Subject: Question regarding acceptable forum posts topics

Can you guys list examples of post would not be moved, EXECPT tech support. Just curious what other types of posts besides tech support are allowed. I don't want to know what isn't allowed, but rather what is. Is there a list you guys use? Also regarding links to other poser sites. Is there a list of all sites that cannot be linked to from within this forum? Forum has changed alot so I wanted to reaquaint with the rules. Is this post considered OT? Regards, Anton

Hmmm.... Interesting thought there. I'm curious as to the answer myself. Dave

millman ( ) posted Thu, 26 February 2004 at 8:18 AM

Hard to say, Anton. There have been many more postings moved than I'm used to seeing, and doesn't seem to be any pattern. Oh well, looks like the fate here is to have everything neatly pigeonholed and put in it's appointed place. (They who classify and pigeonhole should not complain when they, themselves, are classified and pigeonholed.)

Caly ( ) posted Thu, 26 February 2004 at 8:23 AM

Cute Poser pictures seemed to be allowed. Though I guess those could be moved to the galleries.

Tintifax ( ) posted Thu, 26 February 2004 at 8:38 AM

I'm curious too. Even if I ask for a technical help, I'm not allowed to say that it's for an upcoming product. This just moves the topic to the ShowCase forum. You can imagine, how much help you normally get there :-(. I would say, try your topic and when it's moved just add it to your personal list ;-) - Walter

Caly ( ) posted Thu, 26 February 2004 at 8:57 AM

Oh, announcements from Curious Labs are allowed for sure. Discussions of Poser patches are usually allowed.

Hmm... It does seem alot is moved. Maybe they want us to start looking at all of the forums each day instead of just Poser. I really don't go to copyright section unless I have a question in that regard and I want to see what has been said before. I rarely go to product showcase, just like I rarely look though catalogues. I do read newspapers and look at the ads that are found in the sidebars, just like I look at whats being developed if it happens to be included here. I guess people are still allowed to tell of new freebies still, hopefully that won't change. But gossip I guess is out along with speculation. If no one is fighting I don't see the need to keep this forum so dry. Just my .02

kbennett ( ) posted Thu, 26 February 2004 at 12:31 PM

Hi Anton,

Spike posted a message a while back (here) about just this topic. The salient points were:

Example of things that will be allowed in the Poser forum and Poser gallery

  • Asking for help with any version of Poser
  • Showing off what you made using Poser
  • Asking for and giving advice about Poser
  • Bottom line, anything to do with Poser

Example of things that will not be allowed in the Poser forum and Poser gallery

  • Fighting
  • Bickering
  • Attacks
  • Arguing
  • Posting adverts
  • Copyright issues (We have a forum for that)
  • Anything that is not Poser related

Hope this helps,

Kev.

dirk5027 ( ) posted Thu, 26 February 2004 at 12:36 PM

yep somebody above said "yawn fest", you got that right, they should beg for fights, debates and arguments, put some life back to this place and don't post anything, when you come back you won't be able to find it. :)

Dave ( ) posted Thu, 26 February 2004 at 12:46 PM

Yawn fest is right... Dave

xoconostle ( ) posted Thu, 26 February 2004 at 1:53 PM

Well, when Spike originally posted those bullet points, a very passionate and long-winded mass rebuttal ensued! It was no yawner, fer sure. I don't know, I still find lot of value here. Every time I ask for help with something, numerous people pitch in to help. Anton and others have posted some very useful Poser and Photoshop tips here in recent months. Hauksdottir started a thread intended to guide newbies, that was cool. I do feel that some of the thread moves have been overreaching and needless, same goes for some of the thread locks that were totally unecessary, but there's not much we regular members can do about that. I have the impression that a lot of people have cut way back on their participation here out of frustration with the sense of over-policing. The way I see it the forums ebb and flow. There are weeks at a stretch that are pretty boring, then there are weeks when several threads of interest are posted. Anyway, don't give up, y'all. It's only interesting here if we make it so.

