You want to be very careful not to fall into the trap of using a Caucasian and putting a brown tint on the skin. Out here we call that the "Barbi-hontis" syndrome; It's a white chick playing Indian. Also, hit the archives of the Smithsonian and the Library of Congress for facial structures as well as factual clothing. One of the things I hear from the Elders here, the few that acknowledge the Internet, is that the pictures are nice but "all that fantasy crap gots to go." Everyone has a bone to pick, a cross to bear, a political agenda these days. I think that respecting the Nations and working from the factual information readily available is the best bet. Good luck, and keep us posted on the project! I'd be thrilled if someone created a set of "real" Native Americans for Poser.
SndCastie -- thanks for the link! Much appreciated! :) Cedarwolf -- Oh, exactly. It is far from my intentions to ever want offend anyone. This is why I am asking for web links with pictures, so I can get an "accurate" view of Native American features. Plus, my friend has given me destinct descriptions of what she would like the characters to look like. Our RPG is sort've supposed to mimic real life w/ the characters as much as possible, so it's far from "fantasy" based. Thanks for your good luck wishes for my project! I will keep you all posted and thanks for your interest! I agree there should be more Native American characters in the Marketplace. :) God Bless and have a great day! Thanks again! ~RnRWoman~
Im with cedar. I made my V3 native character based off my aunt. And truth be told, it was done primarily -because- of the 'barbi-hontis'issues. I've just completed a version for M3 as well.. textures need to be done, but the morph is ready to roll. Let me know how it goes, I'd love to see more realistic natives offered. I have a well known love of ethnic characters in general :P
I have a Tv documentary project that I have been working on with a group of Native artists called the Tecumseh collective. the head artist is a direct descendant of the great leader Tecumseh. I have a web site with stiils from a shoot. I own all of the photos so if you need any bits and pieces let me know and I will get you copyright for them. the words "Art, Gallery etc. are links. cheerio lululee http://www.cyber-sounds.tv/tecumseh/main.html
Thanks for your interest and reply, Stacey! This is why I am asking for web links to pictures, so I can have an "accurate" view of Native American features. I agree too, that ethnic groups shouldn't be classified as just one "type" of look. It should be accurate. It's kewl to hear about your products! I always enjoy your morphs! And I am still very thankful for the Bono body settings you have done for me. God Bless! Have a great day! ~RnRWoman~
awesome site Lululee! Im groovin those photos :) RnR- No worries sweets. Feel free to give me a holler if either of you need any help. ooh.. and I wanna see WIP's! :P (ps- bono was a blast and you've done some OUTSTANDING work with him lately.. I adored the Humanitarian piece you did..truly awesome stuff!)
Thanks again, Lululee! Thanks, Stacey for your encouragement and help! I'll let you know if I stumble into any problems. And thanks for your interest! I'll keep ya updated. :D Hopefully ZBrush can help me out! Also thanks for your comments on my recent Bono renders! I think my Humanitarian render is my fave render of Bono so far, altho it took 3-4 days to paint! :o Have a great day! God Bless! :D ~RnRWoman~
Are you trying to go generic here? Native Americans look different depending on tribe just like any other race. I would think that each link you go to will give you another facial structure to work with that may differ significantly from the last. It would probably be easier if you research just one tribe.
Barbarellany -- Actually I'm not trying for generic. The two characters in the RPG are both Cherokee. Thanks for the ideas! movida -- Wow. Thanks for sharing your work. Thanks also for your offer in sending the morph settings. The characters in the RPG are two women characters, but there is a Native American man in the background. :) So if anyone can donate Cherokee picture links as well I'd appreciate it too! :) Thanks! God Bless and have a great day! ~RnRWoman~
Movida, that's an incredible image. Check the skin tones and see if he should be a tad darker. We've got a friend here who's name translates out to "the color of mud" because that's the color his skin turns during the summer when he's outdoors working all the time. But, then again, the mud here is iron rich and tends to have a dark, reddish-brown tone. Love the work on the cheekbones, brow ridge, and nose. RnRWoman, here's a link that may help you with your research: http://www.cherokee.org/ This is the official site for the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, AKA the Western Band of the Cherokee. You will notice that the skin tones are lighter than those of the Eastern Band due to interbreeding with caucasians and a lack of outdoor time. Here's the link for the Eastern Band: http://www.cherokee-nc.com/ You may have to dig quite a bit for decent photographs of the Elders and fullbloods. Acculturation and assimilation has taken its toll on the facial structure and skin tones, but if you think of the skin tones of the Andean Indians, the central American natives, you will be really close. Good work, everyone...now if these beauties were only available for M2! I haven't found the need to spend the price of a used car to purchase M3...yet.
cedar: Thank you for the input, much appreciated. He renders darker with complex global lights - I put a WIP up in the wip gallery. I'll play with Mikey 2 and see what happens. I think Mike2 head .obj's are distributable??? Somebody yell at me if I'm wrong. If you feel like blowing a wad get ZBrush...you won't believe what you can do in it morph-wise.
As one of those middle aged people who had to go back to college I don't have a lot of "disposable income" (what the heck is that supposed to mean, anyway?). Just turned in my Masters Thesis two days ago and that little project is eating up all my spare change. I'll be looking forward to seeing what you folks come up with. I'm incredibly impressed with what I've seen so far!
Here's a couple more URL's to keep an eye on for information and pictues: The Cherokee Heritage Center http://cherokeeheritage.org/ (I was the manager of the bookstore and the Adams Corner Restoration Village there for 8 years) Here's some pictures from Adams Corner which show how life was in Indian Territory at the turn of the century: http://www.futurestradingideas.com/Cherokee/MoreAdamsCorner.html

Hi, It's me again. ;) I'm working on two Native American chars a friend and I have in our RPG. Is there any sites anyone knows of with pix of Native American people that I could use as reference? Each time I try to attempt this myself, it ends up looking the same. Thanks in advance! ~RnRWoman~
