or as 7 per week, and let them choose for themselves. When the 7 is done, it's done. Just a few thoughts... Jen

"My hat's off to anyone that can churn out 3+ worthy images a day on a consistent basis." Mine too, if we're talking about rendering apps. However, there are plenty of gifted photographers, for example, who can create 3+ worthy images a day. But let's face it, the Photography gallery wasn't the problem. I've always supported the idea of limits on uploads, and still do. I think DM missed all the messages and discussions that were posted when the policy change went into effect. Many members did indeed request limits.

That I included in the other thread as well. My problem wasn't the limit, it was the timing. Sometimes I have 2 finished, or maybe 3 in a month . Then I go back and finalize the sig and frame etc....the mood strikes and I finish. But then I have to come back every day for 3 nights, watch the clock, and hope I don't break any rules just to get the images up. That's why I stopped posting to my gallery here.

The reason I spoke up for how large (read width/height & scrolling issues as in the other thread) the image was was not only for bandwidth reasons, but presentation reasons. Doing professional layout for sites and ads for years, I am "trained" to see from the consumer's prospective and not from the artist's which sometimes conflict.

Other places have the one a day rule, but it was in effect before I ever got there and it wasn't taken away and then given back in the form of "now ya gotta pay for it" and here's 3 different excuses why.

I for one AM going to build my own space to exhibit at some point, which I also suggested. I may not get the community traffic, but I can be assured that I can post what and how I like and I know that the clients I send there will have no way of viewing the mess that has become of Rendo (forums & flames). My involvement here was more of a private place to hang out artisitically as my commercial work is not based on "original" art, its more slanted toward e-commerce and magazines and marketing campaigns.

The 7 a week thing (even 3 a week if I could do them all at once) would not be that hard to implement. It's a simple counter script. So I'd vote for that if anyone is listening...

OK! Guys do the math! We have 164,000 active members. If all of them uploaded 1 image each day, 164,000 X one month = 4,920,000 images per month X the size of each image X how many views each image might get = A boatload of bandwidth. And I do the math.... 164,000 members X 5.00$/month X 12 months = 9 840 000 $ Wow! Get serious! What a lot money for you! It's my opinion...but i know the cost of the bandwith, ok i admit this is not free but.....

Well, it's kind of like a bank. You never need worry about that, since we all know not every single person is going to upload three images in one day, just as the bank works on the assumption that not everybody is going to want every last cent in their account at the same time.

Let's be realistic here - a lot of Renderosity users probably haven't logged on in months or years.

I think the three a day limit was realistic, myself. I just discovered this new one a day limit accidentally. I think this was the first time in months I tried to post more than one image in a day. I'm lucky if I upload one in a week.

Why doesn't Rendo compromise and allow 1 or 2 per Gallery per day. There are many Gallery's that no way can anyone good post more then one per day example: Terragen, Poser, Bryce ,Veu however photography,2d art, fractals and a few others have no problem with posting more per day yet we're limited to just one so its catch 22 Since so many of us post or would like to post in other gallery's it seems it would make much more sense to allow 1 or 2 per day per each gallery think about it Rendo look at the talented Artist's here that are now going to other Galleries to post why because of the limit of 1 per day period.

LunarSight ( ) posted Mon, 09 February 2004 at 4:56 PM

Well, some of us may horde our images. I often don't post during the weekdays, due to lack of time. So may have more than one upload a day on weekends as a result of this. - I tend to let my images ferment as well. Sometimes I'll shelf them, not thinking they're good enough, and then throw them up for the heck of it later on. - Because of this, the notion that a good artist can't upload more than one image for some styles of art isn't always accurate.

BluesPadawan ( ) posted Thu, 12 February 2004 at 10:11 AM

I'd like to see the one a day limit lifted or modified to 7 per week. It's quite true that many people do create, let the picture sit for a bit, and then have a flood of creativity come about. A maximum of 7 per week or 30 a month, makes great sense to me.
