Subject: Queer preview in vertex modeler - HEEEELP!!!

Hi everyone,

I've just upgraded to Carrara 3 and ran right into a problem : I wanted to work on a clothing object (one-sided polys), but I get such a strange preview in the vertex modeler that I'm hardly able to select vertices to work with ! I've tested the same object in Carrara 2 and it worked fine, but I think I remember I had this problem once there, too; only can't remember why. Now, I've made all my interactive render settings match those of Carrara 2, but I don't get any changes. If you look at the image, do you maybe have any idea ? It looks to me like a) the mesh is sort of transparent, you can see the backside polys, and b) the vertices are not where they should be, but somehow off point. Help anybody, please !!!!!!

Smoothing on?

Share the file? I'm not quite sure what you are getting. The vertices look almost as if the object wasn't properly imported by Carrara. Brian

I agree with Brian, can you share the file? Have you tried to switch to OpenGL? Let me know... -TOXE

I've seen this effect with very high magnifications, which is what you seem to have. Sometimes you can correct it by using the zoom tool to zoom out and then zoom back in, rather than using the tracking tools and mouse. If you've not got too high a poly count you might try enlarging the whole object by say 10 and reducing again when you've finished work. Mark

Thanks everyone ! I think falconperigot, you've got it right basically, because I found out now that if I take the model into the vertex room and then rescale it REEEEAAAALLY large, like by 2000% - bingo, everything works just fine. It's still strange though because not only can Carrara 2 handle the same model without any problems, but obviously the same thing occurs with ALL very small models (like Poser for example)... So it seems all about too high magnification indeed. Oh, and smoothing was not turned on, and switching to OpenGL doesn't change a thing. I've mailed to Eovia now, sent them the picture, if they know what to make of it, I'll let you know if you're interested.

THis is a bug going back to the first release. It happens usually at high magnification such as if using Poser figures at their native size. I'd mentioned it before SR1 came out and was told that it was corrected, but it wasn't. A work around is to use one of the Poser related scaler programs to increase and decrease the scale of the figure before importing it. I say use these programs because changing the scale natively in Carrara can cause distortions when moving back into Poser. Most annoying since I use Carrara to model for Poser and vice versa (figures from Poser to Carrara, and one of the better features of Carrara 1 and 2 over "higher" end programs was the ability to work with Poser figures in their native scale. I've probably tried every change (not for this reason, but I even upgraded graphics cards while looking for a fix.) and can't find a fix. You can learn to work around this without rescaling. The points are "off set" and you need to move the pointer around until the 'point', 'line, or 'vertex' icon appears. It works but it's incredably clumbsy. I hope if you hear from Eovia with anything positive you publish it here. mike

I still run into that when I try to zoom in really close to work on a fine detail; all of the selection tools become very tedious (the marquee really saves the day here). I gave up a long time ago trying to stay in Poser native scale. Mostly because the C2 cameras kept reverting when I'd change views, and it was a pain to get the model back into the field of view. I scale up until it is comfortable to work with, then I import to Poser at 100% figure scale, switch on wire-frame, and line it up there. For clothing this is definately close enough. For morphs, I get a little wobble, but since I'm not animating I don't care.

One other problem I've encountered with C3 that wasn't in C2 or earlier (as a tip to C3/Poser users)is the scale tool. When reduced to Poser native scale dragging the scale tool has almost no effect, ysu are almost forced to use the numeric scaling from the menu bar. By increaseing the scale of objects imported from Poser to Carrara the effects of dragging the scale tool become more useful. mike
