Poser is a 3D type of software. You can download a demo version of Poser 4 Pro Pack, that's really the best way of explaining what it is: To try it out :o) You can get it at Curious Labs

You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA
Using Poser since 2002. Currently at Version 11.1 - Win 10.

In a nutshell, Poser 5 is an entry level 3d character rendering and animation program. It's not a 3d modeling application in the general definition of the term though.

Poser allows artists to incorporate 3d characters into 2d/3d digital work using an extensive library of relatively inexpensive third party 3d figures and accessories without the need to learn how to model, texture and rig (i.e. prepare for animation) 3d meshes themselves.

Along with the Curious Labs website, you might want to check out Daz3D to see some of what's available for Poser in terms of third party content.

Along with Renderosity, there are several online communities dedicated to providing third party content (free and retail) as well.

You may also want to download the manual for Poser5. It's got a very good intro on what 3D on puters means. Poser is mainly used for organic forms, mostly human. You can use morphs to change the body appearance, you can give it a pose, you can texturize it, create a light setup you prefer etc etc. It ranges from as good as photorealistic over cartoon to sci-fi and fantasy. Probablt the best known character in the Poserworld is "Vicky", a mesh created by Daz3D. But Poser itself already comes with many characters, most of which are more cartoonish than realistic, except for Poser5. But Poser5 offers more options and you definately need a fast puter with lots of ram to use it comfortably.

I have tried prudent planning long enough. From now I'll be mad. (Rumi)

Consider this a warning. Poser is VERY addictive and expensive. It's worse than smoking and junk food. I know. I smoke half as much and now eat at home to save my money for all the toys you can buy. The software itself is pretty inexpensive compared to the high end 3D sortware. All versions of Poser have their own advantages and problems. Sometimes it can be very frustrating, or very rewarding. Either way, you'll always want to do more, try more, and buy more. Pretty soon you'll hear of Vicky and Mike, and that's the nail in the coffin. Check out hte Poser gallery here to see what you can do with the software. A lot of it is poor or just fair. A lot is superb and amazing. ...sigh... Good luck. We'll look forward to seeing you here.
