THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Bryce-Bugs

Only a little evidence for all bryce beginners and others: Please safe ongoing your bryce-presets-folder! Unfortunately the program has some bugs. I'm working 15 month with this wonderful program, but i must install it new in this time, about 5x!!! Some imported models can/ will kill the program irreversible. (and the systhem too)...

I've never had this bug kill my systems, but it can make Bryce unstable. It is easily avoidable, if you regularly export (and then .ZIP up the files) your mat libraries! One thing, too, is that Bryce doesn't really delete objects form the libraries. They are still there, in terms of disk space used. The way around this bug is to hold down SHIFT or CTRL, and select all of the objects you WANT to keep, export them, replace the User file with a clean one, and then reimport your models... Sounds tedious, but it's not so bad! (not half as bad as keeping track of poser files!)

Backup and save constantly. I lost an entire hard drive one time, lost hundreds of hours of "work" in the form of all my Bryce scenes, resources, etc. Never again. I have one hard drive that is nothing but a mirror (back-up) for my main big hard drive. And, then all my finished Bryce projects are backed-up AGAIN on CD-R's. Now looking to invest in a DVD burner for backing up. AS

DVD burning is a good thing AS hehe, I back all my stuff up on that now for sure!

Do atleast one thing a day that scares the hell outta ya!!

Yep been there done that,I too lost all my stuff twice to Vicius attacks...Never again..DVD backup with a 120 gig backup with running an 80 gig main drive...As too the bug in Bryce what I think he is talking about is when you delete a model or multiple Models it seems to lock up the system,But in all reality it is just Bryce That is very slow Calculating that and If you have a slow computer well then you do get the Lockup...I then tried to open a User Library and it wouldnt load ever again but I did have the original library and I copied that over and everything was fine,I too have deleted multiple objects and hagve had the same experience especially when I had Way less memory then I have now(1gig)and it did take about 12 minutes for Bryce to work its way thru it...

Hah! Beat you, AS! My dad just brought us a DVD-burner from the states! :P Thanks for the heads-up, Wahnfried1959. I'll get things backed up as soon as I can.

Why a DVD burner and not just CD. Should I be burning to DVD? I back up with CD's and have it all on my new PC with no probs.

At present.... you can back up about 4 gigs to a DVD disk.... Eventually the capacity of burning to DVD is expected to be 27 gigs if my memory serves me correctly. Where as a CD will only hold 700 MB. So you can get a lot more on DVD. 8)

Aye, I was under the impression a DVD would top out at 17.4GB, but I could be wrong, that information is a year old or so. But I've never even considered a now-a-day burner, NOT being able to burn a video disc totally turned me off to the 4.7GB burners... They are down to about $100 here in Washington. It would be nice, for storage purposes, but with the price of 120GB SATA drives down so low it doesn't seem cost-effective...?

Basically, civilians like you and me can buy a Blank DVD-R and back up 4.7Gb worth of data. Or, you can buy a drive that will handle DVD-RAM disks, which are double-sided, and never come out of their little plastic "jewel box", you just slide the whole case in, like a big floppy disk, those hold 9-10Gb. Since 8X DVD-R burners are now out, you can get 4X DVD burners for around $100 USD. I've even seen 8X burners for $130 USD AS

DVD burners are great but there is nothing like a 160GB external firewire HD for instant data transfer access :-) Got mine for around $200 and it has served me great for my animation/film projects at school!

If I had to transport my data at all, it would be no choice, I would get an external HD. Have you seen the new external HD by Lacie? One Terabyte, lol. For only a mere $1,200. Actually, not a horrible price with it being SO big AND companies usually jack up the price when a hard drive "becomes" external.... AS

Lol.... a mere $1,200 (mere being the key word here) 1 Terabyte would be most excellent to have. I wish I had that kind of money to spend on a hard drive. Just have to save $$$ I guess. 8)

I got a new 120Gb HD for my birthday recently which was for storage. That sounds so simple but I think I need another disk for storage 'cos what I had amassed was 70Gb of stuff, mainly models and images but it's all stuff I couldn't live without, so now my new disk has hardly any space on it. BTW, I've found that having all my programs on one disk and all the saved stuff on the other makes all the programs run so much more smoothly, with less bugs showing their ugly heads. 8) Catlin

Aye, I remember my Pentium 2, I had a MONSTER 3GB drive and then nailed a HUGE 8GB drive for my files, it was amazing!