Dave ( ) posted Thu, 26 February 2004 at 1:59 PM

Do I detect a southern accent there? ;) Dave

Mason ( ) posted Thu, 26 February 2004 at 2:05 PM

Well it is a technical forum about a piece of software after all. If you want to debate politics, gay rights, artistic asthetics, religious free speech, whether the women in the gallery are too juggy etc there are so many yahoo clubs, boards etc which will accomodate this. Seriously, if you're coming to Renderosity for some sort of intellectual fulfillment and verbal "excitement" then you might want to exam your life and its lack of social interaction. Might as well go to the NVidia site and look for "excitement" there.

PheonixRising ( ) posted Thu, 26 February 2004 at 2:09 PM

I must admit the forum isn't as fun as it used to be but since I don't pay the bills here I just spend the time on other things instead. :) Thanks for the info on topics and such. Once more question. I never got an answer about the policies and rules regarding linking to other sites in threads.

hehe Mason. Not all of us need tech support but still would like a forum to interact in for personal enjoyment. I don't think that implies a disfuctional social life that needs examination. But then again, maybe it does. :)

Anton, There hasn't been any problems with linking to other sites in threads as long as the link doesn't go to an age restricted site...but linking to age restricted sites in the market place seems to be OK as there are many products that have links to age restricted site.

There's always the O.T. forum for you guys to interact socially, if you're reached the point where you think you don't need help anymore. Plenty of excitement and good times for all, if the Poser forum is too boring for you now. Plenty of attention for those who like to share their feelings with others.

kbennett ( ) posted Thu, 26 February 2004 at 5:04 PM

Linking to other sites is fine, so long as the links don't go directly to the e-commerce sections of sites with such facilities. e.g. a link to a product description page at DAZ would not be okay but a link to the front page of DAZ would be fine.

Wow, some really condescending attitudes in this thread. How boring, one yawns in your general direction. :-) Anton is right, although we SHOULD be primarily focussed on all things Poser here, the general sense of community is what used to make it more fun. Kill the spirit of community, and you might as well just shut the whole place down and post a FAQ instead. As an example, I noticed that earlier today a forum mod moved a post soliciting Poser enthuiasts for a baseball team to the Siberia of the OT Forum, on the reasoning that it was about forum members, not Poser. In my opinion that sort of thing just kills the spirit of this place. To be fair, I can see how that thread was technically not 100% on topic, and I know the mod was only doing their job under the current strict and unevenly applied policy, so I hope he or she won't feel insulted by my comment. On the other hand, what harm is done by trying to get a Poser-associated baseball group together? I have a lot of appreciation for the people, for example the ones I formerly named, who still make an effort to contribute on-topic, but also let their personalities, opinions, and sense of humanity shine, and no, this is not about wishy-washy "feelings." :-) Artists are not robots. I enjoy the Off Topic Forum, but I totally understand why many find it intimidating or disgusting. "Do I detect a southern accent there? ;)" Did you mean me when I said "fer sure?" Nah, I was thinking locally. California surfer dude. :-) I've learned not to assume a Southern tone because even if I do so with affection, some Southerners think that they're being made fun of, so it's better to just not do that. I'll say "y'all" now and then, but I picked that up from a stay in Austin. Oops, um, a stay in Austin to do research for Poser. Yeah, that.

"To be fair, I can see how that thread was technically not 100% on topic" What gets me is they will move stuff they think should be moved but when a cord, mod, or admin posts something in the poser forum that has nothing to do with poser or not 100% poser related, it never gets moved.

SndCastie ( ) posted Thu, 26 February 2004 at 9:15 PM

So, an admin posting "Hey everyone, I'm back" in the poser forum is OK? I've just done several searches and there are many posts that aren't poser related still sitting in the Poser forum....not just by admins, cords, or mods, but by many people. That's what I can't understand, why some posts get moved and others don't. Now, it can't be that some were "missed", there are too many people looking at these things all day so someone has to see them....I've been a cord and I saw many that were moved for reasons that didn't make sense.

