I was commissioned a job to re-create this cover. The wanted the flags to look better, I thought of doing it in Photoshop with a displacement map, but decided to give old Carrara a shot.

Although it still is missing the logo, I think it looks a lot better. The best thing was that it took very little time to complete compared to my initial solution of using Photoshop.

The CMYK color profile may not display correctly in some browsers, e.g. Netscape. It looks okay, otherwise.

I think wat xenophonz means it that the second image does not display. It shows up as a broken image icon on my system too. PC/Mozilla. Ed

Me too, (PC, IE6) The first image is fine. The second is a broken image.

FWTempest ( ) posted Fri, 20 February 2004 at 8:29 AM

Me 2... when I right click where the pic should be and choose "view image", I get the following result: 'The image http://www.renderosity.com/photos/MSG2/Message1671314.jpg cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.' PC - Netscape 7.1

Sorry about that, I guess OS X with Quartz can display anything. My bad. This job was always intended for pint, so the first thing I did was move it to CMYK. But anyways this is what I came up with.

The stars around the border are a huge improvement by themselves. Those original ones were just brutal.

Pinklet ( ) posted Fri, 20 February 2004 at 3:41 PM

Yes, it was real easy to come up with something better then what my client came up with. His original design was horrible. The colored rainbow background is terrible too. The particular challenge in this case was redoing the flags in a believable fashion. I think Carrara did a great job with very little effort from my part. This hole cover took less then 45 minutes to remake.

Thanks for the kind comments.

Excellent, thanks for the repost.

You should write a quick tutorial on how you did it.

I starded by modeling the flags with the Spline modeler. Extruded a line then I added points and mead them semicircular with the curve tool.

Then I used a Modifier to give it more of a hanging of the pole look. I thought of modeling this in the Vertex modeler but I thought again that a modifier might just to the trick much faster.

I then applied a JEPG of the American flag to the model that I originally created with Adobe Illustrator. The mapping on this surface was not quite right so I decided to tile it twice to get more of the flag in two the image and positioning the flag so that the second tile would not be visible.

Once I was happy with the Shading of this model I duplicated it with symmetry and proceeded to shade the other flag, I used a JEPG exported from another Illustrator file I drew from the Pakistani flag.

I lit the hole seen with only one distant light. I used soft shadows and photo realistic rendering settings for the final render.

I hope this helps someone, it was a very easy procedure and, like I said it took no time. I apologize for any misspellings. I am Mexican and English is my second language.

Howdy! I tried your flag and my mapping is way off. The original file (PSD) from Illustrator is 604x371 pixels by 95ppi. Any thoughts on why it's mapping so large? Deedub
