Subject: rendering on a network?

todd71 ( ) posted Wed, 03 March 2004 at 3:06 PM · edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 6:46 PM

ive finally gotten around to networking my computers at home..is there any ways for Carrara 3 to take advantage of network rendering?

thomllama ( ) posted Wed, 03 March 2004 at 5:11 PM

Nope.. it's the only thing in a review from MacAddict that they wished it had.. I'd think it should be fairly easy for them to do in the next version... If they can make it do Multi Processors.. why not Multi machines.. but I'm no programer so...

well drat...yeah i agree about it 'should be easy'...but then im not a programmer either...lol...

well though In theory... when doing Multi Processors.. the primarly gets sent the whole file and them dictates/subdivides what each one is to do... why not with multi computers?

Hmm maybe I should learn how to program before I say anything!! LOLOL

I would expect that network rendering is actually pretty tough to develop. The host computer has to keep track of all kinds of stuff: what if a remote computer disappears from the network? What if one of the computers runs out of disk space? That kind of thing. Not to mention dealing with a hybrid Mac/PC network. It's certainly a major, legitimate feature to hope for, but also probably a big job. On the other hand, didn't Infini-D have network rendering? You'd think they could cannibalize that code base.

i dont care about the particulars..i just want them to make it work on my computer..lol..dammit wheres that magic wand??!! i know theyve got a magic lamp there somewhere..lol.. i never used infini-d so i dont know..but what about the packages that do independent rendering? not that i actually know what im talking about, but i know some of the higher end packages let you do it...and theyve done it on linux...BSD also lets you chain computers to make farms...yeah i watch TechTv a lot...lol

My idea would be more along the lines of Carrara's rendering room being seperate from the core. Which would give you a few advantages. 1. You could work on a scene while the program is rendering. Something I really wish I could do. 2. Being seperate it should be allowed to be installed on multiple computers. Thus we could distribute the rendering of something over a network, not literally mind you, but at least we could use more then one computer to render. 3. You wouldn't have the entire Carrara app up and running in the background (all the rooms) and would just have the rendering engine which would improve (should) speed in rendering. Brian

Is anyone from Eovia listening??? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! Add this feature! RDS used to have it. Infini-d had it. Why not Carrara?!?! (please?)

I asked the same question before CS2 came out. I would like to see something like Bryce lightning for Carrara but I think the master PC running Carrara would be a bit taxed with all that it has to manage. A stand alone render engine, server? that could be put on another PC so that your master box isnt tied up for a week just to do a test rendering would be nice. :) There goes glought dreaming again A lot happening in the background in Carrara (check you CPU usage during a render job) but I think they will come up with something soon.

Net work rendering works great in Bryce on Mac OS X. It is certainly not as sophisticated a program as Carrara. So asking for network rendering should not be beyond the scope of the programmers.
