Subject: SR4, how do I fix this?

Any ideas how I fix this problem with the images dropping out on some of the linked libraries? They work fine in P4 and used to work fine in SR3 of P5 but this is what I get in some but not all of the libraries now with SR4. Win2kSP4 P5sr4

Could this be your problem? Quote from CuriousLabs post. "Library ------- - If desired, Poser can now omit thumbnails when browsing library categories that contain more than a certain threshold of items. Default set at 100 items per subfolder. Please adjust the previewNum value in Runtime/prefs/LibraryPrefs.xml if you prefer a different value."

DOH! You mean I actually have to READ the instructions? Thanks, that did the trick. But I guess I now have a .xml modified outside the original so if there is ever another SR it won't overwrite? Oh well, can't win 'em all. I do like the firefly now. Seems to be faster on the shadowmaps with complex lighting sets. Like WAY faster.

Just an observation, but: Is the default behavior of SR4 to turn the thumbnails OFF? In other words, changing the interface from what the Library used to be?? From what people were used to? And then the user has to scrounge around in an XML file to change it back? Ah, good old CL: issue a service pack that fixes some issues and causes even more. And here I was, thinking that Service Packs should resolve past issues, not add new features that may or may not work properly. Is SR4.1 out yet?

No it's apparently not coming until next year, and will cost $'s (P6). Whether it'll fix bugs - as the current (and the previous) CEO promised - or add features and bugs - as the survey effort seems to indicate - we won't know until ... some time after P6 ships.

I agree that they needed to speed up .png thumbnail display - it's even a problem on PP - but could they really not have speeded up the actually .png display code itself - on 4 year old code? I too find "Oh our .png display code is too slow for you, then let us turn it off for you" a tad insulting. (Even switching it back to .rsr would have speeded it up.)

And to rub it in they choose a relatively low value, and instruct you to use an editor to raise it! If they weren't at least going to address it via a Prefs setting in the ui, they could at least have set the default to something innocuous like 1000. I predict we'll see a steady stream of "What happened to my thumbnails?" posts in the future months. Like we do for shrinking library names, and the scene window off the upper left of window, and ...

What were they thinking? I'd REALLY like to see CL's definition of when a product is "good enough" to stop fixing it. It might make interesting reading. (I'm guessing it's along the "when it gets too hard" lines, rather than anything objective ;-)

And to avoid someone else having to say it, yes I am still "ungrateful" for CL shipping but not fixing all of it's problems in 18 months (on a release that appears to have had less than that as a development schedule). And yes, I'd still take my money back in exchange for putting my copy of the software out of its misery if they'd give it to me.

1 - default behavior is that if you have more than 100 items in a specific folder, then the thumbnails will be turned off. 100 seemed a good number at the time, I'm sure. They could have decided to not tell you how to change it let everyone spend six months figuring out how. 2 - So far, I haven't seen any new SR4 bugs. And I am looking. 3 - There will be no further service packs. 4 - All the fixes have been pretty well checked out. I'm very surprised overall. 5 - The change to the library had nothing to do with png display speed at all. Or even library display speed. It simply makes it easier to see what you have in a folder that happens to be full. 6 - The ability to set it in prefs would be very nice. 7 - I happen to think 100 is pretty innocuous myself. 8 - When you purchased P5, you had 30 days to return it. What? Oh, sorry, then. 9 - It does occurr to me that if ya don't like it that much, you could always just stop using it. Heckfire, I know I would! Sorta like I did with Lightwave.

Just curious -- what caused you to dislike Lightwave?

ynsaen,

You're free to be a CL booster if you want, same as I'm free to have opposing views, but please get your facts right:

8 - When you purchased P5, you had 30 days to return it. What? Oh, sorry, then.

CL would not honor returns on the first release of Poser 5. And as I bought it directly from them I could not return to the retailer either. Nor could I contest the credit card payment as CL (illegally) billed the card at order time before the product was available to ship, and so way too much time had passed o contest when they did finally ship.

And FTIW I have stopped using it, which is why I'd still like to get my money back. I just tried the SR4 update to see if it had fixed the intolerably slow and unpredictable parameter dial adjustments.

5 - The change to the library had nothing to do with png display speed at all. Or even library display speed. It simply makes it easier to see what you have in a folder that happens to be full.

"see" ... by not displaying them? Ha, ha, He, He. That's sooo funny as a reason to mess with something that wasn't even broke.

Apologies, Layingback -- I did not know you had pre-ordered it. Here in my home state of Arizona, such a situation is still covered, and if they did indeed charge you illegally then you should pursue the matter -- which it seems you have done to the best of your ability. I had a similar experience with an extra Oracle 8i installtion I was billed for on one job, so I fully understand the frustration. And Since I do not use oracle myself, it does sorta sit there looking ugly. I'd love to sell it, but the b2b license it's under prevents me from doing so. Sorta sucks big time. Xenophonz, I gave up lightwave because I'm an idiot, and admittedly so. I'm not a modeller in the regular sense by any means, despite occasionally wishing it were so. Someday there will be a modeller that I can figure out how to take my drawings and sketches and use them to create my figure in a manner that seems to work for me. Lightwave is still an awesome tool, mind you -- it's just not the one for this gal, lol. (yep, that means I just couldn't figure it out)

{No it's apparently not coming until next year, and will cost $'s (P6).} Do we have any verifiable proof on this? If CL is significanty raising the price (even though there may be significantly new features), will the "core" Poser market purchase it? So far, without even knowing the price, most people (even a number of P5 supporters) WON'T purchase it immediately, fearing a repeat of the buggy first release of P5. People will probably wait 5-6 months for the 1st (or 7th or 8th) Service Pack to fix the bugs in 6.0. And how will CL get their money from people who wait to purchase? On to Lightwave: sure, it's hard. But so was Photoshop at first. Just stick with it, take it slow, follow all the tutorials and work up to your grand ideas. After all, you didn't make a masterpiece when you first used Poser, did you? As you practice and get good, then you can make the complex stuff.

ynsaen -- Thanks for your response. I am considering purchasing Lightwave, so I am seeking all of the feedback that I can get.
