Subject: Motion Animation Tutorials

Can anyone direct me to any step by step tutorials on how to animate Posette and Daz figures? I know there are bvh and pre made motions, but I would like to custom make my own! Can these be made in Poser or do I require other applications? I find that I cannot get smooth motions like someone falling or running and jumping! There are some tutorials I have come across which seem to deal with props or very basic motions such as standing to sitting, but these are not long and detailed enough for what I want.Any assistance would be appreciated. arrow1

Search for Geep's Poser animation tutorials here in this forum. Search especially for anything pertaining to the "Graph Editor." You can create smooth motion using the Graph Editor within Poser - it is the key. You can then save those animations as animations (within your pose sets) or export them as home-made bvh files. In the meantime, you can freely download a bunch of free BVH files on the net (Little Dragon please help me here - I don't remember the URLS!). Wolf359 also has some for sale. I've never used them but I don't hesitate to recommend them based on what I've seen of his work.

Before they made me they broke the mold!

One trick is to find some .avi files of movements (if you are on PC, other .mov). Set them as your background. It is easier to copy the movements if you can see them and compare yours. Read Dr Geeps tutorial. Take existing .bvh files and modify them. Here is Little Dragons list of BVH sites. These should keep you busy for a while. Bear in mind that most of these aren't optimized for Poser or the proportions of existing Poser figures, so your mileage may vary .... http://web.engr.oregonstate.edu/~zier/Assignment4BVH/ http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~pingelm/ComputerAnimation/Motions/bvh/ http://www.help3d.com/ http://www.ict.usc.edu/graphics/animWeb/humanoid/sampleData.html http://userdata.acd.net/cady.patrick/BVHfiles.html http://acabar.cafwap.net/~zier/anim/ ME Productions MediaPhiles http://www.faint-light.com/faint-light/motionview/ht/bvh_3d1.html http://www.faint-light.com/faint-light/motionview/ht/bvh_3d2.html http://www.faint-light.com/faint-light/motionview/ht/bvh_b.html Motek http://www.accad.ohio-state.edu/mocap/mocap_data.htm http://www.mantismotion.com/samples.html http://www.mastudios.com/motion.html http://www.audiomotion.com/downloads/downloads.htm When you have some cash to spend, you'll find Poser-ready motion packs for sale at DAZ, the Renderosity Marketplace, Credo Interactive, and The Forge Studios. Thanks for that list Numanoid - I have wanted to try the bvh thingy. I got some free bvh files on a cover disk a few months ago but the disk was corrupt.

numanoid ( ) posted Wed, 03 March 2004 at 2:59 AM

If the BVH file doesn't work, try it on a different figure, or with a different axis. I have managed to "fix" and resave about 100 BVH motion files that I have found. If anyone feels very energetic, I am looking for a decent BVH file of marching, Second World War German, Russian, Anerican, British and Japanese. My attempts have looked BAAAAD so far, and I don't have the strength left to keep trying.

I would suggest that you study Animation in general, not just in Poser. There is a wealth of knowledge out there. Especially go learn the basic principles of animation. If you want to be a good animator you can't simply learn a program, you have to learn animation, and then you can animate well using any tool (even a pencil and paper!).

But will a movie studio hire you if all you now is how to animate a pencil and paper. Surely they want spaceships and rabbits and stuff as well. Lol.
