roadrunner69 ( ) posted Mon, 15 March 2004 at 10:00 PM · edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 1:14 PM

ALL .... hello .... I've been viewing 'renderosity' for about two weeks .... I would like to try BRYCE 5.0 .... what 'specs' do I need on my 'pc' for this program? .... how many 'gigabytes' on my hard drive? .... how much 'ram'? .... I have a pentium 4 processor now (1.6ghz) .... is that anywhere near enough? ....any other suggestions or 'info' is MUCH APPRECIATED .... finally, what is the 'best' way to 'start'??? .... THANKS, KINDLY .... roadrunner69.

Minimum requirements for Bryce 5: Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP Pentium processor 200 MHz or higher 64MB RAM for Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000 128MB RAM for Windows XP SVGA (800 X 600, 256 color) monitor CD-ROM Drive Mouse and/or Tablet You have a 1.6 GHz system. You should have plenty of everything required mate. Get to Brycin' and having some fun. Come here if you have questions. Lots of help to be had here as well as fun. Go to Amazon.com and get yourself a copy of Susan Kitchens Real World Bryce 4. It is the Bryce Bible and has a wealth of excellent information. The only thing it doesn't cover for Bryce 5 is metaballs and the tree lab. Post your WIP's(Work In Progress) here for help as you work on your images. Read through the threads..... even the old ones. There is lots of undocumented help within these threads. Hope that helps you out some. Welcome to the Bryce Forum. 8)

The more gigs on the hard drive the better. (You'll find yourself getting models, pictures, etc. and those will take up the "real estate".) Same with RAM, the more the better. (You could get by on 128MB even, but complex scenes will start hitting the virtual mem - which slows things down quite a bit.) Bryce should even run on an old 486 based processor. (Not that you'd want to, unless you like waiting a long time for a render. Imagine skeleton with cobwebs by 'puter.) Any new PC that you can currently buy is well up to the task of handling Bryce. A P4 1.6 GHz 'puter should have no problems with it. The only thing you might want serious processing power for is animations (not exactly Bryce's forte) so you could complete them in a reasonable amount of time. In such cases you're then considering setting up a renderfarm network using Bryce Lightning... I don't know too much about that, but I'm sure there's a few here that do. Best way to start? Well, you came here - which is good. Play with Bryce a bit, experiment, etc. Also the manual that comes with the program is a bit watered down, so finding a copy of Real World Bryce is a must.

SWADE & PAULJS75 .... THANK YOU BOTH for the input .... I have windows xp 'home' with a 32 gigabyte hard drive (21gb. 'free' space), 376 ddr ram .... 17"monitor set at 32 bit true color(factor default set at 16bit) .... will check out the places you mentioned .... once again, THANK YOU.... roadrunner69.

The more you have of everything the quicker Bryce will be. I've just upgraded my machine to a Athlon 3.0+ CPU and have two 120Gb hard drives, one to hold all the programs and the other to store all the models, texture images, and Br5 files. I've also got 1Gb ddr ram, I did have 1.5Gb ram but I've now set up another machine that is totally dedicated to rendering and it got the other 0.5, which is brill especially if it's one of those renders that's going to take days. My latest render is on it's third day. 8) Catlin

Oh! and did I say that Bryce is addictive? 8)

Take no notice of this lot! They're all on crack! All you need is an old b&W tv, 2 tin cans and a length of string..............That's all Catlin uses anyway! :-)

I use an Amstrad 1512 with a 40 meg hard drive. And it rocks. I just got a new modem and it's upgraded to 9600!! I can download pictures in like 15 minutes, it's so cool. And I just upgraded to Windows version 2. Gotta go, there's a new episode of Miami Vice on in a minute. I heard that Crocket gets a concussion and becomes a gangster... Regards from 1988

Cool Drawbridge! if you see some of my hair, could you bring it back with you? gets kinda breezy up top nowadays.
you can run Bryce even on a 266 with 128m of memory, but ya gotta be patient (in the benchmark picture, I came in 2nd place with about 28 minutes..as opposed to the gigahertz crowd at 2-6 minutes..;)

Runs just fine on a pII 350,256 mb ram, pci video card,(couger)12 gig WD hd, a bit slow but runs good as long as the scene isn't too complex.

"Reinstall Windows" is NOT a troubleshooting step.

I keep my thribbles nice and cosy inside my computer. I do believe they help Bryce run faster. 8)

drawbridgep ( ) posted Wed, 17 March 2004 at 6:28 AM

THEY don't like us to talk about Thribbles, so keep it quiet.... thribble: Thrib"ble, (1) n. A small animal about the size of a mouse used to boost CPU power during long renders. (2) n. A savoury doughnut encrusted with mushrooms and peanunts. (3) n. A East European country. (4) v. The act of moving drawing pins from one pot to another. (5) a. Triple And Catlin has stolen mine and I want them back!

Thanks for the thribbles definition all. drawbridgep must have the 50 pound dictionary. But that explains my slow render times. I'v been using a hamster on a wheel, wired to my cpu, shouda been using thribbles.