SndCastie ( ) posted Thu, 26 February 2004 at 9:52 PM

If you are refering to kb he has the right to post it here as he is a Mod here in this forum and was out for awhile. He was just letting everyone here know he was back. Aa a coordinator you of all people should know how much we all have to do and sometimes things are missed or overlooked we are working on trying to get things in order but sometimes it takes time. If you have questions about posts then feel free to IM me with a link to them and I will check them out. :O)

{Showing off what you made using Poser} Unless it's a prod*ct, then the thread is moved to the Showcase forum... I dare not use the p-word for fear that this entire thread may be moved. You may not talk about your own products in developement, but CL is free to talk about the next features in Poser 6 and DAZ is free to talk about DAZ|Studio (both of whom are "merchants" that sell their product here). (Uh-oh, did I just use the p-word and m-word? Dang, this thread will be moved for sure.) Off-color postings are usually moved also, even if they relate to Poser. This forum may be read by families, so anything that could be considered "adult" is moved. Postings about copyrights and stealing Poser artwork are moved, even though they relate to Poser and Poser artists would benefit from the message thread. Postings about movies take a while to move, so chances are good that your review of Lost in Translation will be seen in the Poser Forum for a while. You can sneak in a discussion about the Oscars by using a generic subject line like "Something cool on TV". Or this entire thread may be moved because we're not talking about Poser, the program. Look for this thread in the Community Center Forum.

PheonixRising ( ) posted Fri, 27 February 2004 at 2:28 PM

Daz isn't free to talk about their stuff either. They are subject to same rules. Daz never really posted products ever. When I worked there I had posts moved to Product showcase if I talked about stuff I made. I was told CL is exempt cuz they wrote the software. It is frustarting that only freebies are allowed. Someone actually told me once that I should feel fperfectly free to answer questions. lol

I don't see why an exception shouldn't be made for Curious Labs. They certainly don't abuse the privelage. Their announcements here are concise and infrequent. The only ones in the recent past that might have seemed like advertising were the announcements regarding the buyout by the Shade company, but that's big news regarding the survival and future of the app, it didn't seem out of line to me. Although I don't get upset about it I have noticed that some merchants post work-in-progress images and blurbs here without specifying whether or not the product will be commercial, or claiming "I haven't decided." Unsurprisingly, when it's released, it's commercial. There hasn't been as much of that lately.

PheonixRising ( ) posted Fri, 27 February 2004 at 6:18 PM

What consistutes an age restricted site? Alot of the content here at Rendo is what some would say should be age restricted. So just the age varification thing?

Anton, What bothers me about that whole "age restricted site" thing is Rosity is also age restricted. Have you check at the bottom of your profile page?

xoconostle ( ) posted Fri, 27 February 2004 at 6:36 PM

cherokee69 is technically correct of course, but my understanding is that what they mean is "adult," which in the USA means "18 or older." It does seem a bit odd when the galleries here at Rendo are Breast City Central. What would be helpful in defining this would be for them to specify exactly what age level they're referring to. The recent controversy over deleted links to Gay Poser Art was really ugly, because people were confused about whether Renderosity was being homophobic (I really doubt that but don't know) or if it was because GPA was an 18-and-over site. As has been said repeatedly by others, the matter is further complicated by the presence of morphing genital props and bondage gear in the RMP.

cherokee69 ( ) posted Fri, 27 February 2004 at 7:05 PM

"the matter is further complicated by the presence of morphing genital props and bondage gear in the RMP" xoconostle, Your right on that and those morphing genital props seem to be allowed to have links to age restricted sites...I brought this to the admins attention. I was told that maybe they just "slipped" by and was missed. One of the products did have one link corrected while other links in that same product were left as they were and was told they would get to them. I think that was a month ago. I just can't understand why, if they want to be so strict on the TOS, why it isn't across the board and not selective. If it isn't being selective, people watching these things sure are missing alot.
