Hi.. I'm trying to figure out how to fix this.. I imagined/dreamt about it.. but I think it needs fixing (lightning). I'm quite happy with the model and all, but something is not working for me.. any help (with a nice slow explanation so I can follow) would be greatly appreciated....

Thanks
Rick

P.S. Sorry for the image size if it gets too big.. tried to change it.. but it somehow got stuck on the cache...

P.S. In the end the image is the right size... Rick

Ground or a floor of some type. And some idea of where the light might be coming from. Is he in an arena ready to fight, in a prison? Nice job so far. Marque

Well.. the floor is there... but for all I have tried.. he still looks like he's kind of floating a little.. maybe I'll add some texture to it.. the environment it's supposed to be black... (So I can have it on my desktop) but if it helps, it's supposed to be like in a dressing room of an arena or the sort... forgot the right name if it's not that... Thanks.

well, i think the floor is the big problem here.. once you fix that, it'll look much better. perhas darken it a little. if you like postwork, you can do it in Photoshop or whatever program you can use for that. and add more shadow near his feet - the shadow is darkest near the actual figure.

Hmmm ... it does appear as though he's floating a bit, and it may be because he is not actually touching the floor. But another part of the problem could be the shadow setting ... it appears a tad too softened and not as stark as it should be given that light. Another thing that you might want to consider is doing some postwork, to highlight the outer edges of the character more. To do this, render the image to a TIF file, so that it has an alpha channel. Then take it into Photoshop (or another image editing program that has layers). You should be able to select ONLY the figure's alpha channel, given that he is the only object in the scene. Copy the figure to a second layer, and then use a Dodge (or Lighten) brush to make the "backlighting" more drastic. For a good example of what I mean here, check out "Through The Rain..." in ToxicAngel's gallery. The bright glow on the left side of her body was probably done with this technique, and it adds a lot of drama to the pic.

Well.. altough I did not find the image Deecey told me.. I think I got something like what he said... and I added a floor (wich would like to get comments on), fixed the light so he does not appear to be floating (he was not, but the reflection made it look like it) and added some glow... and rendered it bigger... How does it look so far?

Thanks for the advice and keep it coming..
Rick

Rick ... When I looked at the image in your gallery, the song "Eye of the Tiger" from the movie Rocky came to mind. There may have been a very subtle reason for that, which I am sure was unintentional .... look what I visualize through the shadows on his back. 8-)

Macsen ( ) posted Sun, 29 February 2004 at 12:32 PM

well.. it was unintentional... even tough I love cats (have 3) neve tough about "hiding" something in the picture... Maybe that's why the "Eye of the Tiger" was related to boxing (I THINK.. I do not remember why the song became famous.. but I think ROCKY).. anyhow.. interesting point.. :) Well.. no I do not have anything to do (wanted to complain since I finished), so suggestions for the next one will be greatly appreciated... Thanks again Rick

I like it. That rim lighting was definately the trick....I'll try to remember this thread to point to as example next time someone asks about that lighting technique. Good image there -- strong and basic. My only quibble is the parquet floor; seems a little twee for the rest of the pic. All that muscle and stark lighting, he should be standing on cracked concrete or rusty steel or something. My twenty yen, anyhow.

Macsen ( ) posted Mon, 01 March 2004 at 9:22 AM

Well.. the wooden floor was cause I wanted a WoodenFloor since the white one (that was how I dreamt the image) did not work at all in the end... Concrete... Steel... good ideas... I'll try in and do more posting on that... since if I'm going to wait to dream another image.. it's going to take a loong time... My last one was posted so long ago that I did not appeared in the gallery anymore (I presume maintenance or stuff like that). But glad lot's of people liked it..
